Microsoft Security Updates for OutLook Express, IE and Office 2001/Office X
Several security related updates from Microsoft today.

    (OS 8.1-OS 9 related)
Microsoft Office 2001 URL Security Update
This updater addresses a security vulnerability that could be exploited to run malicious code on your computer. For more information about this update, see Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-019.
Note: You must install Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 before you install this update.
    Applies to: Office 2001 Service Release 1 (SR1), Word 2001 SR1, Excel 2001 SR1, PowerPoint® 2001 SR1, Entourage(tm) 2001 SR1, Word + Entourage 2001 Special Edition

    Microsoft Outlook Express- 5.0.4
This latest version version 5.0.4 resolves all security vulnerabilities in previous versions of Outlook Express 5. This includes vulnerabilities that might have caused Outlook Express to stop responding or caused a memory problem that compromised the security of the computer. For more information, see Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-019.

Internet Explorer 5.1.4 The above bulletin also mentions IE 5.1 is affected - the Internet Explorer 5.1 download page still shows the previous date of Dec 18th, 2001 but the direct download link filepath shows a 5.1.4 version. (I downloaded and installed it - it is 5.1.4, the previous IE 5.1 update was v5.1.3.)

    (OS X Related Updates)

    • URL Security Update: Addresses a security vulnerability that could be exploited to allow malicious code to run on your computer. For more information about this update, see Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-019 .

    Applies to: Office v. X, Word X, Excel X, PowerPoint® X, Entourage X

DrBott's DVIator (ADC adapter) Bundles w/ATI Radeon 7000 PCI and 8500 AGP
(from the press release)

"Dr. Bott certifies use of Radeon 7000(PCI) & 8500(AGP) with DVIator, Offering DVIator bundles with new video cards from ATI.

Dr. Bott certifies use of Radeon 7000(PCI) & 8500(AGP) with DVIator. Dr. Bott certifies ATI Radeon 7000 and 8500 as the choice for running the coolest displays on the market. This combination was the choice seen around MacWorld SF and MacWorld Tokyo as the solution in ATI's booth and the Apple gaming pavilion. Upgrade your older PCI based Macs or AGP based G4s with Apples 15", 17", and 22" ADC displays. This combo has seen amazing results including utilizing all the available resolutions and eliminates compatibility issues found in previous ATI cards.

In honor of the great solution DVIator and the latest Radeon cards from ATI, Dr. Bott has teamed with ATI to offer the following bundles with DVIator and a video card from ATI.
DVIator & Radeon 7000 Mac Edition Bundle (Retail $299)
    DVIator & Radeon 8500 Mac Edition Bundle (Retail$339) "

[Note: For those considering using a new 23" ADC Cinema Display, note the 7000 and 8500 is said to have a DVI port max resolution of 1600x1200 - which is less than the native resolution of the 23 inch Cinema display.]
That 8500 Bundle price ($339) is shown as of noon today at their site - but I wonder if it's accurate since the 8500 card alone lists for $299 and the DVIator lists for $149. (Note there's only $40 difference in the 7000 vs 8500 card bundle - but the 7000 PCI card lists for $129 vs $299 for the 8500.)
Update - a reader who bought the 8500 bundle said the $339 was an introductory price. (I'm not sure when the price on the 8500 bundle changes.)

Feedback on Floppy Disk Driver for OS X from PB G3 Owner
Yesterday's news had a note on an OS X Floppy driver at http://www.darwin-development.org/floppy/. (That page lists some known bugs in the current (0.91) version and notes some compatibility info also.) A PowerBook G3 owner noted he could not get the current (0.91) version to work:

Hi guys, PowerBook G3 Series (Revision 2) (aka: PDQ), [aka wallstreet2 I assume-Mike] drive doesn't work in either bay, whether inserted at startup or not. So far the only success stories on Versiontracker were from desktop users.
    Peter G."

**Update** - several other readers replied to this post - at least one powerbook G3 wallstreet owner reported the driver worked if the floppy was inserted in the bay before startup. (However there were some quirks noted.) See Wednesday's news for later reports on the floppy driver.

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]

(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
