|PowerCenter owner comments AV Optimizer solves Sonnet Tempo ATA/66 Card Stuttering Audio:|
Last Updated: 11/5/2001
(Updated 12/14/2001 for another report)
Stuttering audio has been a fairly common issue with PCI IDE cards in older Macs when playing back files from the IDE card's drives. (It's also been a common problem for older macs with PCI SCSI cards - the fix was to slow the card clock rate.) |
A reader replied the Acard AV Optimizer recently released (noted in last Tuesday's news page) solved this problem with a Sonnet Tempo ATA/66 card in a PowerCenter. He included FWB benchmark test results with AV mode on and off.
I have an accelerated PowerComputing PowerCenter with a Sonnet Tempo ATA66
card suffering from the stuttering sound problem. The AV Optimizer
application from Acard really solved the problem, but just like the
application from Sonnet for their ATA100 card it does lower performance.
A nice touch is that you can turn on and off AV mode without restarting.
Using applications like Freehand while playing songs in iTunes was no
problem, but a disk intensive application like Photoshop felt noticeably slower.
Supplied in this mail are on and off graphics. [performance graphs]
Thanks for producing the Mac-tech site with the most accurate information.
All the best

(FYI: The Acard (IDE PCI card mfr) AV Optimizer (for OS 9.x use) download link from 2001 was removed, after the source file no longer at that URL. Acard may have moved the file or removed it. I checked Acard's site (June 2009) downloads page and found a new URL that notes OS X in the filename however - http://dl.acard.com/download/mac/AV_Optimizor_OSX.zip.)
(More reader feedback from the 12/14/2001 www.xlr8yourmac.com news page)
once again, thanks for a great site and for your prompt response to my
emails and questions...
now - on to the "AV-optimizer" - the thing WORKS!!!!!
i haven't done a lot of testing... but i've been plagued by the dreaded
sound/video skipping/dropout that's been inherent with the older macs and ide cards... i've got an 8500/120 that's been upgraded to a G3-295 using a railgun card. i bought the tempo 66 card and have been using it to drive a
WD 45 gig cavier drive...
up until tonight, if i wanted to hear any "full" song (mp3 or whatever)
without glitches, i'd have to transfer the song over to one of my scsi
drives and run it from there...
but just a few minutes ago, i saw the info about the acard's utility -
downloaded it, ran it and for the first time in 9 months, i've got GLITCH
.. what fun! now to try some mpg & video that was suffering
the same problems
once again - T H A N K S ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
the show doctor"
As noted here before (above), there is a performance drop with the AV mode enabled however.
