NOTE: Overclocking in any form will void your Apple warranty, is risky and can affect reliability. Information here is for reference only and not a endorsement of overclocking. You assume all risks and understand that failures can happen from overclocking.

Jumpers: |
The latest info from the Rate Your CPU Upgrade database is that Radio Shack jumpers # 276-1512 work. (Previous reports went back and forth on numbers like 276-1612a - but if in doubt - take the jumper block to Radio Shack and show them the size.) Also see below for Output Enablers that used to make preconfigured jumper block caps for specific speeds. This info is for those that buy OEM jumperless ZIFs that require changing the motherboard jumper settings - most "name brand" ZIFs don't require changing the motherboard jumper block settings which void the warranty and if you incorrectly set the jumpers the system will not run. (Always take note of pin 1 orientation and write down your stock settings to make sure you can get back to those settings later if need be. |

Cooling Fans: |
A reader reported in my Rate Your CPU Upgrade database that a Radio Shack 486 fan part number 273-246 fits the beige G3: The spring clip on the case that presses on the stock heatsink usually has to be removed and remember height of the new heatsink/fan can be a problem if it's too tall. Output Enablers also sells a Beige G3 CPU cooler called the Chiller made just for Beige G3s, but it may also require removing the spring clip.

Backside Cache Speed Adjustment | PowerLogix's G3/G4 Cache Profiler allows easy potential increases in backside cache speed via a software control panel. Be aware that many machines may not have fast enough cache to allow increases in speed and real world apps show little gain in most cases (although MacBench 5 CPU scores go up, real apps show very little to no gain usually). (G3/G4 cache profiler replaces previous versions of their cache control utility.) Download the latest version at: www.powerlogix.com.Here's their list of suggested speeds:
Increases in backside cache speed help, but do not result in large real world increases in performance according to my tests. |
CPU/Bus Speed Bumps: |
New!: I've just posted a page on Yosemite B&W G3 Speed Settings Explained. Beige (original) G3 settings are on the Beige G3 jumper settings page posted last year. Warning: Voids your Apple warranty!
A reader/dealer sent in a Overclocking Study of IBM and Motorola CPUs of various speeds. To see the Overclocking results from Beige and B&W G3 owners - go to the G3 Owner's Ratings page and select either Apple B&W G3 or Apple Beige G3, then select 'Apple' as the upgrade manufacturer. Enter Your Results at my Survey Page - make sure you list Apple as the mfr and select the correct Mac G3 model (Beige or BW G3) |

Jumper Blocks: |
Chris Wood sent a note that Output Enablers has pre-programmed jumper block replacements for G3 Macs configured for different CPU speeds. Lifting the tape will void the warranty of course. Jumper Info:
I used Seagate (spares I had) Hard Drive jumpers but readers say Radio Shack part number #276-1512a also fit [Update: some readers said these were too large - try #276-1612a but there seems to be a lot of reports of bad radio shack part numbers]. |

User Feedback: |
Search my G3 Owner's Reports database for results of overclocking Apple G3s - select either Beige, BW or iMac and then Apple as the upgrade brand to see what speeds and comments other owners had on overclocking. |

My new G4 forum and 3dfx forums will be expanded in the future to restore the complete array of forums I once ran (server issues forced a paring of them for now)
