Reader reports on OS X 10.3.2 Update
Posted: 12/18/2003
Last Updated: 12/31/2003, 12:00 PM ET (more reader reports)

This page has reader reports on the 10.3.2 update released Wednesday (Dec. 17th). (Apple now has a kbase doc w/standalone 10.3.2 updater.) Included are comments on graphics card driver updates (fixes some issues with ATI and Nvidia cards) as well as some problem reports (not typical here). Two Revolution 7.1 owners also reported it seems to help with the 1.2.9 driver kernel panic issue (their reports were added to the Revolution 7.1 driver feedback page however.)

Apple Kbase Docs on 10.3.2: (downloads, info on changes/fixes)

Tip to fix Slow 10.3.2 Booting:
Posts in Apple's discussion forums have a tip that has helped several readers that reported slow boot times after the 10.3.2 update (commonly reported delay at the login window startup for instance)
http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?14@173.yIU0a22npxJ.3544@.599e61e8
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@@.599e619e/5

Open the terminal and enter

    sudo ln -s /System/Library/Extensions/BootCache.kext/Contents/Resources/BootCacheContro l /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl

The reboot twice and boot times should be reduced. (This helped here on two systems running 10.3.2.) Here's comments on why this helps from one of the apple forum theads:

" Why does it work?
BootCacheControl is called during the startup process to create a cache of files needed to boot (up to the point were the login window is displayed).
In the 10.3.2 version the executable is called from the /etc/rc script twice:
- BootCacheControl
- BootCacheControl tag
both times its called using a shell variable set in /etc/rc which points to /System/Library/Extensions/BootCache.kext/Contents/Resources/BootCacheContro l (and if this would not exist it would point to /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl.)
But there is another important call of the executable from the loginwindow process later:
- /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl autostop 15
Unfortunately the file /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl does not exist on a(ll) updated 10.3.2 system. Thecopy command above takes care of that problem.
Regards, Joachim"

If you've updated to 10.3.2 and it fixes a problem (or creates one) - let me know. (include system/software details in reports - and note if you're using any 3rd party OS addons/mods/haxies. thanks. See above for tip regarding the common slow-booting issue w/10.3.2)

" Mike, Just wanted to give some feedback on installing 10.3 on a bronze keyboard (Lombard) powerbook. I tried installing 10.3 in a variety of ways...from a totally clean (zeros written) hard drive to upgrading from 10.2. I couldn't get my powerbook to load 10.3 at all. I then read on the discussion forums on apple's website about removing the upper RAM dim. Well the first attempt at installing 10.3 resulted in errors, but the next attempt worked.
After my install (which used a 256 meg dim in the lower slot) I put my upper 256 meg dim back in (total of 512 meg) and the system booted and runs perfectly...I put the computer to sleep last night and it sprung back to life this morning with no problem, so I don't really know why the ram needed to be removed for the install.
Love your site! Thanks, David M. "

" I installed Panther on my G4 DP 533. Now my ATI RagePro card is unusable.
I went to the (ATI) driver update page and could find no driver for Mac OSX Panther.
I heard through my local Mac-only shop of others with this problem.
Sincerely, - Dan R
(I asked Dan if he had installed the 10.3.2 update, which includes new ATI (and Nvidia) drivers that fixed some issues (such as the GF4MX problem in older G4 towers) and apple noted that 10.3.2 has support for the VR RagePro card, but he said 10.3.2 didn't help. He also tried the tip in the FAQ (nvram patch for older cards in 10.3) and said that did not help. His other graphics card is a Geforce2MX.)

I was just in working on my tower and am having no luck with the ATI card. Turns out the GeForce card is dandy, even without a Panther driver. It's the ATI card that Panther is not recognizing. I can't remember how old my Rage Pro card is, but there's no Rage Pro driver update for Panther on the ATI site. Maybe if ATI won't give me a refund, I can trade it in for a newer, dual-head card. What I'm getting now is one monitor performing flawlessly and the other VGA monitor appearing in black and white, very pixelated, and with the settings choices limited to only 640 x 480 and 256 colours. But even 256 colours would be better than what I'm seeing . Both monitors worked fine under 9.2.2 and Jaguar.

" Hi Mike! I can confirm the problem of Rob E. (added Dec. 23 2003 below) with a slightly different configuration
The problem:
full-screen games won't display with 10.3.2 (the display indicates an invalid video mode)

My configuration:
G3 B&W with a Radeon 7000 PCI Mac Edition and a Cinema Display 20" connected via an DVI->ADC adapter
I don't know if the problem existed with 10.3 but everything is fine when using 10.2.8

" Hi Mike - A week or so back (Dec. 22nd post below), I sent you a report about my system hanging up on web access (under 10.3.2). The system would essentially freeze. For the holidays, we purchased a G4 iBook for my daughter and she ran into exactly the same problem. We have DSL at our house and I've seen a few reports of similar problems with DSL. But we've always had routers in-home. These are supposed to solve the problem, but obviously they don't.
But I found that explicitly specifying the DNS routers will allow the machines to work. Yeeha!

" Hi. I just updated to 10.3.2 and now my dvds and cds won't eject properly--it takes forever for them to eject, computer hangs, I have to restart.
Also, when I click on a program in the dock it locates the program in the finder instead of opening it. I have a g4 dual 1.42 ghz with 1.5gb.... Before I installed it everything was wonderful.
Thanks, Val Z. "

I don't see this problem here on 3 macs with 10.3.2.

" Updating to Mac OS10.3.2 from Mac OS10.28, plus updating Protools to 6.22 has fixed a number of problems in both my Digio 001 and Digio 002.
My B&W G3, updated to a 550MHZ G4, saw a significent speed increase (Protools 6.01 really slowed it down). My 1 GHZ G4, connected to my Digio 002, now has an icon in the tool bar, and can allow other programs to use the audio out, handy for mastering in Peak 4.

