Voodoo3 Beta 13 ROM/Driver Feedback:
Last Updated: 12/29/2000, 2:01 PM
(download link revised 4/6/2004)
Several readers sent comments on using the "unofficial" beta 13 ROM update/drivers. (as of early April 2004, the download is still available at ftp://ftp.ausmac.net/pub/mac/Games-SW/MacGameFiles/updates/MacVoodoo.sea.bin but that may change over time.) One reader noted the issues with his ColorSync 17" monitor were not fixed. One reader noted that the SNES emulator didn't work with the update so he went back to the previous version. (Note: For earlier versions, a reader said that http://www.clanmacgaming.com/files.php has mirrored them.)
The B13 ROM update appears to have enabled deep sleep mode according to this reader report:

" Mike,
It appears that it is indeed the B13 ROM that allows the deep sleep. I never would have guessed it. The documentation with the B13 ROM was practically nil. I would have thought what I consider a major feature like this would have been mentioned.

I "believe" I've removed all of Sleeper and its settings, but you never know with some of these sneaky programs. Maybe you can coax someone with a B13 ROM and a "clean" (not have had Sleeper installed) system to verify the results.
Regards,
John Macdonald "

This reader reported the SNES9x emulator didn't work with the update:

" I've ran the demos that you suggested with the new Voodoo drivers for the Voodoo 3. I lost about 2 tenths of an FPS. I also lost the ability to do SNES9X in Rave mode. I flashed back and went to the old drivers.

" Hi Mike,
I just installed a new PCI Voodoo3 3000 in my G3 MiniTower 266 oc'd 300. 1.0b12 was first installed....great, no problems. Istalled 1.0b13 udate, flashed the rom, and PERFECT. Both used for Unrea, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, SiN demo, Rune Demo. Everything is great and Im happy with my V3. And its my birthday!
tekno "

I asked if he noticed any improved performance with the update. Beta12 had some 2d issues as I remember (many went back to Beta11 because of this).

" I reflashed my V3 2000 PCI with the beta 13 c3 ROM, and everything works fine. I was going to bechmark some games against previous scores I had recieved with the beta 12 rom, but I realized that the previous rom was overclocked to 163Mhz. I figured I'd do the same, but V3 Clocker doesn't recognize the rom and says it's invalid.(I'll email the author about adding support for this rom). My only other choice was to leave it alone or reflash with the beta 13 3000 rom. Suprisingly, it works fine, and is detected as a 3000 instead of a 2000 by MacVoodoo cp.No video out though :)

I still can't compare game performance since the 3000 rom is 166Mhz, and I really don't feel like backflashing to a beta 12. Oh well. I'll check how QW and AQ2 play with the new rom tonight, I'll email you if i see some remarkable boost.
haxor"

I asked what he meant by "no video out", not sure if he meant the card didn't work at 166mhz.

This reader reported he's still having problems with this 17" monitor after the update:

" Hi Mike,
just want to tell you that I've tried this unofficial beta 13 ROM for the Voodoo cards to check out if the problem not recognizing my Colorsync 17" monitor remains - you know about it.

No way, the same **** like beta12, so I have to run beta11 forever.

Doesn't have tested games, just the demo of Shogo - it runed with beta11 ROM and drivers after I've tried it with beta13 to switch to OpenGL 800x600/16bit my machine crashed.

So, can't say if the games are running better or not, my interest is to have my Colorsync recognized as Colorsync not as AppleVision, you know what I mean.
My conf:

8500 upgraded to XLR/CarrierZIF with original Apple G3/233 card, running without probs at 250 MHz,
176 MB RAM,
Voodoo3/2000 - beta11 ROM and drivers,
USB PCI card,
PC100MHz Apple card,
various SCSI drives, 2 internally, 3 externally
MacOS 9.04 with alll updates.
Regards,
Adrian "

John M. said he was using the B13 ROM with the Voodoo4/5 1.1.3beta (unofficial) drivers since they had later extension versions.

If you've tested before the update and after with your Voodoo3, let me know your results. (Include your system/driver/card details in the email.)
