| OS X 4L5/4L7 Users - How to Get the Official 10.0.1 Update: |
| I had avoided applying the 'unofficial' 4L5/4L7 updates noted last week, but reader reports note those that did apply them can't get the 10.0.1 update. A reader sent a tip on how to get the "official" 10.0.1 (4L13) update if you applied the earlier ones.
"Mike,
Readers like myself who installed the "unofficial" builds of OS 10.0.1
will find that they are unable to find the latest build (4L13) in the
software update panel.
To work around this simply delete the
10.0.1Update.pkg in the /Library/Receipts folder. Run the software
update panel again and you should find that it now locates the new
version of OS X.

| OS X Epson Printer Driver Update 1.1: |
On a whim I ran Software Update again after restarting using the 10.0.1 update. An "Epson 1.1. Printer Driver Update" was listed. (Apple's OS X 10.0.1 comments noted below mentioned an Epson Japanese printer update, but I'm using OS X English.) Applied it and restarted, but still no support for my Epson Photo 870 Printer.

| OS X 10.0.1 (4L13) Update Fixes Nomad II iTunes Support: |
I was finally able to get the OS X 10.0.1 update after several attempts. As a reader noted earlier (see below), I ran Software Updates twice - the 2nd time I noticed it prompted for a restart and also did an optimize after the update. The good news is that my Nomad II MP3 player is now recognized in OS X iTunes under 10.0.1 (Build 4L13). Still no support for my Epson Photo 870 printer however. Apple's OS X page notes that 10.0.1 features:
"
Improvements include better support for third party USB devices, Classic compatibility and overall application stability as well as support for the popular Secure Shell service. For Japanese users, an update to the Epson printer drivers is also available.
"
See above for tips on how to get 10.0.1 to install if you applied either the 4L5 or 4L7 "unofficial" updates. |

| OS X 10.0.1 (4L13) Update Available: |
"Hi Mike, ...Just checked (4:45 p.m.
Friday) via software update system prefs, and low and behold, there's
an update. Had been checking for days.
Downloading now in the background.
something a bit odd, I've run the system update twice. The first
time I didn't catch the name of the software, it may have been
updating the syster updater -- but i'm not entirely sure. For the
heck of it, I ran it a second time, and then it showed I 10.0.1 was
available. It's only on the second time that the name "10.0.1
update" clearly showed; I also got a warning that it will require a
restart. i'm sure you'll run it yourself before posting.
e."
I was finally able to connect and get the update. See the above news items for tips and more info on the update.

I bought two of the OWC 512MB 222 dimms for my dual G4/500 last fall when they were about $460 each. (A good price at that time.) They "survived" the G4 firmware update intact also. I've heard OWC bought the majority of the remaining stock of Newer's upgrades. |

| Quicktime 5 Preview 3 Expires Soon: |
(Updates: One reader said he ran the updater from the QT 5 player and it updated to version B19. I just tried this here on my QT 5 preview 3 Player (get info shows 5.b11 player version) and it reported all software was up to date. Two other readers also wrote to say the expiration date may actually be the end of April. I've not set my date ahead to the 16th and rebooted to test this however.) Several readers wrote with a reminder that QT 5 Preview 3 expires on the 15th. As of noon eastern time here, the Quicktime 5 preview page doesn't have an updated version, but it may appear there soon. Quicktime 5 showed much faster iMovie export performance in my tests here from last October with G4 towers and in recent tests with the XLR8 dual G4/500. I hope the update is released before the expiration to avoid having to revert back to QT 4.x.

| More Comments on Credit Card Extended Warranties |
| Yesterday's news had a reminder that some credit cards may extend the warranty on products bought with them (check with your card company for details). Steve Weisel wrote that his Pismo's 1 year warranty had expired recently but that his AC adapter and screen issues may be covered by his CC's extended warranty feature. (He said they were sending him a claim form.) There are often conditions and limitations however as some readers noted below.
"
Mike,
Just a caveat with regard to the credit card extended warranty: Be aware
going in that many (most?) of these policies expressly exclude refurbished
products or any non-manufacturer warranties. Read the fine print. This would
mean they will not extend the warranty on Apple's 90-day coverage for
refurbs. It also means that items sold without manufacturer coverage but
with a reseller warranty (CompUSA 'protection plan') will not be extended.
Charlie
"
"
Most companies that offer this only double the manufacturer's warrantee if it
is less than one year in length. If you buy something with a 3 year
warrantee you only get three years even with cards that offer extended
warrantee coverage.
Mike
"
Check with your credit card company to see if they provide this service, and for their specific terms and conditions if they do.

| CDRW/CD/DVD/HD Compatibility Database Updates: |
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 9 new entries added this morning including DVD-R (Pioneer DVR-103), CDROMs, DVD-ROMs, Combo DVD-CDRW, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables. Current total 3,533 reports. [BTW - the drive database is not a place to post questions, it's for reports on drives you've used. For guides to drive installs, see the IDE, SCI or Firewire articles linked above and/or the FAQ. If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database.
