Initio Miles SCSI Card Beta Firmware Update for OS X:
"Initio placed beta OS X drivers (firmware update) for their excellent Miles UltraWide SCSI controller (PCI) on their site, Tuesday. They had the limitations that: they work only with HD's, booting is not supported, and they do not support OS X's "deep sleep mode." Yesterday they updated these drivers so that on G3's, you can boot off of a Miles-connected drive--on G4 booting is still in the works.

Drivers for Initio Bluenote and MilesU2W boards will appear soon.
Get the drivers on Initio's site: http://www.initio.com

ID's Devine Plan File on Quake3 Updates:
A .plan File dated 4/17/01 (link at BluesNews) from Graeme Devine of ID has comments about updates to Quake3 but nothing definite as far as a release date nor anything specific on the Altivec support mentioned some months back. Devine said the next update is "still a ways out. We've been working extremely hard to get it to you, and working with the mod community to get all the features into the point that you've asked for, and it's all taking a little more time than we originally anticipated." He also noted working on other projects with time critical deadlines. [Thanks to JJ for sending the link.]

OS X/Carbon Version of Altivec Fractal Demo Benchmark:
There's now a carbon version of the Altivec Fractal Demo benchmark I've used in most of my past G4 CPU upgrade reviews. For more info and to download it, see http://daugerresearch.com/fractaldemos/altivecfractalcarbon.html.

Jumper Settings Note on Travelstar Drive Upgrades for PowerBooks:
A reader wrote that he had waking from sleep problems on a PowerBook Firewire model after replacing the hard drive with a 20GB IBM Travelstar. He said the reason was the drive had a jumper set to slave. Removing the jumper (master mode) solved it. I have installed at least 4 Travelstar drives and none shipped with a jumper installed, but it's something to check before you install it. (Note: This will not solve the wake from sleep issue (after the display lid is closed) with Travelstar drives in Wallstreet models - that is due to a magnetic sensor as noted in articles here and in drive database reports.)
Related Links:

Although my drives didn't ship with any jumpers, I've added a note to check this to these guides in case any readers get a drive with a jumper installed.

Toast 5.01 Update Improves DAO with Yamaha 2100 Firewire Drive:
"Using the latest version of Toast has enabled my Yamaha 2100E (in a FireWireDirect case) to reliably use Disk at Once mode for burning both audio and data. This resulted in many coasters using Toast 4.X

File for Benchmarking SETI:
Since each normal SETI block is different, this makes comparing performance between machines difficult. I knew Michiro Isobe had posted a note about a SETI benchmark file and wrote him for the info.

"The seti benchmarking site is "ArsTechnica team lambchop".
www.teamlambchop.com/bench/index.htm

The benchmarking file is here.
www.teamlambchop.com/bench/benchfile.htm

After SETI was updated to ver.3, there are few benchmarking results of Mac. If you and your readers perform this test unit, please post the result.
Best Regards,
Michiro Isobe"

OS X on CPU Upgraded iMacs:
There's a thread in the forums here with a note on running OS X on CPU upgraded iMacs. A Powerlogix iForce G3/500 owner noted he's running OS X on his iMac with 256MB of RAM, but commented on the lack of acceleration with the onboard RagePro graphics chip. There's no support for the iMac GameWizard (Voodoo2) card in OS X, so he's rebooting into OS 9.1 for gaming.

If anyone has installed OS X on a Newer Tech iMac G4/433 upgrade (reviewed here last year), let me know.
Newer Tech closed their doors some time back, but it's hoped that Sonnet (who hired many Newer Tech engineers) may eventually offer an iMac G4 CPU upgrade. (These upgrades were for iMac G3/233-333MHz models only). Powerlogix is currently the only company selling iMac CPU upgrades and announced a G4 iMac upgrade back on Feb. 22 but I have not seen them available yet. They also have an iForce G4 product page at their web site.

CDRW/CD/DVD/HD Compatibility Database Updates:
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 6 new entries added this morning. The database has reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROMs, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, MO drives, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 3,573 reports. [BTW - the drive database is not a place to post questions, it's for reports on drives you've used. For guides to drive installs, see the IDE, SCI or Firewire articles linked above and/or the FAQ. If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database.
