Quicktime 5.01 Update Available:
Last week there were reports of a QT 5.01 update available, but only by reinstalling QT 4.x (not from the QT 5 preview updater). Checking today using QT 5 preview 3 update check I was able to update to the 5.01 version. (I see it's also listed at Apple's QT download page now. If you have trouble with the internet installer, you can download the standalone installer.) As noted previously in an Apple TIL, QT Pro keys purchased before Oct 12th, 2000 do not work to enable Pro features in Quicktime 5.01. (They're defined as QT 3/4 Pro keys).
As noted here in past articles (last October in this article and in a later XLR8 G4/MPe performance tests page), Quicktime 5 was nearly twice as fast as QT 4 in tests of iMovie2 exports.

Plextor 16/10/40 IDE CDRW Firmware Update:
Lee Eichelberger sent a note that Plextor has a 1.01 firmware update for the 16/10/40A IDE drive at Here's the changes noted in the 1.01 udpate:

    Fixed Bugs:
  • Hang up in following combination: ABIT-2 / DMA Mode [ABIT is PC motherboard vendor-Mike]
  • Hang up in following combination: i440BX / Windows Me / EZ CD Creator / DMA Mode / 16X writing
  • Boot problems on Compaq Prosignia 320
  • Packet Writing with small packets

  • Write performance and Burn-Proof performance
  • Read performance

The linked page lists a Mac flasher 1.50 that you use with the binary firmware update file. The 1.50 Plextor flasher for Mac supports IDE and SCSI drives but not firewire models based on past reports.
For reader reports on the IDE Plextor 16/10/40 drive, search the Mac Drive Compatibility Database. The CDR section of our FAQ has a reader's unofficial iTunes support file also.

(While on the subject of CDRW drives, I've updated my review of the Formac 12/10/32 Firewire drive with results of Toast 5.01 tests this weekend.)

As always, thanks and all the best,

The upgrades were tested in a B&W G3.

iTunes Helper Feedback from VeloCD Firewire Drive Owner:
Last week I posted a note on iTunes CD-RW Helper ( A VeloCD firewire drive owner wrote that it worked well:

" mike.
I just downloaded this little thing. it is fantastic
i tunes now sees my TDK VELO CDRW 121032 in a ads firewire case it was very simple i opened the itunes helper then selected the sanyo option (i think the tdk has a sanyo mechanism) then i open itunes, created a small 6 tracks play list, selected the burn option and bingo!!!
itunes now sees my TDK drive.

I welcome other comments on iTunes Helper (I'm especially curious on Combo DVD/CDRW drive owner experiences).

Nvidia GeForceMX Overclocked Firmware:
"I found how overclock the ram of the 2Mx see (in french). i'll translate it soon.

Open with resedit GeForce2MX AE Flasher-1027.
Go to It is a php calculator to translate frequences to hexa
Open NVRM resource search the first 7C47204E sequence(7C47 is for NVIDIA 183 Mhz) replace 7C47 with the new hex frequence search the 7C477C477C47 sequence. replace the FIRST (only) 7C47 with the new hex frequence.
common Apple cards support more than 200 but less than 215 if the ram of the card is 6ns (pc flashed) you can overclock it to 190

PS: the apple 2MX is already [running at] 200/183 (GPU/RAM) and sorry for my english
best regards

There's a thread on this mod in the forums here with more info and reader reports.

Yamaha IDE 2100 CDRW and Toast 5:
IDE Yamaha 2100EZ (16/10/40)
Beige G3, OS 9.1

"I have posted before regarding the problems using Toast and Jam with my IDE 16x lightspeed CDRW. The 5.0.1 update did not solve the sense error problem when burning audio. I have been in contact with the developers and I am now using an alpha version of Toast 5.0.2 and it solved the problem!!

While my drive is now fully functional, I must recommend users choose another 16x CDRW. The Yamaha 2100EZ has a numbert of problems: it is VERY loud. I don't know how other 16x drives from other manufacturers compare regarding noise, but when the 2100EZ spins up (ie, ripping audio), it sounds like a hovercraft is taking off. The worst problem has got to be the firm ware update support, or lack of it. This kills me: Yamaha markets the 2100EZ to Mac users, and then has the gall to not release mac compatible firmware updates. The advice they give when asked how a Mac user may upgrade their IDE CDRW? Put it in a PC and run the PC firmware update. Why market to Mac users if you will not develop Mac software updates?
Mike S. "

Note - In the March 30th news here I posted a note that Yamaha does have Mac firmware updaters for the SCSI and Firewire 2100 drives (see lower part of this page), but there are no IDE 2100 drive updaters there currently. The page with the SCSI and Firewire 2100 firmware updates is now listed in the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section. (Note - there's also a page here with previous owner reports on the Yamaha 2100 firmware update.)

They've been hard to find in the past, but some mail order dealers like Outpost list them at $129.xx. The Audio Topics forum here has comments and feedback from Mac SBlive owners and Creative Labs.

CDRW/CD/DVD/HD Compatibility Database Updates:
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 19 new entries added this morning. The database has reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROMs, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 3,601 reports. [BTW - the drive database is not a place to post questions, it's for reports on drives you've used. For guides to drive installs, see the IDE, SCI or Firewire articles linked above and/or the FAQ. If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database.
