Comment: In Mac OS 10.0.4 the PowerMac 733 had a clear advantage when opening a single application due to its higher clockspeed. Mac OS 10.1 generally decreases launching time by a factor of 2 or 3 making it almost even.
Application Launch Time II.
Time to open 5 documents of 5 different applications all at once:
Explorer (URL), iTunes (MP3 Track), Quicktime Player (Movie Trailer), TextEdit (ReadMe file), Preview (Picture)
Time in seconds until the last application is ready to use

Comment: Here you clearly see the advantage of multiple CPU's:
OS X spreads the tasks to both CPU's resulting in considerably faster launching time.

Comment: No tests from me without Quake3.
Quake3's multiprocessing support was enabled (r_smp 1 - as by default). No excessive tests today because a new version (1.29g) is supposed to come out on Monday (according to IMG).
Notes: The "feel" of Mac OS 10.1 is really nice: snappy menus, pretty fast window resizing in the Finder, streamlined SystemPreferences with better ornanized interface and more options, short application launching tme, sleep (even deep sleep) now works even when PCI cards are installed (of course the cards still have to be deep sleep compatible to support that feature - same as in Mac OS 9.x).
Of course there are still some quirks in this preview version, and the DVD Players is not there yet. But it does look VERY promising. I'm really looking forward to the final release - it should rock!
For discussion about 10.1 head to http://bbs.xlr8yourmac.com/ubb/Forum13/HTML/000892.html.
And finally a big Thank You to Mike for all his work on this awesome site!
