OS X Patch for USB PenDrives:
A very sharp reader spotted a note about an OS X patch for the PenDrives to solve an issue with writes to the drive in OS X 10.1.3 (not sure if 10.1.4 is compatible)

" Hi Mike, I haven't used these but saw you're mention in the drive database of a patch and it not being available from the site. I had a look around and found it here:
    The ReadMe says:
"This software will prevent media from being incorrectly detected as read-only when used in card reader or flash device on a computer running Mac OS X 10.1.3. If you are using an earlier version, or if you do not suffer such problem, you do not need this patch."

    HTH :)
    ben boffey"

I'll add this info to the FAQ and the Pendrive database comments in the next 24 hours.

OS X 10.1.4 Sleep/Wake from Sleep Problems with Some Systems
I don't know how many Mac models/configs this happens with, but I have just seen a problem with a 2002 Quicksilver (dual 1GHz G4) and sleep mode after updating to OS X 10.1.4. The only PCI card in the system is the OEM $49 SCSI card option (adaptec) and it has the OEM GeForce4MX card installed. After updating to 10.1.4 last night today I see the following problems:

  • It will not go into Deep Sleep (the monitor blanks but the fans never stop and the power button never goes into pulse mode)
  • If the system is left in sleep for more than a few minutes it will not wake properly - the monitor never gets a video signal again. (Sony FW900 CRT used.) I had to do a forced reset/reboot. The graphics card is the OEM GeForce4MX with the latest 1091 firmware. (Note - a 2nd test after another reboot showed it did wake the monitor - but I want to test again with longer sleep to see if this issue repeats.)

I have no OS X 3rd party software addons, no external devices connected to that system. I also tested deep sleep with my DP533 system running 10.1.4 with a Radeon 8500 and it would deep sleep and wake from sleep properly (Sony F400 CRT used).
Here's other reader reports on 10.1.4 and sleep issues:

" I never installed Norton, but I've been having sleep issues on my sawtooth machine in OSX. When I first installed OSX 10.1, I didn't have any problems, then it occasionally started to not wake from sleep, I thought that it was USB Overdrive, but then with that uninstalled, it started again. Now if I let it sleep for more than about 5 minutes it will not wake from sleep. OS 9.2.2 works perfectly. I have gone as far as reinstalling 10.1 (Since I had 10.1.3), but it does not seem to make any difference. I will continue updating and running drive utilities etc, to try to hunt it down, but it is definitely really annoying. Looking in the Apple Support database, there are a number of posts about sleep issues in OS X (well over 20 different ones), so I doubt that this is related to Norton.
    Coyote "

    " Hi Mike,
I wanted to pass along that on my dual 533, 896, 240 gig, Cinema, that after the 10.1.4 update my computer won't wake properly from deep sleep - just a blank blue desktop; seems the drives won't wake. I'm using the Ultratek ATA, for the other two drives which mount fine, but won't wake along with the master and slave connected to the onboard controller. Could be something with the ATA - I've applied the flasher which worked great, but maybe a bug with 10.1.4.
    Sean "

I'll test again with my G4/533 DP but it went into deep sleep and woke properly just now (no PCI cards installed, only the Radeon 8500 AGP card in the system.)

A reader noted earlier today he had a wake from sleep issue after installing Norton IS 2.0 but now I wonder if this is related to OS X 10.1.4 instead.

Another annoying thing after the 10.1.4 update is that the clock seems to get set to 24 hour time. (Noted by others also - to reset it you have to go into the System Preferences, International, Time, click 12 hour clock. I wish that setting was in the Date and Time control panel where most people will look for it.)

Reader Reports Matshita PB Combo Drive DiscBurner Support after 10.1.4 Update
Earlier today I noted the 10.1.4 update added support in iTunes for a Lacie 32/10/40 Firewire CDRW drive owner. A reader just wrote that his Matshita UJDA710 Combo DVD/CDRW drive now works with DiscBurner after the update. (Note: This drive is usually bought on ebay and mounted in a PB G3 expansion bay housing as noted last year in two articles here on the Systems page, PowerBook section):

" I installed OS X update 10.1.4 and when I reviewed the new files I noticed it installed a new Matshita support file. I have a PowerBook G3 2000 which I have installed a UJDA710 combo drive in. I have been unable to burn CD's using the built in CD burning software in OS X. I thought I would try again and found the finder disk burning software now works. I was able to insert a blank CD prepare it and burn a 70 meg file to it. Before it would crash the computer in the final burning phase. I then tried to burn a CD in iTunes and it still does not work. When I select a play list and hit the Burn button the message window says "CD burner or software not found". My UJDA710 is shown in the burning tab in iTunes preferences. But it always did. Does iTunes use a different driver file or is it still not fixed?

