There are many ZIF CPU modules on the market now; most are compatible with the CarrierZIF. The exceptions were originally mentioned in my First Look and Review of the CarrierZIF. without any motherboard jumper changes are not recommended for use. Why are these 'hard-wired' (bus/CPU ratio fixed on the ZIF) not compatible? Because these ZIF models are set to a fixed Bus/CPU ratio which cannot be changed by the CarrierZIF card and one that assumes a 66MHz or higher bus speeds of the Apple G3s. Since the CarrierZIF (in most macs) can't run near a 66MHz bus speed you will never be able to run the CPU at the rated speed (since bus speed times ratio = CPU speed). Here are a list of ZIFs that are compatible (this is not a complete list):
If you have any doubt about compatibility, ask the vendor of the ZIF if it is compatible with the CarrierZIF. See my CPU Cards page for reviews of various models of G3 ZIF upgrades.
