Apple Internal Modem Issues & Modem Script Tests
Reader Reports and Test Results
Updated: 8/23/99 (Fix Force56K Link)Introduction: Many readers have sent mails noting disconnect problems with the Apple internal modem in the Blue and White G3. As most readers/G3 owners know, Apple's internal modems (iMac, PB G3, Biege G3) have had a rocky history according to many reports (and my experience), with disconnects being one common issue. I had hoped that the B&W modem would be a different design or use different firmware to address the problems but based on reader reports problems are common. So far in very limited use I personally have seen only low connect rates (compared to X2/3COM/USR modems), but I've only used my B&W G3 several times so far.

Modem Script Tests:
A reader replies to the modem script tip (Update: see http://www.macntosh.com/macara405.html ) mentioned in the 3/22/99 main site news (see below for the original post):
" Mike,
Just thought I'd pass along my experiences with the Blue G3 internal modem... I downloaded the scripts from the link you provided in today's news. I've been having lots of disconnects using the 56K Apple script, and I've been using the V.34 script instead. Here is what happened when I tried the new scripts...56K High Speed script... this script was mentioned on the Apple Tech Board... this script would not work with the modem... It said there was some error with the modem
56K Rapid Connect script... this script worked and was faster than the V.34 Apple script... However, the connect speed was not listed in Remote Access
56K Custom Init... this script worked the best... The connect speed was listed as 57,600... As you mentioned, this can't be the actual connection speed...
However, to get a better gauge, I tried a modem speed test from a web page I found - http://homepage.tinet.ie/~leslie/testpage.htm
[I've noted this page before and as I said then, net traffic conditions change so frequently that consistent repeatability from test to test is almost impossible in many cases. Best tests are downloading, etc. from your ISP - where you have the shortest path/fewest connections possible-Mike]Here are the rough test results... there are five modem speed tests on the page... I used the third one on the list entitled 'Throughput'...
V.34 Apple script... scored around 19,200!
56K Rapid Connect script... scored around 33,600
56K Custom Init script... scored around 43,000
The actual scores are displayed in a different measurement, but are shown on a bar graph for comparison with typical download speeds of 14.4, 28.8, 33.6, 56, etc... I don't know how accurate the test is, but it seems consistent. According to the page, the tests do not use the browser's disk cache, so they are repeatable without skewing the results. I didn't bother testing the Apple 56K since is disconnects so much, but when I did use the script, I recall it being pretty fast. Based on what I've read on the Net, some people (like you) are doing find with the Blue internal modem, but others are not. I have a feeling the chipset Apple uses is very sensitive to phone line quality.

Timbuktu 4.8./B&W G3 Modem Problem: A reader reports he is unable to get Timbuktu 4.8 to work with his B&W G3 internal modem and that Netopia's and Apple's support pages had no solutions. [4/17/99 Update: He later reported that using the 'Generic 56K' script solved the problem.]
FaxSTF Fix TIL: A friend at Apple wrote to there is a new TIL 30948 that addresses the FaxSTF/B&W G3 issues reported here recently. I'll not use FaxSTF regardless, but if anyone can verify this does solve the problem let me know.
Force V.90 Script: After Thomas Andre reported a connect rate of 57.6K, I suspected this script (see below for link) is reporting the UART speed, not the actual connect rate. I asked him to test download speeds to see if the script provided an improvement and he replied that there was really no difference btween the Apple standard script and the ForceV.90 script.
Another B&W G3 owner reported that he had to remove FaxSTF to prevent lockups and crashes with modem connections. I'm baffled how Apple could not have seen this, and it's disturbing that the very software bundled with the modem is apparently a major cause of problems with it. Perhaps there will be an update to FaxSTF to address this in the future. Otherwise I'd strongly suggest removing it (I never installed it on my B&W G3 as I did not like the software's interface after trying it last year on the beige G3). This non-B&W G3 owner reports he also had problems with FaxSTF and determined the cause:
" Last fall I was engaged in the process of finding a new job. I ordered FaxSTF version 3.2 to simplify the process of faxing out resumes. After installing the software I immediately started having the modem connection problems described on your page as of late. After spending some time investigating the phenomena, I traced the problem to the 'Queue Watcher' and 'Queue Monitor' system extensions that were loaded as part of the fax suite. As a result, I created a start-up group just for faxing, and run with the STF extensions off the rest of the time...
