More OS X 10.1.3 Update Reports - Good and Bad
Last Updated: 2/28/2002

Here's a listing of reader reports on various pros and cons they've seen after the 10.1.3 update. (I'm am hundreds of mails behind this week alone, so this is just a tiny sample of reader emails on 10.1.3.) DVD Player related reports are on a separate page.

So far I personally have updated a PB G4/667, G4/Cube (w/Dual G4/500), and G4/500 DP system (Radeon AGP system, retail Toshiba R1102 combo drive). The DVD Player works fine on all three of those systems. However my DP500 lost its airport settings after the update and the HP950 (AIO) no longer worked properly (Scan, Print, etc. dimmed in HP Director, no device seen on USB port.) Removing/reinstalling the HP950 4.03 driver solved that problem.

Just a FYI also that one reader with an iBook 600 noted sleep mode problems that he said were solved after doing a reinstall from a downloaded 10.1.3 updater. Some readers said zapping the pram helped solve some of their odd problems.

Fixing the Wallstreet 'Fan on during Sleep' Bug in MacOS X (from the 2/28/2002 www.xlr8yourmac.com news page)
I've not run OS X on my PB G3 wallstreet, but Domingo Alvear sent a link to a page that has a fix for the "Fan on during Sleep" bug. Here's a clip from the page by Juan Cabanela that was posted yesterday:

"Ever since MacOS X came out, there has been a very annoying bug for Wallstreet PowerBook users. If you place the Wallstreet to sleep, and then unplug it, the fan in the PowerBook comes on and will not turn off. This rapidly drains the battery, somewhat eliminating the benefit of placing the system to sleep. "

For his full comments and fix for the problem - see http://homepage.mac.com/juancabanela/WallStreetFix.html.

Wavelan (Wireless) PCCcard Drivers Note: As mentioned in the main www.xlr8yourmac.com site news page, both the Wavelan PCCard drivers in the FAQ's OS X and Networking section have been reported to work fine in OS X 10.1.3. (To read the specific reader comments on these - see the Feb 18-22 news summary page, which has links to each news item from the last week.)

Microtech Cardreader Driver Tip for OS X 10.1.3: Not everyone reported a problem with their last driver update and 10.1.3, but at least one reader did. Mike C. sent an email with a link to a Microtech FAQ page that might help those that had problems. (This same tip was also noted here earlier this week in a reader's ZIO! smartmedia comments below)
(From the Microtech FAQ page)

" I updated to Mac OS 10.1.3 and my reader no longer works. How can I fix this?

Please note: You must be logged in as the "Root" account. If you are unsure if you are logged in as Root, or do not know how to log in as Root, you will need to go to the Apple Support site to learn how.

1.Double-Click on the "Hard Drive" Icon located on the desktop
    2.Double-Click on the "System" folder
    3.Double-Click on the "Library" folder
    4.Double-Click on the "Extensions" Folder
    5.Find the extension:

    • For the ZiO! SM, SnapShot SM and USB CameraMate: eUSB SmartMedia 10.1.2.kext.
    • For the ZiO! CF: USBatCF.kext and USBatCF10.1.2.kext

6.Drag and drop the extension into the trash
    7.Reboot the Computer
8.Once the computer has restarted empty the trash

At this point, try and insert your media and it should work fine. "

Note: Although the reader tip below shows there's still a driver remaining (assuming a previous Microtech driver install) - one reader said that he had to reinstall the Microtech driver after the removing the .kext noted above.

Here's a listing of reader comments (emails) that I have gotten to so far.

Epson SCSI Expression 636 Scanner Reports:

" I have an Epson Expression 636 SCSI scanner connected to an Adaptec 3940UW in my 8500/G3. Epson has no drivers for this scanner on OS X. Prior to 10.1.3, VueScan would either cause a kernel panic on quit, or would hang the system infinitely scanning the SCSI bus even if the scanner wasn't attached or was attached to the motherboard bus. After installing 10.1.3, VueScan now works with my scanner - no kernal panics, no hangs, and good scans.
    Wes "

I assume Wes used Ryan Rempel's utility for OS X installs on unsupported Macs. (Available at this OWC page.)
(The Adaptec 3940UW was not supposed to be supported by Adaptec for OS X according to their page last year. I asked Wes why he didn't use the external Mac SCSI port for the scanner, since even it's 5MB/sec interface should be adequate for a scanner. But if it's working - I'd not mess with it.)
Wes later wrote in reply to some questions I had.