Also Safari now works on my G3 - it didn't under OS 10.2.8
Both computers seem a bit snappier, however that should be expected with a new OS install. It did take a long time, after I installed OS 10.3, I used software update to install the 38 meg .2 update. All in all a great upgrade

" Hi Mike,
I've updated to 10.3.2 and it creates a problem.
I know many people will think it's a joke but since the update I can no more play to Duke Nukem 1.2 under classic (my favorite game).
In fact the game is running but "behind" the Duke startup screen:
you can hear sounds and there are display variations reflecting the progress of the game and that's all. (The display is not refreshed).

I think that the new graphic driver included in 10.3.2 are responsible and that the great famous OS9 classic compatibility is slowly ending...

Maybe it means that some other softwares running under classic and using the drivers like Duke will no more run too...
Of course, my Mac is unable to boot under OS9
G4 MDD/FW800/1GHZ/ 1GB Mem/OSX.3.2 US/QT 6.5 Pro
If it can help.
Regards, Robert R.
(It may not matter but I asked Robert what graphics card he was using.)
Oops, sorry it's a standard Geforce 4MX and of course I set it to 640x480 256 colors"

" Mike, Installed 10.3.2 about a week ago on a TiBook 1GHz, 512MB, and only had one hitch that I was surprised nobody else had reported. Installed okay, but on restart and after login, the computer hung right after the drives were mounted. Other users on this computer were fine.

Problem: I was running XBack and the Serene Screen Marine Aquarium as my desktop (and were also set to be loaded on startup). For some reason, Marine Aquarium causes my 10.3.2 to hang up and force a keyboard restart. ??? Oh, well, small cost.
--Alex "

Even apple notes that there can be problems with OS X updates if some 3rd party OS mods/addons are installed. (I generally avoid them - maybe that's why I don't have many of the problems others have reported). If in doubt (and the vendor's website has no info on compat. with the update) - removing it before updating may be best.

"A *very* small number of dual G5 users have encountered more severe problems than the "slow launching" that's been reported elsewhere. (My dual G5/2GHz system (OEM 512MB + 3GB of 3rd party RAM, 9800 OEM) has been fine w/10.3.2 so far. So are a PB G4 and MDD Dual G4 system - probably the only thing that's gone smoothly this month.-Mike) I was the first guinea pig into the abattoir this time (and don't plan to be ever again - wait a week before applying updates!) and started a few threads on the Apple forums... others with similar or identical problems include Brian B., Kenneth R., and Craig R., who pop up in the threads.

My particular machine is a G5 dual 2.0GHz with 512MB of Apple RAM and 1GB of third-party RAM (from 18004memory), dual 250GB SATA drives, bluetooth, airport, yadda. I've done numerous tests of the install and upgrade process - some at the behest of AppleCare - including such fun as taking everything non-Apple off the system (RAM, peripherals, even my beloved wheel mouse!) and dismounting the drive I wasn't installing to before every installation step! (They're thorough, those guys!)

I've also run the machine through Apple Hardware Test (basic and extended) with and without the extra RAM, and spent lots of time in Disk Utility. No matter what, applying 10.3.2 now relates in a messed-up system.

My case has actually been escalated to Apple engineering (never before has any problem of mine ever made it to the people who WRITE the operating system!) and I or others on the forums might still think of other things to try while they mull it over (and take a holiday break). :)

Obviously, 3-4 machines out of 300,000-500,000 machines sold is a VANISHINGLY small percentage known (to me) to have this particular problem. We've had to fall back to earlier versions to keep things stable.

"The installation of 10.3.2 went smoothly for me. Just after the installation, everything was working accordingly. However, eventually I found out the system chokes to the death. After a boot, the system works normally. Eventually, it seems that the system is stuck somewhere and won't comes back. That is, I can not really execute any new command. A finder is still functional as long as I don't launch anything. An only way out is to reset the machine.

By looking at the context, it seems to be related to network communication. Then, I moved my machine to another location. Now I do not have the choke to death problem any more. Obviously the two location has different network router. The first location uses D-Link internet router and the second location uses Airport Extreme Base Station. Maybe a IP routing mechanism may be something to do with this problem. Except this, my machine functions pretty smoothly, although I did not notice visible improvement from 10.3.1 yet.

I use PowerBook G4 1.25GHz FW 800 with no third party kernel extensions. The problem occurred with or without use of Airport wireless connection.

So far no networking (airport ext. base sharing cable modem) problems here with 3 machines running 10.3.2.

"I had a similar problem to the one that Matt P had: Opening System Preferences and one of the SP items causes SBBOD, immediately after the 10.3.2 update. At least we both know it happened to someone else .

I had already installed the G5 fireware 5.1.4 update. Repairing the disks or permissions didn't help any.

I then did a fresh, clean (nuke the HD) install of 10.3, then all the updates. No other software other than the OS. Same thing happened.

Just to further waste time, I nuked the HD again, installed 10.2.7. Upgraded to 10.3, did software updates to get to 10.3.2. Now that I notice it, I seem to have all or most of the problems Matt has. I did try all the "sudo" commands that Marc L suggested.

Think I'll install one more time and not do the 10.3.2 update. (grin)

Here is what extensis told me:

    " Greetings...
If Suitcase is stuck 'initializing' you have too many fonts active in your system. To clear these out, empty the Hard Drive: Library: Fonts folder as well as the Users: yourname: Library: Fonts, remove all fonts except the following 5 from your System Folder/Fonts, Charcoal, Chicago, Geneva, Monaco and New York (We not recommend modifying the System: Library: Fonts folder). Next search all local drives for the 'AdobeFnt' and trash all files you find. Then reboot your machine.

