| Impressive 3 Speaker Sound for $50: |
| I'm no audio expert, but I have to admit I am impressed with the overall sound of the Labtec Pulse 424 Speakers which retail for $49.99. (I bought mine at Staples here in VA.) I had read a good review of them in Maximum PC recently and was very surprised at the audio quality (especially the subwoofer) for such a cheap set of speakers. The Pulse 424 includes an 8" subwoofer (wood enclosure) with separate adjustable subwoofer volume control and two small plastic satellite speakers. There's a headphone jack on the satellite speaker also, which is handy. I didn't expect a $50 speaker set to sound this good. If you'd like to add a cheap set of speakers for your Mac give these a look. I'd love to have a set of the $250 Klipsch Promedia 4.1's, but for $50, the Pulse 424's are a great value in my opinion. |

| Reader Comments on Beige G3 w/DVD OS X Audio Fix: |
| A reader commented on the patch noted in yesterday's news:
"After reading through the article written James Chalfant
(http://homepage.mac.com/james_chalfant. I realized that all the fix is
was a simple replacement of a file in an invisible directory. First I
used Apple's Sherlock while 9.1 to find exactly where the rc file was at
(exact path: HD/Private/etc/rc). I used Norton Disk Doctor's Get Info
For function to make the "private" folder temporarily visible. After
locating the rc file, I renamed rc.old. Next, I went to the Apple
iTools homepage and mounted james-chalfant public folder. From that I
retrieved the replacement rc file & placed it in the proper directory
path. I went back to Norton and made the "Private" folder invisible
again. I then used the Startup Disk control panel to select my Mac OS X
system folder and restarted. Sound works beautifully now. I did try
the long way but was denied access in the TERMINAL app in Mac OS X.
Even after I used the root account. Also, I have tried the save as
option of the rc file from the web browser but that did not work out too
well. After consulting File Buddy's compare two files function, I
discovered that the web browser has added a resource fork to the rc text
file. That did cause OS X to boot into a terminal screen: no desk top
just white command lines on a black screen. That's why I went with
James' copy from his iTools "public" folder. Thank you James and thank
YOU xlr8yormac.com for posting the fix. :)

| Warranty Repairs - Does Your Credit Card Extend Warranties? |
| Reader Steve Weisel sent a reminder on something I know I always forget - that many credit card companies may extend the warranty of products bought with the card. His PowerBook Firewire warranty recently expired before he remembered to report a problem with the AC adapter and screen. Luckily he noted that his CC company had the extended warranty program:
"I called Visa, and they're sending me a claim form. They pay 100% of
repair for an extra year over mfr. warranty....
Steve"
If in doubt, check with your credit card company on their warranty policies (if they provide this service). Just a FYI as I know I had forgotten about this benefit of many cards, which in some cases could save you a bundle.