Mike Del Fava "More FaxSTF/B&W Modem Problems: Another reader agrees with the earlier post, indicating that removing FaxSTF solved his Apple internal modem problems:
"Hi Mike - Wanted to you let you know that there's more than one reader out there who believes there's a problem with FaxSTF 5 and the B&W G3's internal modem. A friend of mine was lucky enough to get one of the new machines, and I helped him set it up; got it out of the box and online in no time flat, only to have it crash consistently in both IE and Netscape. Did some playing with the extensions, and discovered that the problem seemingly went away if all the Fax STF related bits were turned off... I've referred him back to the store who sold the machine to him (couldn't find any 'known issues' at the time) but he hasn't heard back yet.
A great site, as always. Thanks !
Jaap Tuinman "As noted below this is the 2nd report in 24 hours that removing FaxSTF solved problems. I've added this to the B&W G3 Compatibility page as well.
Some Modem Problems FaxSTF related?: This reader says his modem problems and crashing was solved by removing the Fax software that is shipped with the Apple internal modem:
" thanks for the note. i already use the scripts of your page and they work fine. not a single disconnect in the last 10 hours. but i had to uninstall fax stf because after 1 to 4 minutes of being online the computer constantly crashed (freezed). after the uninstall: no problem! strange...
kaspar "I never installed FaxSTF on my B&W G3, as I did not like the interface (software was harder to use and poorly organized in my opinion) when I tried it from my Beige G3 internal modem last year.
Amazing Force V.90 Script Report: A reader reports the Force v.90 script (see below) made an incredible difference in connect rates:
" Just a quick feedback on the K56Flex and V.90 modem scripts you linked on your main page this weekend. My mother had been getting at most 26.4kps on her Rev A iMac, on Earthlink, no matter what local POP number she used. Even with various Apple modem scripts, 3rd party scripts, FreePPP and all the latest Apple iMac/modem updates, the modem refused to go above 26.4kps. I had begun to wonder if the modem was somehow defective. The ForceV.90 script you linked works fantastically! Now connects at 48kps every time, with the same POP number she'd been getting 26.4 with since she bought the machine.
Thanks!
Michael B. Sneider, M.D. "More alternative modem scripts that force 56K or V.90 modes:
" Here is another B&W modem script link from the Apple Tech ExchangeI'm trying the V90 script to see what results I get. After trying the scripts I noted in my original post (also from the Tech Exchange) I've not experienced persistent disconnect problems with all of those scripts.
Thanks to Laz for originally posting these on the Tech Exchange.

Another reader notes his performance with alternative scripts:
" hi Mike,
The networking that goes on at your site really provide a unique service for the Mac community.I've tried out 3 new modem scripts for my blue and white G3, one day each for each script. They are High Speed, Rapid, and Blind dial 56k. does anyone know anything about the blind dial script? i realize i need more time to give a truly objective reading, but thought i'd share some results.
all three are a VAST improvement over the script that shipped with my pre-installed 56k apple modem. the pre-installed script was routinely disconnecting.
So far i find that all three scripts show pretty much the same speeds, letting me connect at about 50k and download at about 5k. the high speed script was the only one that disconnected, which happened once, after i let it sit for five minutes without activity. Who knows if it's a function of bad code or bad phone lines. No disconnects on the rapid script after several hours of connection. No disconnects on the blind script either. The blind script had the highest download by a slight margin. One download on the blind script set a new record for my machine---6.4k. I'll keep trying all three for a few weeks and report back again.