I've not added any new fonts or apps since running the 10.3.2 update so shouldn't suitcase function as before?

You'd think. If any other Suitcase users have seen this problem (or not) let me know. (don't use it personally)

Hey Mike,
I have a 12" 867 G4 powerbook and a DP 800 quicksilver
The quicksilver has a combo usb2/firewirecard, an adaptec 20160n scsi card (no drives attached yet) w/ the latest firmware and drivers, an Acard ata133 raid card (not the boot volume, that is stock) w/ two maxtor drives attached, the usb bus has two powered hubs, a wacom and a belkin Nostromo N50 pad attached. 1. GB of ram, Nvidia geforceTi 4600. Kensington optical trackerball, macally keyboard.

Both the powerbook and dp800 have only the desktop manager, menumeters and temperature utilities running in the BG, no real exotic haxies or anything... (I'd still check any 3rd party addons for 10.3.2 compat. - if in doubt - remove them before updating to eliminate them as a factor in any problems)

prior to 10.3.2, the powerbook would wake quickly from sleep and the fan would go off at temperatures higher than 140 F. The DP 800 would wake from sleep within 30 secs, I assume because of the added hardware. Over a year ago I had a problem with the DP 800 ever waking from sleep because of a driver issue with the acard raid card.

Now after 10.3.2, the powerbooks is the same but the fan goes off at 120 deg F. Waking from sleep is the same. The DP800 has problems waking from sleep....

1) If I put the DP800 in deep sleep, it wakes up OK
2) If it goes to mild sleep with no apps launched, say at the login screen, it wakes fine.
3) If it goes into mild sleep with apps launched (like Mail or Safari), the monitor wakes up, but the keyboard and mouse doesn't respond. They both still get power, the key caps light still toggle, Just no mouse on screen, no response to keyboard commands from computer. Only remedy is to induce a deep sleep prior to it going to mild sleep on its own, or to force a reboot after its frozen after a mild sleep..
I reset the Pram and no change.....
Does this sound familiar to anyone? thanks!!
Arthur A.
(He later wrote)
I only reset the Pram... the problem continues... then I "forgot" to put the computer to sleep and it went into a non-deep sleep mode.. .. the mode that causing me problems before... and the problem has ceased for now... I can wake up the system from non deep sleep as well as from deep sleep... I can;t exactly attribute it to resetting the pram directly as I've had to reboot from non-deep sleep several times to wake it before it just started to work again....
I'll keep you posted.... "

I asked if he had tried the usual voodoo (RP, disconnecting and reconnecting USB devices, etc. - see examples below)

"Hi Mike, ran 10.3 and 10.3.1 flawlessly on a PB 667 DVI, w 256MB. Ran 'repair permission', installed 10.3.2, ran RP again. No errors reported at any time.
Power-up to log-in screen was 20-30 secs slower, noticeably stalling when just before log-in appears. Finder then takes noticeably longer to appear. General performance after this seems normal, though graphics drivers seem to have improved window scrolling/dragging/re-sizing. My Wireless LAN / internet settings / DHCP then went loopy. Couldn't see network, then could but didn't get address, finally got address but DNS look-ups failed. Basically removed all settings, re-booted, re-inserted settings. Still no joy. Rinse repeat three times, finally works. Definite screwiness.

The slow-start was bugging me, tried re-boot, reset NVRAM, more repair permissions. No joy. Then installed the security update (with rumored 10.3.2 fixes) and ran (force pre-binding/re-binding):

    sudo update_prebinding -root / -force

as suggested by MacOSXHints.com. (see also earlier reader report with this tip and others from the terminal)
Et voila - system back to v useable, with no real delays.
In short can't say if it was the 'security update' or the forced pre-binding, All in all, it took a few days to bed in, but it seems to be there now.
Gary "

I used cocktail to do that since I had it handy (and clean caches, run maint. cron scripts, etc.) but really didn't see any change in delays, etc. (they were really not that noticeable on this PB G4 and no networking or other problems here w/10.3.2 on 3 macs.)

"Main Mac is G4 Power PC-800 mhz. None of these problems were evident in 10.31.

Problems since installing 10.32.
Epson 1270 starts to print but has communication problem with mac at 1st attempt to receive more of the print cache. Causes printer to stop. and if restart print job is chosen, the paper just ejects and the print cache go away.

Safari. Quits randomly every so often, about 5 times in the last two hours. When trying to access bookmarks, it takes 4 or 5 seconds for bookmarks to appear in drop down list.

Finder. There is a time delay when clicking icons. When I 1st click or right click any icon I see spinning beachball for 4 or 5 seconds. Then it either opens or screen appears with right click.

Canon Scan 2710. Will no longer scan through scsi port, even though the scanner is recognized. I use Vuescan and it sees scanner but hitting the scan button results is some scanner noise, but no actual loading of the slide for scanning.

Overall performance. It seems to take slightly longer to open applications.

All of these problems go away if I use my TI G4 PB with 10.3.1 still on it, so it looks like the problem are just related to the 10.3.2 upgrade. I have repaired permissions and done a forced file check, but no problems were noted. Also have run disk warrior, but nothing changed. I intend to reinstall and archive to 10.3 and see if this fixes these new problems.

In the past, sometimes OS X updates had USB problems that were helped by even simple things like disconnecting and reconnecting the device. I'd also try some of the terminal tips here also before doing that.

