PowerMac 8500 Cache Upgrade - Steps 10-12 Step 10 - Remove the Motherboard from the case: Carefully slide the motherboard straight toward the front of the case, not far - just enough to align the notches in the motherboard edges with the tabs on the case (as shown in the photo to the right. Once aligned - lift the one tab shown, and lift the motherboard sideways out the side of the case.

Warning! There are small capacitors on the back side of the 8500 motherboard that are easily broken off if you are not careful. Don't allow anything to "brush" against the board, or exert pressure on these components during cache removal/replacement. If you don't have a padded anti-static mat, I suggest that you hold the motherboard by the edges in your lap, and when reinserting the cache use one hand on the back side (carefully placed) to provide support.
Step 11 - Cache Module Replacement: With the motherboard removed, locate the cache on the board. It is in a socket near the center of the ram dimm slots. The cache socket is off-center relative to the dimm memory sockets, and narrower also. See the photo to the left.
The cache is a tight fit usually, so carefully but firmly pull it straight up out of the socket. Place the old cache in a anti-static bag.

Before inserting the new cache, be sure to observe the proper alignment of the cache in the socket. One of the two notches in the cache is closer to the edge. Match this orientation with the corresponding ridges in the cache socket before inserting and seating the cache. Make sure the cache is fully seated in the socket.
Step 12 - Re-Assembly: Re-assembly is just the reverse of the previous steps. Some important things to remember during this phase:
- Take care installing the motherboard. Align the notches in the board with the case tabs and press straight in. The one tab we lifted will snap over the board, or you can lift it yourself. Once in - push the board gently back fully in the case, making sure the connectors align in the rear of the case.
- Remember the orientation of the power switch. Slide the power LED into the switch first, then locate the thin long pin on the lower left side and push the switch straight in. It needs to fully "snap" in place and wedge against the motherboard.
- Connect the motherboard ribbon cable before inserting the processor card. Its easier to do with the card removed. Flex the cable down to ensure that the processor card does not contact it and to give you a better view when inserting the card.
- Make sure the processor card aligned in the card guides before trying to mate it to the connector. Watch carefully to ensure the processor card connector is mating squarely with the motherboard connector. Ensure the processor card is fully seated (no gold connector pin material is visible on the processor card when it is fully seated in the connector).
- Don't replace the cover yet until you see that the system boots normally. Don't leave the cover off for long periods of time, as it plays a part in the proper airflow and cooling of the system.
