Overclocking Tests on G3 CPUs: |
||||||||||||||||||||
|
A reader sends notes on the results of overclocking tests on a series of Apple G3/ZIF CPUs:
anyway, the ibm and motorola chips have mostly the same numbers on them
from 233 or 266 machines, the 300 is obviously different. the ibms are
MUCH faster and cooler (10-20c). i have been able to get most chips to
280mhz, but many of the motorolas get very hot, probably wont run
without a fan., most ibms with dates in 98 can run at 292 and some at
315, got one to run at 332, these are all from 233 and 266 machines.
the 300 runs great at 350, did a partial boot at 368, at 350 it is fast,
and stable. macbench disk scores (writes and reads)went up 15%-70% from
the same setup but at 315 with 512l2cache. didnt think the 350 would be
that much faster.
i can get a small number of the new genuine apple 300 1 meg lc cpus for
$450 with your 233 trade in. they all have run at 350, and 36c with fan
and compound. can run all the time in a desktop.
mostly need to remove the stock ram, it cant crank the speeds we needs,
pc sdram works fine.10ns
macbench:
ps. this smokes my 9600 400. [Note: In real Apps tests my 9600/400
was as fast or faster than a Apple G3/333/222. See my Mach 5 Page for
results-Mike]