I don't think DB support implies iTunes support - since many of the drives we have posted modified support files for were said to work in Discburner but not in iTunes without the modified files. I asked if he would check the OS X plugin file to see if the UJDA710 is listed in the file - or try our modified OS X iTunes plugin file posted in the articles and FAQ here last year (download link is here).
( These drives usually ship set to slave but the articles here noted solder mods to set them to Master - not sure that is a factor however.)

OS X 10.1.4 Updater Download Link and List of Changed Files
Yesterday's news noted that 10.1.4 was available via OS X Software Updates and listed the changes/improvements noted in the readme. Reader Roland Burton later sent a link to the Download/Standalone updater.

One of the latest updates in the Drive Database was from a Lacie 32/10/40 Firewire CDRW owner that said 10.1.4 enabled iTunes support for the drive that was missing previously. (The readme for 10.1.4 noted better support for several brands of CDRW drives, including Lacie.)

Roland also sent a list of changed files in 10.1.4:

Not sure if you want to post this on your site - but these are the files the Installer updates:

Interesting that the kernel has been modified.

Hopefully more of the previously unsupported (and faster model) CDRW drives will have support now. Our FAQ's CDROM/CDR section here has some modified support files for several drives, but this update may make some of those (I hope) unnecessary now.

Company Announces (PC) DirectX to MacOS Porting Software
At first I thought this was an april-fools, but a reader noted that Macworld yesterday had an article about a company called Coderus that says they have developed "MacDX" (Direct-X Interface for MacOS) that allows easy porting of PC DirectX based games to the Mac (only the original source code for the game is needed according to the article.)
If this is for real, it would mean many PC titles could be ported to the mac for far less cost (and more quickly). That's assuming that MacDX works well, has no compatibility or performance issues, etc.
Here's their features listing:

  • Supports MacOS 9.x and MacOS-X Seamlessly.
  • Supports wide range of machines iMacs (revision B or later), G3s (blue and white desktops or later), or G4s.
  • Easily integrated into your favourite development environment

They also have downloadable [doc files] MacDX datasheet and case study (using Wipeout 2097).

Reader Reports Norton Internet Security 2.0 (OS X) and Wake from Sleep Issue
(from a reader email - see the later post above on similar problem reports that did not involve Norton Internet Security.)

"I downloaded and installed Norton Internet Security 2.0 (OS X) on my QS 733 and now the machine won't wake from deep sleep.

There was also a user with a Quicksilver 1 gHz who reported the same problem on the Symantec support website, but decided to return the software instead of troubleshooting. I am currently e-mailing back and forth with Symantec trying to figure it out. So far, they want to know if I have any other applications that install kernel extensions into my machine. I use typical software (Office X, Graphic Converter, the "Apple Apps" (iTunes, AppleScript, Terminal, etc)). No games installed yet, but I would assume that something I use installed kernel extensions.

I have a G3 Lombard and I am going to try and see if I have the same problem.

When I know more, I'll e-mail. For now, I set the energy saver panel to "never sleep".

If any other users of the 2.0 version have seen any problems in OS X let me know. (Include your system, etc. details in reports)

OS X IE 5.1.4 Overwrites Flash 6 Plugin with Older Version
(from a reader email)

"Mike, Just to say that the IE 5.1.4 installer under OS X replaces the Flash plugin with 5.0r58 even if you had a more recent release installed (I had Flash 6 installed - I have had to rerun the Flash installer).
    tut-tut Microsoft.

IE 5.1.4 was a security related update noted in Tuesday's news. (One of many MS updates that day including Office X, Office 2001 and OE 5.04.)

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]

(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
