Step 3: Reinstalling the Drive Tray

After mounting the drive to the tray (previous page), the next step is to reinstall the tray into the chassis. First make sure the power supply connectors (motherboard and drives are clear and then carefully position the drive tray at the rearmost position of the case and lower it down, then slide it forward. There are guide tabs on the front of the tray that mate with slots in the chassis, and a guide pin at the rear of the chassis that helps ensure the tray is positioned correctly.

Once the tray is in place, reinstall the retainer plate and secure it with the screw removed previously. Now connect the hard drive power supply connectors (there is a spare connector for a 2nd drive on the existing boot disk power cable) and attach the 2 drive IDE cable to the motherboard and the two drives. Carefully route the IDE cable so that it doesn't get pinched or bind when the case is closed. I recommend using adhesive backed cable clamps, double sided foam or adhesive backed velcro to secure the IDE cables to the top of the drives. I used some adhesive backed V-clamps since I had them handy. The image below shows the final installed drive with cables connected.

Verify Cables Don't Bind:

As a final check before closing up the case, verify that the cables are not getting pinched or binding as the case is closed (see image below). Especially watch the area around the ATX Power Supply connector. Securing the IDE cable flat against the top of the drives helps keep it out of harms way.

Verify cables not pinched

The next step covers preparing the drive for use (Format/OS Install) and has summary comments.