"Updated to 10.3.2 on a 15" TiBook (667 MHz) I have also encountered the problem of the screen flickering or "stuttering". It does seem to coincide with disk accessing at the point you can hear the slightly audible click of the hard drive. At worst, it can happen once every few minutes or even once a minute. At other times it doesn't happen at all. I haven't been able to force it to flicker with any tricks I know

Also, my internet sharing via airport no longer works correctly. Others are able to use my drop box or ichat through rendezvous, but any access to the LAN or beyond is not possible. No firewalls were ever enabled and yes, permissions were repaired.

"Some real strange stuff on the ibook 14inch 800mhz with 10.3.2 and a one-day old airport.

I am sure there is something nasty for my ibook in the 10.3.2 release. Getting kernal panics so often I can barely book (boot?). Getting black screen of death or garbage all over the screen. Kind of like interference, with or without the airport in, no other devices or mods from stock.

It is running now after unplugging the battery for a few hours, but only in safe mode. Even crashed while booting the panther install disks.

Battery update is only a few days old, and no new airport software was installed last night, but it is the video which is going nuts. I see static on the screen a few moments before kernal panic. Disk util, fsck, hardware test, etc do nothing. Even crashes in safe/verbose mode sometimes.

(one reader replied to this post saying in some cases this may be hardware related:

" Ibook mother boards are failing left and right. I had the video going nuts, garbage on screen, and kernel panics too. My iBook 700MHZ had to go back to Apple for mother board replacement. Fortunately it was free under warranty.

Anyone know how to rollback to 10.3.1 with old video drivers avoiding a complete clean?
Nick D. "

I asked if he had any 3rd party OS mods/haxies, etc. installed. (or the nvram patch/mod for dual display support) and if it was reliable if booted from CD. (i.e. boot from the 10.3 CD, exit the installer and run Disk Utility to repair the disk and run repair permissions.) It sounds so unstable booted from HD that I'd not want to suggest running the terminal tips noted by another reader here or running DU from the boot disk. Even resetting the NVRAM may be worth trying as a last resort.

"I have had an odd problem ever since upgrading to Panther, and I thought 10.3.2 would be the cure but sadly not. I'm writing to share my experience after reading about the individual with the Apple CRT monitor, ATI video card and the black screen problem. I have a off-brand LCD (KOGi L7EH) 17in monitor that I bought on sale at CompUSA. It's an OK monitor and Jaguar recognized it right off and played well with it.

Panther has been a different story. I have problems with some full-screen games (Finding Nemo and Neverwinter Nights Demo, to name two) that won't display video. Other full-screen games will work and sometimes even those will get screwed up and display at full-screen resolution in a corner of the screen.

I am using an ATI 7000 PCI video card in a B&W G3 with an OWC 550Mhz G4 upgrade. I expected the new drivers in 10.3.2 would fix these problems, but no such luck. When I start one of the offending games my screen goes black and it says "Out of Range- H-53.8Khz V- 85.2Hz" The monitor is set to 60Hz for resolution and 85Hz is out of its capabilities. I've tried it at other resolutions but no love there either.

I haven't found a solution to my problem so I'm sorry I can't share a tip, but I thought I'd pass along another odd video issue with Panther and the 10.3.2 update. Here's the profiler readout of my video (note that it says my monitor is a CRT when it's really an LCD!)

    ATY,RV100:
    Type: display
    Bus: PCI
    Slot: J12
    VRAM (Total): 32 MB

    Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-85501-208 (latest I think)

    Display:

    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes

    ATY,RV100ad_B:
    Status: No display connected

Thanks for a great site and happy holidays!
Rob E.
(he later wrote he was using the VGA port and sent more comments)
The profiler report listing the monitor as a CRT really burns my bacon. I queried folks on the Apple discussion boards and a number of Panther users have an incorrect listing. I don't know if that is the basis for my problems or what. I don't know where that information is stored or if it is possible to change it.
Funny thing is, in my displays menu, it lists my monitor by model- L7EH, so it most be getting some feedback from the monitor.

I've tried fooling around with config files for the games. I can get Finding Nemo to run in windowed mode, but have had no luck with Neverwinter Nights. I'm not too sure of myself with these Unix files!

I've run repair permissions and prebinding on multiple times. I'm always suprised at how many permissions are wrong each time.
I have the 2.08 firmware in the Radeon and it works just fine (most or the time.) I do get that weird shadow under the desktop icon text when I fiddle with the resolution or force-quit a game that won't run.

I have other full-screen games that work fine and I never have a problem with full-screen in the iTunes visualizer (my frame rate fluctuates between 13 and 46fps- weird!) Just with a select few. Of course, the first problem after the Panther upgrade was that Bejeweled would crash when trying to go into full screen. That's my wifes favorite game and boy was she mad!

I've run all the ATi recommended updates and bug fixes to no avail, but thanks for the suggestion. (Note - do not install older ati retail card driver updates in 10.3.x - they were posted for older OS X versions and drivers were made to use older OpenGL versions-Mike)
It continues to be a head-scratcher for me. "

"Hi Mike, I just updated my iBook 800 from 10.3.1 to 10.3.2. Due to reasons beyond my comprehension, an authorized Apple service center installed a UNSUPPORTED Sony CRX-810E combo drive in my iBook when the original one went south. Since then I've been using hacks to enable burning in iTunes and Finder in Jaguar and Panther.

In 10.3.1, after I replaced the whole DiscRecording framework (with modified profile), the Sony drive appeared as "Apple Supported" in System Profile and was recognized by both iTunes and Finder. "Ext LaCie HD firewire 800 & Canon DV cam can't be used together

Since the 10.3.2 update, my LaCie 250Gb Firwire 800 drive and my Canon DV cam can't be conected at the same time to my G5 dual 2Ghz. Final Cut 4 won't recognize there is a camera present when plugged into the front/back firewire soccet. The ext HD cannot be 'ejected' and the system can't be shut down whlie the camera is connected (it just freezes, until I disconnect the camcoder firewire cable). I tried with another camera but then the problems are the same.