" Yes, the latest version (XPostFacto) gave me support for SCSI CDRW with 10.1.2 (SCSI Helper didn't work). Great utility! It also works much better than System Disk to reboot from 9 into X.

I have been using the 3940UW since OS X Public Beta. Adaptec isn't any help - drivers come with stock OS X. Funny thing is that the 3940UW won't work with any variant of linux I've tried - it's recognized but hangs at the beginning of the boot process scanning the SCSI bus. Both channels work just fine, but it isn't bootable into OS X. I have other disk drives, CDRW, scanners, etc. on the 3940UW.

No particular reason [for not using onboard ext. SCSI] other than I already have a bunch of devices on that bus, and the second channel on the 3940UW was available.

I did try using VueScan with the scanner on the motherboard bus. Not only did it not see the scanner, but my system became completly unusable - it was stuck scanning the SCSI bus over and over and over (I could see it on the external motherboard bus). It would take 30 seconds to a minute to get a mouse click processed. Even with the scanner disconnected, I had this problem on the second launch of VueScan within a given reboot. All (known SCSI) problems gone with 10.1.3 - well, except for no support for my Paperport VX.
    Wes "

I still have an old 3940UW card here, which was used in an old article on 4 Drive RAID inside a 8600. I know OS X has support for any SCSI card that shipped as a BTO option, but didn't know they had used the 3940UW in the past (I knew they used the 3950U2B and 39160s and 2940U2Bs, ATTO UW, Jackhammer, etc. cards in various systems.)
Another reader replied to that post saying he's also using a 636 scanner with his Initio Bluenote SCSI card in a Dual 1GHz Mac:

    " Mike
I have a Expression 636 connected to a Miles BlueNote working fine with VueScan on my 1gHzDP with 10.1.3. What I can't get to work is my Nikon LS200. VueScan sees the scanner, even starts the scanner up but no image appears in the VueScan.
The Miles came out of my old 9600.
    William "

Wallstreet Owner Notes Better PCMCIA Support:

    " Mike,
I wanted to let you know that, at least with my Wallstreet 250, OS X 10.1.3 seems to have fixed some PCMCIA issues as well. My Macally USB card would never work after the system went to sleep--that is now resolved. Also, I have had a Bullet Drive Express PCMCIA expansion card for an external hard drive for some time. Under OS 9, it was plug and play, no drivers ever needed. When I went to OS X, it would not work at all. Well, 10.1.3 has resolved that problem--it works great. I can now finally use my old 10gb drive.

If anybody is interested in these (they are an inexpensive way to salvage an old drive), you can go to www.igo.com to find them.
    Thanks for the great site.
    Mark "

MPEG 1 Playback Comments:

"Mike, Ditto here on MPEG playback in 10.1.3. It's unwatchable on my G4/733 QS with 1GB of RAM. However, MPEGs playback perfectly in third-party applications, so it's a problem with QuickTime Player itself.
    -Damien S."

(Earlier reports follow)

    " Hi Mike,
I have upgraded to 10.1.3 on two computers; a PowerMac G4 867 and a PowerBook G3 400 (Pismo). I usually use QT with the Get Info page open. After the 10.1.3 update, I went to play an MPEG1 file (.mpg) on my PBG3 and it chugged along at 0 fps. Audio would continue but the frame wouldn't update for secs at a time. After a day or so, I was about to reinstall 10.1.3 on my PB until I got around to trying it on my G4. Same problem.
Then, I accidentally hit the close button on Get Info, and my .mpg file began playing normally right away. Went back to my PBG3, closed Get Info, and everything played just fine.

This only happens with 10.1.3 and MPEG1 files. .movs and the various .avi files work fine with the Get Info page open.

