Page 3 - Heatsink Clip Plays a Critical Role in CPU Cooling

Note: This guide was written using an CarrierZIF card with the original flat plate heatsink. Later they switched to a smaller finned one. However the info here and tips still apply. (Including the note on the heatsink clip orientation.)

Proper Heatsink Clip Mounting - Dual Hole on Switch Side of Card
heatsink clip end

The proper installation of the heatsink clip is critical for proper CPU Cooling, as the 'pressure point' bend on the clip must be over the CPU (which is not in the center of the heatsink). This ensures maximum contact pressure of the heatsink against the CPU. When the two-hole end of the heatsink clip is on the switch side of the card the pressure point of the clip will be in the correct position. The 2nd (upper) small hole is used to remove the clip with the small screwdriver supplied with the CarrierZIF.

End View of Card

The above end view of the card shows how the clip pressure point (bend) is over the cpu chip on the ZIF module when the heatsink retaining clip is properly oriented.

Always double-check that the clip is properly installed - otherwise the CPU will overheat causing crashes and reliability problems. Beige and B&W G3 owners should also take note - reversing the heatsink clip is possible on those systems as well.

The next page of this guide covers compatible ZIF modules for use with the CarrierZIF. Or you can use the links below to jump to another part of this guide or other related links.