With the HD detached from either the firewire 400 or 880 port and plugged into the USB 2.0 socket, eveything works fine. Very dissapointing, because the firewire 800 socket was one the reason I bought the G5 for all of my video-editing...

"Mike, I had several problems with the 10.3.2 update. The first was with IP Printers. I was unable to connect to a printer on the same subnet and on the public side of the firewall. This happened on a PB G4 and a Dual 2G G5.

The second issue was with the G5 causing the ADC 15" LCD Monitor to "auto trigger" the brightness button every 2 minutes or so in the Finder. I did the normal routine (zapped PRAM, permissions, and HD check) to no avail.

The third issue was getting a kernel panic when printing. These happened at the most inconvenient times of course.

I solved all problems by killing the Finder and Printer prefs in the system and local preferences folder. If people are having problems with any apps, they might want to move the preferences file out and see if that fixes the problem before doing more drastic fixes like reinstalling Panther.

I would definitely say that staying away from this update and wait for 10.3.3 would be advised.

and using a raid set up having to always use terminal just to get my raid to show up.. ahhhhhhh .. too many head aches.. i had no problems with 10.3.0 the first state which im feeling is the only safe state. and updates, sounds like Bill Gates is typing the codes for them.. well I'm not happy and if i say this way maybe I should ask apple for my first refund....

"I own a Pismo Powerbook upgraded to G4 by Powerlogix.
It has run impeccably under OS 10.2.8 for some months.

I have a 40 GB hard disk and one GB of ram. The hard disk is partitioned onto:
5 MB OS X
5 MB OS 9.2.2
10 MB Tools
20 MB Work area

The OS 10.3 installer complained that it did not have enough free space to do an Archive and Upgrade, so I had to remove a few applications and deselect some items from the install list (printers) in order to get the installer to agree to do the update. I took care to prebind the resulting system, reset all the permissions, use TechTool pro to check the directory and to defragment the partition before doing anything. I had a modest but comfortable margin of 50 Mb or so when I attempted the install. I even uninstalled the few Haxies I had in place to make sure they would not disrupt the upgrade.

After going through the whole drill of checking everything, archiving the old settings and installing most of the upgrade, the installer announced it had a problem and left me no choice but to restart. There was no detail to the error message nor any way to back out. The resulting partition was unusable. I tried a reinstall to find out that the Archive and Upgrade option would no longer allow me to preserve the old settings. That failed the first time but succeeded the second time.

Once I got to where I could boot, I picked up the pieces as best I could from the archived files folder and managed to recover my mail and preferences for several applications, although it is not clear I got everything back in the right place.

The final result was a version of OS 10.3 in a partition with a number of other applications that runs just as fast as 10.2.8, but not a lot faster.

And I now don't entirely trust the OS, which is a shame as I had just made piece with OS X in the last 6 months.

The right option now would be to back up and do a fresh install, including reinstalling my Apps, but that would take longer than I'd prefer to expend right now.

The moral of the story is make sure you have LOTS of free disk space before you go to install the new OS.
And be sure you have a complete backup available if you want any kind of recourse in case the installer fails.

My Mac is a G4 450 MHz AGP with 1 GB of RAM and Cendyne (Pioneer actually) DVR-105. These all worked fine in 10.2.x. The NVIDIA GeForce4MX 64MB video card was pulled from another Mac (I was told a Quicksilver) and purchased on eBay. This required OWC's fix. Hi, I just upgraded my new 20" iMac to 10.3.2 and haven't noticed any major problems yet. With both the upgrade to 10.3.2 and the security plus upgrade I promptly repaired permissions and ran TinkerTool System to perform the regular maintenance routines.
The keyboard and Mail seem fine and I haven't noticed anything during boot up (but wasn't really looking). The only possible problems being that iTunes has developed a nasty habit of losing it's connection to the Internet (streaming radio stations) and sometimes the Finder does little weird things (menus that refuse to pull down). I had been hoping that the upgraded drivers would fix the iMac's annoying habit of sending up a few distorted horizontal lines across the screen during games and on the screen saver (flurry), but no such luck.
I have seen this on all iMacs (15", 17" and now the 20") and would love to know how to fix this. Anyone else have this problem and know what to do to make it go away? No other significant problems or improvements noticed.

"Mike, 10.3.2 seems to have messed up my airport internet sharing (software base station) on my G5 dual.

I upgraded my wife's Aluminum PB G4 15in to 10.3.2 with no problems (so far). I had delayed installing Panther on my dual G5 as I was doing some video work and did not want any hassles. Since the PB was working fine I went ahead and upgraded 10.2.7 to Panther. After checking firewire drives and some software (no problems) I went ahead with the 10.3.2 upgrade as well as iTunes, and some others. Everything seemed fine so I continued with the Quicktime 6.5 and Security Patch upgrade.

Upon reboot I got a blank screen and my fans started to take off. (w/o the OS running the fans run at high speed/fail-safe mode as they do during HW test CD and FW target disk mode) Pushing the boot button did nothing so after the fans got really loud I pulled the power cord and rebooted. (I had this happen once before in 10.2.7 while working in Photoshop under OS9 got the spinning pinwheel and unable to access force quit. Found that the only solution was to power down. No ill effects except for lost changes in the working file)

Anyway, everything is back to normal except when I restarted serving internet via airport. My pismo (G3 500 still on OS9.2 with original airport card) saw the signal and connected to the G5 airport base station but came up with status "not available" I next tried my wife's PB15 (1g G4 OS10.3.2). Again it said it was connected to the G5 software base station, proper IP and router addresses but no internet. I next tried to have the PB15 serve the internet connection with same results. But when I used my Pismo software base station the others could connect with no problem. I did not test the airport internet service with the original 10.3 Panther so don't know if the problem related to Panther or 10.3.2. But my wife did have some problems connecting via airport initially after upgrading to Panther (G5 OS10.2.7 sharing). It wasn't much of an issue since she uses ethernet primarily and when I tried it I got it to work.