I have gotten other people to replicate the problem on their computers.
    A.J. "

Another reader wrote:

" MPEG-1 performance sucks royally unless you go into full-screen mode and even then it's not so great. On a DP/450/2Gb RAM setup, in a small 320 x 240 window performance is about 2fps at best. Re-nicing (increasing system priority) of Quicktime Player in terminal to a high number (-18 or -20) results in a marginal improvement. Needless to say under OS 9, I can play 4 MPEG-1 windows simultaneously at full speed. Under X I can't.

DVD playback in a small window happens without any problem under OS X. So something's broken in the MPEG-1 playback routines for 10.1.3 and Quicktime 5.0.6.

Computer-to-Computer Airport networks still randomly quit for no apparent reason.
    Other than that, no problems...
    Dieder "

Another reader says otherwise:

" Not here. G3 400 in a beige system. Mpg's play just fine. No change at all from previous versions.
    jon "

Better SCSI CDRW Support: Based on reports so far, the update seems to be a plus for SCSI CDRW owners (without needing El Gato's drivers).

    " Hello Mike,
I read the comments on the recent 10.1.3 upgrade and they seemed mostly negative. Thought I would let you know that the update installed flawlessly on my B&W G3 (rev.2) and that X finally recognizes my Yamaha 8824 (scsi) as a burner as well as a reader (previously, I would have to boot to 9.2.1 to burn discs). ITunes also recognizes the burner now.
So, it's been a useful upgrade for me.
    fyi,
    Kevin"

I told Kevin that it's normal to hear about more problems than success stories - even if only 1 in 100 have problems, you're 100x more likely to hear about the problem report. (The idea on posting them is to see a) are they common and b) if not what is the reason/factor for the user's specific problem.)

    " Hi Mike,
This is a update to the previous drive report I sent a couple of months back. I have a Yamaha CRW2100 ext. SCSI writer. I have never had to install the El Gato SCSI helper and could burn fine in X (10.1 onwards) with Toast. Although Apple System Profiler and iTunes recognized the drive as supported, burning would fail just before the burn started, giving some kind of error.
However, with 10.1.3 I'm able to burn CD's fine with iTunes. It detects the max. burn speed as 16x and burns at that speed. Haven't tried burning from the Finder. Will try that later when I have enough data to fill a CD. I just hope 10.1.3 stays stable (been up now for 7 hours....10.1.2 would crash sometimes within minutes of boot...never stay up beyond 2 hours ,so I had to go back to 10.1.1).
    Regards George M.P. "

And another reader noted:

" Just an FYI that 10.1.3 seems to have removed the need for the ElGato SCSI CDRW helper in order to use a SCSI CDRW. Just removed ElGato's .kext from the System Extension folder, rebooted and Apple System Profiler reports CDRW 'Apple Disc Burning Supported'.
    Cool.
Quicktime has also been updated to 5.0.6 with a DVUpdate and a JPEG update too.
    Dieder"

I ask readers to also post a drive database report on their OS X 10.1.3 experiences also.

G4/450 Owner notes FAXstf X working with internal modem after 10.1.3 Update

    " Mike:
I purchased Fax stf X from Smith Micro about a month ago as I needed a fax program in OS X. There was a problem with adding the internal modem as a printer in my Dual G4 450 when setting up Fax stf X. I would consistently get a "-108" error. Smith Micro said it was an Apple problem, and Apple couldn't fix the problem with Tech Support.

After upgrading to 10.1.3, I tried adding the mode as a printer. No problems whatsoever. I can now fax from my G4 running OS X!

This will now help all of those who need to fax, like myself.
    John N."

Nvram Reset Tip Solves Reader's OS X 10.1.3 USB Problems:

    " Mike,
Might want to ask readers to reset three things in Open Firmware. I couldn't get my Tri-Media to work (and the whole USB bus froze). This after doing the update!
So on a whim, I restarted into Open Firmware and reset parameters:

    - reset-nvram
    - set-defaults
    - reset-all

Everything works now. Could it be that simple?
    Ed S."

(For OF based macs, booting with Command+Option+O+F will boot into the OF terminal where you can enter these commands.)
For older Mac owners - try Zapping the PRAM (Command+Option+P+R keys held down at boot until the mac 'bongs' at least 3 times.). One reader noted this helped in the past with a DVD player problem.

