Review of Formac's 12/10/32 Firewire CDRW Drive:
I've posted a review of Formac's 12/10/32 Firewire CDRW drive. I didn't have another 12/10/32 drive to use, so I compared performance to my Sony 10/4/32 Firewire drive on several Macs. Toast 4.12, iTunes, Disc Burner, and Audio Extraction tests were run. On the G4 tower, I ran tests with the Formac drive powered only from the firewire port. The review includes photos of the drive and notes on bus power requirements.

Heavy Metal Fakk 2 Beta for OS X Tip:
A reader sent a tip for using the Demo version of Fakk2 with Omni's OS X Fakk2 beta released today

" If you download the FAKK2 for X from Omni, it will run fine (slightly garbled graphics at the menu and no Julie voice as you mouseover) up until you try to hit new game, but it won't start a new game. If you hit tilde to bring down the console and type "map fakkhouse_demo", it loads up the demo and from my 10 minutes of testing (complete with switching between levels and quite a few cutscenes), plays just fine!
HTH,
Rufo
(he later wrote)

BTW, I just realized that you have to go into the advanced options and turn on the console to get to it. Apologies for not realizing that sooner, but I didn't realize you had to do that (I did it under the OS 9 version a long time ago). "

The Omnigroup OS X Fakk2 download page for more info and known bugs in the beta2 release. (Requires Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2 for Mac OS 9)

Airport Scanner Utility:
" Mike,.. Type XI is happy to announce the immediate availability of AP Scanner, a made with REALbasic application that allows AirPort 1.3 users to graphically view all wireless access points within range. AP Scanner shows each access point's channel and graphically displays potential channel interference.

Reader Comments on SETI for OS X:
In yesterday's news there was a note on the first release of SETI for OS X ( http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/macosx.html). Some readers have tried it and sent their comments. Most note slower performance with the first OS X release, but one reader sent a note he's running the unix command line version with much improved speed. Details

OS X Audio Fix for Beige G3 with DVD Option:
Last October I posted James' comments on this issue in the beta (It's still in the FAQ's OS X beta section). He sent an update regarding OS X 10.0:

"There's a problem in MacOS X 10.0 that prevents sound from working on beige G3s that shipped with a DVD drive, or more specifically that have a "DVD-Video and Audio/Video" card. The root of the trouble is that the AppleBurgundyAudio kernel extension checks against the wrong value in the IOKit registry, and thus fails to load. I created a replacement driver for the Public Beta, but have been unable to do so for 10.0 because Apple hasn't released up-to-date driver code to the public yet. Instead, I have managed to figure out a hack that enables sound under 10.0, the details of which can be found at http://homepage.mac.com/james_chalfant . Recognize that this is hack, not a clean solution such as a replacement kernel extension, since the latter will be impossible until Apple releases the code.

The upshot is that if you want to enable sound on a Beige G3 that came from the factory with a DVD drive, go to http://homepage.mac.com/james_chalfant and follow the directions. I thought perhaps some of your readers may have experienced the same problem, and would be interested to know of a solution.
Thanks,
-James Chalfant"

CDRW/CD/DVD/HD Compatibility Database Updates:
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 11 new entries added this morning including CDROMs, DVD-ROMs, Combo DVD-CDRW, CDRW, and Hard Drives. Current total 3,501 reports. Entries from after midnight are added the following day. [BTW - the drive database is not a place to post questions, it's for reports on drives you've used. For guides to drive installs, see the IDE, SCI or Firewire articles linked above and/or the FAQ. If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database.