Anyone else ran into this airport internet sharing problem?

It appears that there is something wrong with the system preferences. If I try to click on the Fast User Switching menu, it gives me a spinning beach ball. The same happens if I mouse over the date and time or even open up System Preferences. I can't log out. I can't open the CD drive. My login items don't start up. I can run applications, but I can't bring up the Force Quit dialog box. If I go into terminal and run top, it shows that there are three processes that are stuck, but I can't tell which they are.

So, I call up Apple to try and get this fixed. We try a few things. He has me restart with a safe boot, and everything works just fine. Restart normally and the problems are there. So the guy has me do an archive install. This works just fine, so I redo the patch. The exact same thing happens. Now, they're telling me that it must be a third-party conflict and the only way to fix it is to completely wipe the drive and start over, reinstalling each third party app that I've got until the problem happens again, thus indicating which app is responsible. I wish I had a tip or a solution, but I don't. This the first report I've seen that duplicates a problem I've been having. It's not limited to AOL, but appears fairly frequently when accessing any web site. Upon attempting to navigate somewhere, Safari slows down as if it's not receiving anything from the site. It never comes back. Attempting to launch any other application just causes it to bounce in the dock. You can't even pull down Finder menus.

I didn't experience this under 10.3.1, but suffered numerous kernel panics, so I grabbed 10.3.2 quickly. Now this. I've done a clean install, including a completely wiped disk. I've installed no programs other than what's on the Panther CDs and the Apple automatic upgrade. Having heard things about DRAM issues, I pulled the RAM and tried it one chip at a time. Got the problem each time. Hardware diagnostics reveal nothing. I finally partitioned my drive 2 ways. I installed Jaguar on one partition and Panther on the other. I applied all upgrades to both. Jaguar works fine and Panther keeps hanging.

FWIW, I'm driving a DP-800 (Quicksilver) with 1.5 Gig of RAM. Needless to say, I'm staying in Jaguar for the time being.

A short session with the Terminal showed that the owner and group of several items (including .Trash) had been changed to root unknown instead of (in my case) hpr hpr . . . sudo chown made short work of that and lo and behold everything works again as it should (BTW running repair permissions from the disk utility did NOT fix this problem . . . apparently it looks ONLY to system items and leaves everything in you users folder alone (even if it is nominally a system item such as the trash. The above sped up my system - the prebinding is what normally is being done when installers show "optimizing system". The other commands launch disk maintenance routines that would run if your computer is running 7/24, but can be manually done if it is not. All this stuff can be done via shareware programs like cocktail, but I'm cheap, so I just do it myself.

"Yep. I had problems installing 10.3.2. The installer would refuse to install the update after a certain point. I tried severaI times. I login as an administrator normally. I created a new, plain vanilla user, downloaded all the updates and installed them with no problems. Logged out, then logged in as per normal. The first time the boot was a little slow, and Keychain asked me if I wanted to update all keychains to the new version. I answered, "yes.".

After that things seem to work pretty normal. Turn on boot process is about the same time as it was with 10.3.1. Stability seems normally excellent.

ADC 17in CRT User Notes Improved Support:

(added Dec. 22, 2003)
"Hi Mike, I have a 17in Apple "Clearback" CRT that I still really like. (ADC CRT display, the one discontinued a couple of years ago. -Mike) Unfortunately, the ADC connector means upgrade choices for the graphics card are limited. (the adapters only work with digital flat panels) (The CRT ADC display draws a LOT of 28V power, literally the max possible to source from the Tower Power Supplies and more than the usual DVI-ADC adapters source-Mike)
When the retail Radeon 9000 Pro was released with ADC port, I bought it as soon as I could find one. I've been quite happy with it, but it had an annoying bug where it wouldn't sense the available resolutions right, resulting in a black screen when starting a game for the first time or when playing iTunes' visualizer fullscreen etc. I'd become pretty adapt at manually editing config files so at least games would work, but it was very annoying non the less. I had emailed ATi but never heard back from them. (This issue was commented on in the forums here in the past. ATI has a tech doc on the issue also - linked in the FAQ here.-Mike)

I'm very pleased to say that this latest 10.3.2 update finally fixes all problems. The display pref pane only lists one frequency per supported resolution now and I haven't been able to produce a black screen from any of the apps that caused trouble before. Better late than never, I guess :)

One important thing to keep in mind is that (with anything - not just software and computers) - you're more than 10x more likely to hear about problems than from those that have none. That's just human nature.

(I asked if all OpenGL games refused to run or just MOHAA. If all, then I asked he check that opengl was installed. Odd I know but after one report that it wasn't I'm just curious. If just MOHA is a problem, (assuming it's up to date) - trashing the MOAHH config file would be worth trying if all else seems ok (drivers/GL, etc.). -Mike)
I believe that OpenGl is installed because it does not give me the same errors that I got when I ran MOHAA on my 9600. Those errors occurred whenever I did not have OpenGL installed or an OpenGL compatible graphics card. The G5 just stops loading the game when the screen goes orange, and just stays that way. iChat will bounce and then act like it loaded in the dock, but nothing come up. When I try to go to the apple menu, it just locks up, and I cannot force quit. I just have to turn off my computer. After all of this I've given up and done an archive install of Panther for the third time. I'm not going to do any of the updates until Apple figures it out. "

I wish I had the answer for everyone's problems though, or could repeat most of them on my systems so I know it's a common issue.
On the G5 here w/10.3.2 (9800 Pro, all updates applied incl 5.1.4 firmware) MOHAA launches fine (quick saved game test OK) and I haven't seen any real problems so far with 10.3.2 on that system but I've not done any real long-term game playing on it recently.

