| Cache Control Software | |
Since the ProG3 ZIF upgrade worked fine in my Beige G3 without any need for cache control software, I did not install it. I've always taken the 'lean and mean' approach to adding extensions and control panels to any Mac. In my opinion, the fewer extensions (esp. 3rd party ones) the better as far as efficiency, stability and compatibility. Since the Beige G3's ROM enabled the ProG3 upgrade's backside cache at the rated speed (1/2 the CPU speed), I suggest you not bother with installing any cache control software as it's just one more thing to add to the compatibility mix. Although software controls allow boosting cache speeds, from what I have seen in real world applications tests, backside cache speed is not a primary factor in performance so don't push the bleeding edge on cache speed as it can affect reliability.
