IDE Slave Drive Upgrade for the B&W G3

Intro | Removing the Tray | Mtg the Drive | Reinstall the Tray | Prep. the Drive Step 2: Mounting the New Drive on the Tray With the tray removed the next step is to configure the new drive as an IDE Slave and mount it on the tray adjacent to the existing drive. Note that in the middle position the drive must not exceed 1.5 inches in height to clear the motherboard Power Supply Connector when the case is closed. The middle position must be used for IDE drives due to cable length limits (spacing of the primary and slave IDE connectors). Possibly moving the existing IDE drive to the middle position and then using either the front or back tray position for a taller drive might work as well (I'll investing this further).
IDE Jumper Settings:
IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) drives have a very simple drive jumpering scheme. Normally there are 3 possible settings - Master, Slave, or cable select. The Maxtor drive shipped with the Master jumper enabled, I removed it as in my Yosemite it would be a slave to the original 6GB drive. (Note - some older IDE drives have a "Master with slave present" setting that may need to be jumpered if you add a slave drive. This was not the case with the Maxtor or Quantum OEM drive.) The image below shows a picture of the Maxtor drive jumpers.

Mounting the New Drive to the Tray:
Now we need to mount the slave drive adjacent to the existing drive. This is done by aligning the drive's bottom tapped screw holes with the 4 holes on the center area of the drive tray. Secure the drive with the 4 screws that came with the drive kit.

The next step deals with reinstalling the drive mounting tray back in the system.