Hi Mike, After reinstalling Panther and updating my system with all updates since its release (not the 10.3.2 update obviously) the freezes are now gone. Altough it may not always be a factor, if -any- problems happen when OC'ing a CPU, back off to the stock speeds just to rule that out of the equation. (And it can sometimes cause intermittent corruption which can lead to problems in the first place.) I used to think Expose required Q.E. but it doesn't (verified by readers w/o Q.E. enabled cards) - fast user swiching effect requires Q.E. I think.

I updated, rebooted then I get a finder hang. It just freezes, you can't pull down "about this mac" or load anything in sys preferences... the eject key didn't work either. Some apps did work however (CCC).

I though ok well something got screwed up. carbon copy cloned my system then applied a fresh install on stock hardware. Applied the update and same thing happened. I took it back to the apple store yesterday. I'm really bummed out. This is my 2nd mac and this is the second time i've had a major problem with an update. (first time was with my dual 867... firewire ports stopped working with 10.2.8) The weird thing is that it worked fine without the newest update applied. I installed the 10.3.2 update on a dual G5 here (which also had the 5.1.4 firmware update applied) and it seems ok. (Applied all the other updates to date also - had some odd permissions repairs though but otherwise seems ok).
But I know the feeling about QC - the last 4 macs I've bought all have needed some sort of repair (and even a brand new PB G4 17in has a strange/loud fan noise when it kicks on high speed - like the blades are literally rubbing something. Scared off a buyer. What is it about Apple and fans - they do beautiful designs, and fall down on a $10 fan, Which reflects very poorly on the system to the end user.)
Yet some older Mac models have run 24/7 for 3+ years, and my 1998 PB G3 wallstreet is still running (although the PCcard slots went south).

" Hey Mike I just got a new Apple Dual 1.25GHz G4 (512MB/80GB/Superdrive/GeForce 4 Ti) over a week ago. It came with Panther 10.3 installed and I upgraded to 10.3.1 without any issue. It would boot in less than 20 seconds from being off and reboots were about 15 seconds. Also it never seemed to run louder than my old BWG3 (although I've only had this Dualie for about 11 days).

So the other day I upgraded to 10.3.2 and after reboot the first thing I noticed was the Fans coming on high speed. I thought the computer was about to takeoff into space. also the boot took over a full minute to come up. It was really weird almost as instead of the slick Quartz Eztreme power I got used to seems as if it has been reduced or removed. The New Dual has a nVidia GeForce 4 Ti 128MB and under 9.2.2 and 10.3.1 it is a kicking fast video card.

Also some finder weirdness that is very annoying, every time I've had to reboot the HD icons keep moving further down the screen. then when I open the main HD and view all my very organized alphabetized List view is back to some messed up Icon view using the smallest icon size.

Only good thing is Now my HP deskjet 960C printer prints documents in sequential order, Last page first through First page last. It never worked before.

Not sure if its just 10.3.2 problems as I also installed other updates QT 6.5, iTunes 4.2, DVD Studio Pro 2.0.3, and Soundtrack 1.1

This is especially annoying because I have never been able to get my PC to log on to any of my Macs using Windows file sharing. Now I can't get my machines to talk to each other anymore.
Maybe there is some system setting that I'm missing, I'm just finding that transferring files by Zip disk to be much less efficient than the file sharing that was working a few hours ago.
Ho hum, some people probably figure it serves me right for mixing Apples and Oranges. I do cross platform development, so I have to.
Andrew K. "

Update: here's two reader suggestions for Andrew (he may have done this already but posting just in case):

"hit the apple key plus the K key and enter the ip address of your file server in the connect to server box. If file sharing for macs is turned on on your pc this should give you a log in. (this command is also under the finders go menu). If you don't have a password you should be able to just press ok and connect once the pc is set up for macs. It works for me but I am no guru and I did want to have it password protected but never got it to work. Also you have to make all drives shareable individually for you to get them to be seen by the mac or only the shared folders on the route drive show up for the mac.
hope this helps, shawn"

And another reply:

"This may have been tried already, but I found cross platform sharing very difficult until I made sure that all machines trying to share belonged to the same workgroup. You configure that by using the Directory Access utility in the Utilities folder. Also, I make sure that the short name on both machines for my login is the same with the same password. Now it works great both ways.

" Hi Mike. We have run into an interesting problem after upgrading to 10.3.2. We are running a DualG4 gigahertz ethernet box with 512Megs of RAM and 10.3.2 and all the other recent updates released by Apple today. Firewall is turned on with only the iChat ports activated. We are using Earthlink DSL with a direct connection between the DSL router and the computer.

When accessing www.aol.com using Safari, we are able to login and get the user page. Prior to 10.3.2, my wife claims she was able to access AOL.mail with no problems. Since upgrading to 10.3.2, we can get to the user page on AOL.com (we have tried two different accounts) but when we attempt to reach AOL.mail Safari hangs and eventually the whole system stops (usually within 2 minutes). What is really odd is that the option/command/escape sequence does not work. When we attempt to click another application in the Dock, it will not launch and the individual icon keeps bouncing with no black triangle underneath it. Attempting to launch another application always hastens the freezing of the system. The only recovery is to hit the reset button or shutdown using the Power On button on the front of the case.