" Just a quick note: after the 10.1.3 update I can't su to root on my Beige G3 or my Powerbook (Bronze/USB) in the terminal. Both passwords are correct and I can even change them in the NetInfo Manager. I can also enable root user in NetInfo Manager. Very annoying.
    Mark V"

    " Hi Mike,
After upgrading to 10.1.3 (g4dp500) and rebooting into 9.2.2, my Cinema Display light started blinking and 9.2.2 would not come up.
    I booted into DiskWarrior and repaired 9.2.2 & 10.1.3.

Since then, I have not experienced any more problems and noticed a fantastic improvement in threading.

    The Bad:
My Sony (FireWire) digital deck appears in the Profiler, under 10.1.3, but is no longer recognized under iMovie. It does see the (FireWire) digital camcorder and cdrw.

I've had one report that the ZIO! driver update yesterday worked as is in OS 10.1.3, one they didn't - here's the latest comments:

    ZiO workaround in 10.1.3
    " Hi Mike,
Okay, after reading the thread over in Version Tracker, much gnashing of teeth over conflicting solutions and repeated deletion of the TWO kext files that the 1.03 Zio Smart media updater package installs, I finally have success with it under OS X 10.1.3!

    The fix.
In system/library/extensions, delete the extension labeled "eUSB Smartmedia 10.1.2.kext" and KEEP the one labeled "eUSB SmartMedia.kext." With just this ONE kext extension, the ZiO now mounts on the desktop as an Unlabeled disk, launches iPhoto automatically and shows up in the iPhoto import bar as an "eUSB Smart Media Adapter." (Like its supposed to.)
    Pead "

    " Hi Mike!
Thought you'd like to know that when I attempted to install the new 10.1.3 update on my bronze G3 Powerbook (USB, no FireWire), I got as far as "Installing" from the Software Update.

Right at the end before the status bar was almost complete, my system froze up, with Aqua and the dock freezing- only the mouse movement was working. After waiting about 20 or 30 minutes, I rebooted via the power switch, and now all I get is a grey screen with a mouse- it never looks for a system folder, and booting off of the CD doesn't work either.

Note on the configuration: I added an additional 256MB of RAM to the stock 64MB I had, and I swapped out the stock 4.3GB Travelstar internal hard drive with a 20GB Travelstar drive- both were done two weeks ago. I was running OS X on a 4 GB partition, OS 9.2.2 on a 3 GB partition, and the rest of the disk was split between two OS X and OS 9 partitions where I kept files and apps.
I hope this is an isolated case!
    Cheers!
    Marty "

" Hello, Mike...just to let you know that while installing and downloading 10.1.3 to update 10.1.2 on an external SCSI drive through a INITIO Miles card upgraded for OS X, on my G4-450 MP, that the upgrader destroyed the 10.2..1 installation by severely damaging the finder and a number of system resources. The hard disk directory was also severely damaged.

I do not know if the install to my firewire external drive with 10.1.2 would have been any better (that's right...OS X is not in any of my internal ATA drives, and will not go on there until the software is more reliable than it is now).

IMHO, this has to be the worst installation I have ever had. OS X is bad enough with its 15 - 20+ megabyte upgrades that have to be done in strict succession in order to work. But this takes the cake.

Will be interesting to see who else gets bit by this....
    sincerely, Kurt W."

I'd write Initio tech support to see if they have any ideas/suggestions. I've been running OS X on IDE drives since day one, no real problems. (I think most OS X users are using IDE drives in fact.)