Jim Nollman "
More Alternate Modem Script reports:
"Mike:
I also was having trouble with the internal modem, rate would always connect at 28.8. I installed two iMac scripts and both have increased the connect rate to 38.4 (the fastest my telephone line will consistently accept). I also have a US Robotics 56K modem that will connect at 38.8 sometimes 42.6, so I accept the 38.4 internal rate. The two scripts are called iMac S9255 No Carrier and iMac S10 Random Disconnect. I will send them to you, if you don't already have them.
beth "And more Modem Script Tests:
"I tried the set of scripts with a B&W G3. The 56k High Speed gives me the best results with no disconnects. (Additionally, the Null Modem 56K script is excellent for computer-computer exchanges.) ARA shows a connect speed of 57.6K, as reported. When I load up ZTerm and check the speed via AT commands, I show a line speed of 57.6K, and a port speed of 230K, as it should be! Either the modem's reporting back odd stuff, or something weird is going on.However, in the ReadMe for the scripts, it does state that some of the scripts permit 56k modems to exceed to legal 53.3K (or whatever it is) limit on 56K modems. Sounds a little like Apple's promises regarding the GeoPod modems, but who knows....
Montage Graphics "This reader says GV's scripted and even FreePPP helped:
"Hey Mike,
I've got a B&W G3 300 with an Apple 56K modem. Was using the Powermac G3 internal modem script, but experienced frequent disconnects. However, Remote Access reported a connect speed of 49333 every time. My download speeds seemed to increase while using the Global Village 56K script, although it says communicating at an uunknown rate (due to compression). Download times are in the 4.5K/sec range. Get this. If I switch my connecton in the TCP/IP control panel to FreePPP (sharware PPP, v 2.6.2) and dial out using FreePPP instead of Remote Access, I don't know what my connection speed is, but my download times are consistently in the low 5K/sec range. No more dissconnect problems either, unless of course my ISP is at fault(rare)
Scott Patten "I've never used FreePPP based on past reader comments on possible compatibility issues (might be tempting after trying the alternative modem scripts)
"add my name to people having serious problems with the b&w modem. i live in a rural area, and have regularly been getting connections of 48k, but they always disconnect after five or ten minutes. my local ISP says its a function of fast speed and funky lines. now i see it may be something else as well.it seems to me this is basic bad design on apple's part and they need to solve the problem for all the customers who have been foundering around with b&w issues---this being the most glaring. how about it, apple, get courteous and get the problem fixed and then contact all your customers with FREE fixes.
regards, Jim Nollman "Original Disconnect Problem Post:
Erik Walstad sent a note on disconnect problems with B&W G3 Apple internal modems.
" Michael57K is too high to be the actual connect -that is the modem Uart speed I suspect. As all of you know I'm sure, disconnect problems have plagued many apple modems of late (iMac, PB G3, etc.). However in limited use my BW G3 modem so far seems ok (I disable call waiting - one reason disconnects can happen as well). I personally wish Apple would use a 3COM/USR chipset, as I've always had better luck with 3COM/USR or other originally X2-based modems (higher connect rates - literally no disconnects).
Well, I've done a bit more research and testing on the Internal G3 Modem disconnect problem. There are many more users on the Apple Tech Exchange Forums encountering the frequent disconnect issue. Damon of Apple Support has been collecting information and monitoring the messages for a while. In a recent thread he posted this message. Here is an out take:
[Another user reported:
Try this- http://www.macntosh.com/macara105.hqx - , install it, and pick a modem script. I am having much luck with the one called '56K High Speed'. The only disadvantage is a slight, semi lock-up while it is connecting/disconnecting that didn't happen before but that I understand is not uncommon.
Damon
Apple Support Discussions]Well I gave it a try and I'm glad to report that so far, so good. The Remote Access connection speed shows up as 57600, and whether or not I'm really getting that kind of speed, things are loading in the 40K and about range, so I can't really complain too much. It's the fastest connection I've ever seen on this line, and no disconnect problems. I'm not experiencing the 'semi lock-up' he describes in the message. I will let you know if I encounter a disconnect or other strange symptom.
Regards,
Erik Walstad "