I have been able to reproduce this problem under two different user logins. We have run repair permissions on the main drive several times. We have not tried the terminal command window sequence to run the repair program. As far as I can determine, the OS and Safari work fine with other sites. If this problem is real, I assume AOL.com is trying to do something that is causing the system to fail. What is odd is how the entire system just essentially stops.
Any ideas of what might be happening here.

" Hi xlr8yourmac.com,
Here's a bug report I've submitted to Apple at devbugs@apple.com:

I believe the 10.3.2 updater has severe flaws in it. (maybe it's just me?)

After applying the update, launch Safari and enter a URL for a "slow loading" page...e.g. www.info.apple.com. Before the page has fully loaded, open another application from the Dock, e.g. Mail. Both Safari and Mail will basically grind the system to a halt and no new applications can launch...spinning beachballs etc. Sometimes it'll take a while for this bug to surface.

This problem did not exist prior to this update. My system is a Quicksilver Dual 1 Ghz G4 with a "fresh" installation of Panther.

I've also moved the 10.3.2 package out of the /library/receipts directory and tried the standalone updater. The same problem occurs.
I've also confirmed this problem on a dual 867 mirrored drive door mac.

the tricky thing here is, I installed 10.3.2 seed 7d15 and it fixed my problem (probably open GL and quartz extreme issues.)
so anyway, I used the downgrader and installed 7d24 (the final version?), and the drivers seemed to have been updated back to a not-working status...
so 10.3.2 7d15 fixed my ati drivers and 7d24 reverted them back to make my expose freeze. luckily, i posted the 7d15 drivers on some of my webspace, originally to share with others, but now it allowed me to put them back into my system extensions folder. after putting the7d15 ATIRadeon8500.kext, ATIRadeon8500GLDriver.bundle and many other files back in, I fixed permissions and restarted... problem solved naturally.

" I am attaching text files of output from two Xbench tests - one from a few days ago under 10.3.1 and another from just now with 10.3.2.

Overall Score summary:

  • 10.3.1:   59.93
  • 10.3.2 :   78.30

I thought to do this after a MacBidouille news post suggested a 5% improvement on a G5 system. (XBench like many OS X pure benchmarks shows some variation from run/run (even with no changes to the system/software) - some have seen large differences at times on some tests, but I've not had time to run repeated tests (avg of say 10 runs) with Xbench and have already updated my G5 and PB G4-Mike)

I am using an off-the-shelf-configuration of Powerbook G4 (867 MHz).
The Xbench test run was the default setting, and I likely was in a somewhat similar operating configuration, but not the same. (e.g., was connected to a high-speed internet line with Entourage running in the background for the 10.3.2 test). (Best to run tests w/o any other apps running and after a clean reboot if possible to try and have as consistent a system state as possible)
I am anxious to try this on my B&W G3 that I just upgraded at home.
Also just ran Altivec Fractal Carbon on this same PB G4.

I suppose a simple Panther reinstall will fix it but in the future, I'll have to remember to let the os update itself instead of starting a heavy render while it's busy prebinding. Serves me right.

For currently made Mac PCI cards (retail) with OS X drivers - the only one I know of is the ATI Radeon 7000 PCI.

" Sawtooth/GeForce Issue Remains
Hi,
I just installed 10.3.2 on my Sawtooth/400 with a flashed GeForce2MX card. Everything runs fine with 256mb but it's still the black screen of death with any additional ram installed. I haven't tried playing with the extensions or anything, but it looks like this bug is still out there.
Keep up the great work - thanks!
Doug

Interesting... I'm using a Sawtooth/400 with an ASUS V7100 Pro GeForce2 MX flashed with the "ASUS V7100 ROM" found at http://www.cybercoment.com/macgeforce.htm.
I see on slashdot that someone with a twinview version of the card got it to work, but it won't go for me. Maybe they disabled QE? Maybe it just works.
One other thing to try is to flash the PRAM, but I'm not holding out much hope...
Cheers,
Doug"

Since it fixed the GF4MX issue, it was hoped it would also for any 2MX owner problems in older G4 towers. (OEM GF2MX card runs fine in a Cube here even under 10.3.0.)

" Received my copy of Halo this afternoon. I was disappointed that FSAA caused large scale pixel distortion of the intro and the game itself.
WITH 10.3.2 applied, and FSAA 2X applied; the problem was corrected. I haven't tried higher settings yet (I got wrapped up in the game-and now 'm pooped!).
G5, 9800 OEM, 4GIG RAM.
Have a great Holiday to you and yours!

" I just want to give an update on my 10.3.2 install problems. I ran disk warrior 3.0 on the hard drive to make sure the drive was ok. Disk Warrior found some problems including Item, File, and Folder count problems. I repaired the drive and it booted up successfully on the next restart. I am not sure whether the update caused the problems or it was just a coincidence that this happened, but it seems to be working fine now.

" Good news Mike. This update fixes the problem with old ATI Xclaim cards.

(I asked for his mac model details and what specific Xclaim card he had)

" I'm using a powerbook g4 1Ghz (titanium) and use uControl since steve doesn't think we need more than one mouse button on a laptop...
Anyway, after upgrading to 10.3.2 uControl v1.3.7 won't load. I downloaded v1.4 but it refuses to install. Hopefully this gets fixed soon....

" Applied it to a 1.33 GHz, Al Pb 17in 1GB RAM, updating from 10.3.1.
Installed and booted no problem. Ran Verify Disk Permission and it didn't report any problems
I did notice that 'browsing' for network volumes now results in the mounted network volumes also showing up on the desktop.