" 10.1.3 also breaks the new Zio drivers released today. My Zio compact flash reader worked for a whole two hours this afternoon before the OS update broke it again.....
Take care and thanks for the great site
    Todd"

(the same thing happened to some Cardreader drivers after the 10.1.2 update. Reminds me of the golden rule of updates - "If it Ain't Broke - don't Fix it".) Another reader said the drivers still worked:

" Mike, I can confirm without a doubt - 10.1.3 does NOT break the new Zio drivers.
I installed the Zio drivers and got my Zio CF reader working on 10.1.2. I then updated to 10.1.3 and everything still works.
Note: As a bonus the card reader and my Nikon 885 both work plugged into the keyboard with OS X - this is not the case with OS 9.
    I'm using a 466/G4 tower.
    anthony m. "

" I wrote in on 01/29/2002 about a G4 Cube and a Lite-On 24x10x40 CD-RW and an OWC Mercury Firewire case. The burner was recognized by both iTunes and DiscBurner in OS X 10.1.2 but the burns would not finish. I installed Toast 5.1.1 and Toast burns fine.
Update: After installing the 10.1.3 update last night I was able to burn using DiscBurner and iTunes with no problems. It looks like Apple update DiscBurner and iTunes for this drive.
Just thought I would let you know.

    Todd S. "

" After updating to Mac OS X 10.1.3 from 10.1.2, I can no longer get my classic folder to highlite in the OS X start up disk panel. So i am stuck in OS X for now. I was wondering has anyone else been able to choose a classic folder to start up from after updating on a Beige G3 tower?
    he later wrote
Well I booted into safe mode did an fsck -y, then a reboot. now the folder is coming up. so problem solved. Don't know what was wrong but if this happens to happen to someone else just boot into safe mode and run a disk check. "

" Just installed it a 1/2 hour ago. Not a big game player, but did enjoy RTCW. It is no longer playable (thanks Apple Q and A). The mouse has slowed downed to where it would take me 20 secs to turn around. I am familiar with Wolf leaving this at a low speed, but this is something different. Anyone else?

    he later wrote
Well, it appears to be unique to Wolf. Just tried AvP and mouse control was normal. I'm still pissed I can no longer play Wolf. Oh, I could still play, but the analogy would be a guy with a butter knife going against a guy with an M60 machine gun.
Seriously, anyone else seeing this? I've tried tweaking mouse settings in Wolf to no avail. "

" Well, thanks to 10.1.3 I now have the following issues:
    * main monitor no longer supports 75hz at 1152x870. I have to either drop down to 1024x780, or stick with the excruciating 60hz refresh.
    * mouse tracking doesn't seem to always follow usb overdrive's settings. For example, when I started mail, I temporarily had the horribly 1-1 ratio when moving the mouse short distances.

Anyone else had any problems? I hate 1024x780 - I can hardly fit anything on that screen. So instead I'm using the 60hz refresh rate which has me about ready to pass out. The problem when I run at 75hz is that a tiny bit of the left side of my screen is cut off and replaced by a bright white vertical line. Any help?
    -Dogcow "moof!"
    he later wrote
Hm, by putting my samsung on my voodoo3 (secondary) and my sony on my geforce2 (primary) the white line problem is gone. However, the sony isn't as good, and I'd prefer for the samsung to be my primary. Also, both monitors now have horrible refresh lines. Any suggestions? Should I attack apple? "

" 10.1.3 screwed me over too! I was installing the update via the control panel and oops!!!(sounds like a certain win98 demonstration at CNN few years ago)... I got the spinning beach ball for about 20 minutes, well that's how long I waited before doing a "sudo reboot" from a remote computer. Don't worry I tried to kill about everything from that remote computer with no effect at all before issuing the command. Now enough bad news for me,how the hell can I verify if the installation took place? he update panel won't allow me to redo the install and when I do try to start the pkg install from the receipt folder I get an error, damn it!
    (QS DP800 and GeForce2MX) "

" After installing 10.1.3 and rebooting my GeForce 2 MX 400 [The PNY verto] stopped working. After the happy mac goes away the screen just goes black.

The card worked great with out flashing it or anything in every other version of 10. I would try flashing it but I can't get the flash app to work in os 9 and I can't get the pc to recognize it, it is as if it was already semi-flashed by os X or something.
I have the original ati rage 128 pro in here now...
    400mhz agp G4
    -WiredSoul "

The later G4/AGP firmware update had some nvidia rom code apparently which allowed some PC GeForce2MX cards to work without flashing the card's rom (noted in this article here in April 2001).

There's also a separate page on OS X 10.1.3 and DVD Player Issues some readers saw. (mixed reports)
