GroBoto - 3D Modeling for Kids

A reader posted a note about a cool 3D app at Their more info page says:

GroBoto is an intuitive 3D art tool, providing an environment where learning occurs naturally through the playful pursuit of cool images.

GroBotos tools provide easy, real-time access to the three dimensional world. They allow for the natural flow of curiosity, leading to a deeper understanding of Spacial Concepts, Mathematics, Algorithmic Art, Animation, Artificial Life, Chaos, and Complexity.

Freeform drawing in GroBoto can be enjoyed by children as young as four or five. Analogs to drawing, painting, and familiar toys like blocks and Legos provide a handle to the GroBoto world.

Older kids soon develop an interest in the next level of GroBoto tools that provide a natural, relational means of navigating and building in three dimensional space. "Touching" any object in the GroBoto scene with the cursor places the new object in a nearby 3D location. Animation, simulation, algorithmic sculpture, and game design offer excitement and challenge without limits. "

GroBoto requires a "PowerMac with G3 or G4 processor, OS 7.61 or later (8.0 or later above [preferred I assume], compatible with OS X in Classic mode), 14 MB RAM (27 MB Recommended), 18 MB HD space (25 MB Recommended), 800x600 pixel, 256-color display (1024x768, 16-bit recommended)".
There's a 30 day trial version and related files at their downloads page. They also have a Gallery page with user created samples.

Reader Comments on Low-Cost 'DragonBurn' CD Burning Software
A reader post in the forums a few days ago mentioned a new Mac CD burning software called DragonBurn. One reader replied with comments on using it:

" The program works as advertised. Initially I kept making coasters until I discovered that I had virtual memory on. After I turned it off no more coasters. The program interface is simple and straight forward, kinda reminds of the old CD Master. For the money [$19.99] it's hard to beat. If they make an OS X version I'll buy it.
... I am able to burn audio cds at the full speed (12x) of my Sony burner mounted in an external firewire case.
    Ray "

Their website notes it requires OS 9.04 or later and that an OS X version is in development. I did not see a list of supported drives there however but there's a trial version available for download. As of today the price is $19.99 (US) - $10 off the normal $29.99 list price according to their online store.

Quake3 Fortress 2.0 Notes on Mac Compatibility
This weekend I noticed that Fileplanet listed a 2.0 release of the Quake3 Fortress mod. For more info on the mod and download links, see the website which also has a FAQ and support forums. Their FAQ links to another Mac specific FAQ that notes due to VM interpreter issues, Mac users running Q3F v2 won't be able to connect to "pure" servers (which means most public servers).

Two Radeon 7000 Owners report 8500 Drivers Fixed Dual Monitor Problems
In the last week since posting the download link to the 8500 1.0 drivers, I've had two Radeon 7000 (PCI) card owners note that installing these drivers in OS 9 (which have extensions for other ATI card models) solved problems they had running 2 displays with the 7000 card. Here's comments from owners of the 7000 card in both Umax S900' and 9500s:

" Concerning Mac Radeon 7000 Graphics Card and dual output with DVI to VGA converter:

Just installed the new Radeon 8500 Installer over the 7000 one and guess what? I now have the two VGA outputs on the 7000 working with a Sony 19" and an Applevision 750AV!
I seriously hope this will help all 7000 owners!
Thanks for your great usefull website, Patrick S.
[I asked what Mac model he had-Mike]

Tried the driver and the card on both a Umax S900 and an Apple 9500 with XLR8 G4 450 CPU. In the PCI Slots were the Radeon 7000 together with a miroMotion DC30 +, an Adaptec 2940U2W and an AudioMedia III from Digidesign. "

After the above report a 2nd S900 owner wrote about dual monitor problems - so I suggested the drive the 8500 drivers. He wrote that fixed the problem:

    "Hi Mike,
Whatever it was, it worked. I have removed R-7000 driver and installed R-8500 driver and the UMAX S-900 runs both monitors of the same card. It does help to power up the second monitor (DVI-1 socket) after total boot up on primary monitor only. Anyway IT WORKS. Thank you so much!!!
I am not sure I had to change the card driver but now - "if it is not broken don't mend it". Thanks again, I am ethernaly grateful.

The 8500 1.0 drivers were linked in the April 2nd news page. [A 7000 owner said the ROM xtender file alone didn't help.]
I've added these reports to the Radeon 7000 owner feedback page.

XPostFacto OS X on Legacy Macs Utility Updated for Orig. PB G3, PB 3400/2400 Support and More
Ryan Rempel updated his XPostFacto utility yesterday to v2.2b1, which includes the following changes/improvements:

  • Beta-level support for the original Powerbook G3, the 3400 and (possibly) the 2400.
  • Fixes for the "kernel panic if nothing connected to onboard video" problem. (The ATI driver update will still be needed for some ATI cards, however).
  • Will permit installation onto drives connected to the UltraTek IDE card (with the OWC/FirmTek upgrade applied).
  • Fixes a problem installing Darwin 1.4.1.
  • Fixes a problem with Mac OS 9.2.x.

For more info and download links see OWC's XPostFacto Home page.
(Note: one reader with a PB 2400 and OS X on an external SCSI drive noted kernel panics - not sure if this is due to OS X being on the external drive.)

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]

(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
