| Reports that 10.2.5 fixes the slave Superdrive not recognized issue with 10.2.4 |
| When 10.2.4 was first released, there were many reports here from MDD G4 owners that their slave set (lower bay) Superdrives were not recognized after that update. (They had worked fine in 10.2.3 in the lower bay/slave/CS setting). An Apple programmer had commented that this was due to a bug in the drive's firmware (saying no specific IDE/ATAPI code had been changed). I was wondering if 10.2.5 may address this and the first reports from MDD owners so far have noted it does:
"
Mike,
FYI- I updated with the Combo, and the 2nd DVD-R I had that 10.2.4 update
"rendered useless" due is now recognized and the option-eject works too!
(as well as drop down menu).
I guess there will be a flood of new fixes and broke issues to come.

Another MDD owner wrote:
"
Mike, Just a quick note with some good news. I have an MDD and recently installed a Yamaha F1E CDRW in my top 5.25" slot, moving the Apple Superdrive to the lower slot. With 10.2.4, the best config I could have for the drives was to set Superdrive as master and my Yamaha CDR as slave, required a "option-eject" to use the Yamaha. In 10.2.5 I'm able to set the Superdrive to slave... and use a simple "eject" to use my Yamaha. Eject menulet works as advertised too. iDVD 3 launches w/o errors and looks like it will work but I haven't tested a burn yet. A very quick check around the system looks like all is good (pressed for time at the moment; getting ready to watch the Lakers-Kings game at 7pm.)
Oh, why would I be so happy about this? I want to use my Yamaha as my default "primary" drive as it's faster, etc. I've been pretty neurotic about this little issue, so I'm stoked now with 10.2.5. I've been waiting for 10.2.5 to enter a drive report for your site, so I'll get around to that soon now.
Best, - Justin B.

| First report on 10.2.5 and Battery Life |
In the past there's been more than a few reports of reduced battery life with Jaguar - here's the first reader comments on 10.2.5:
"
Mike, in case nobody has commented, it seems my battery life is back...
I have a G4 400 TiBook and I was getting about a half hour of battery
time (?!?) since upgrading to Jaguar. Now, with the update, it seems battery
life has improved significantly. mark
"
If anyone else that had lower than expected battery life in previous 10.2.x versions sees an improvement with 10.2.5, let me know.

| iBook owner notes 10.2.5 enabled Overscan on external Video |
"
Hi Mike,
I downloaded OS X 10.2.5 update. Since then the OVERSCAN feature for
video out on my iBook is availlable! It has been implemented in OS 9,
but this is the first time it's in OS X. To all readers unfamiliar with
OVERSCAN: if the AV cable is plugged in and connected to the TV screen
the display of the iBook appears within a black frame on the TV screen.
If OVERSCAN is switched on the picture is zoomed in such a way that
those black frames are gone. This is the best setup to watch DVDs on a
TV screen.

| PowerBook 5300 owner info using 802.11b PCCard |
| A PowerBook 5300 owner sent a long email comments/links on using a 802.11b PCcard (Orinoco gold card) with that older powerbook and OS 8.1 and 8.6.
|
"
Hi Mike, I would like to share with you my experience in
getting the PowerBook 5300ce (the very first Apple
PowerBook with PowerPC processor, introduced in
8/25/1995, codename M2) onto IEEE 802.11b network with
ORiNOCO Gold 16-bit (non-cardbus) PCMCIA card. (Note:
ORiNOCO Silver does not work with PB5300).
We all understand that this "Flamming PowerBook" is
almost a 8 years old machine - so what? As long as it
works! :-) ...
Why not OS 9? Because OS 9
is too heavy for PB5300 thus it will slow down the
performance of PB5300. (For OS 8.1, please install CarbonLib 1.0.4 before proceeding).
The Mac drivers for the ORiNOCO cards are not
available out of the box and not available on their
support website (www.proxim.com).
The driver ORiNOCO 7.2 (ORiNOCO_v7.2.smi.hqx) does not
even allow the PB5300 (no luck on either OS 8.6 or OS
9.0.4) to detect and "mount" the card. Instead, the
driver WaveLAN IEEE PC card 6.00.4 (apt6041i.hqx)
works without any glitch. Both drivers can be
downloaded at www.versiontracker.com, just type in
"ORiNOCO" and "WaveLAN" in the Mac OS search field
respectively. Please note that it is fine not to be
able to see the Control Panels INIT named "WaveLAN
Setup" loading during OS 8.6 Starting Up. This INIT
does show up during OS 8.1 Starting Up.
Please note that the ORiNOCO Gold card is recognised
by AppleTalk as "Alternate Ethernet" on OS 8.1 (or
"Ethernet" on OS 8.6) but not "WaveLAN/IEEE" as stated
in some websites.
This website
http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/Airport/Airport12OS86.html
gives me a hint of the possibility of using AirPort
with OS 8.6. (Thanks, Rob). [I used a wavelan Silver card with my wallstreet PB G3 with O 8.6 and Ladd Morse wrote he's used a Wavelan Silver with this PB 5300 also-Mike
Perhaps he meant that you can't use the Silver card with AirPort, or
some other situation, because I've been using an Orinoco Silver card
in my 5300 for years, with a Farallon Wireless Base Station.
Regards,
Ladd Morse"
The Orinoco silver card was also the original PCcard inside the first Apple Airport Base Station. The Silver card however only supports 64Bit WEP (the Gold card supports 128Bit WEP). -Mike]
And instead of using
AirPort 1.2, I have tested it working fine with
AirPort v 1.3.1 + OS 8.1 (and v 2.0.4 + OS 8.6) using
the similar method described on the website. (Note:
The AirPort Control Strip is not working in OS 8.1).
Now is the stage where we need to do some extra
clickings before logging onto WiFi network:
For OS 8.1, launch OTTool 1.2.1 first (downloaded at
ftp://ftp2.neon.com/pub/goodies ).
For OS 8.6, launch AirPort Admin Utility (AAU) 1.3.1
first. Technically, I guess by launching OTTool 1.2.1 (or AAU
1.3.1), the auto-scanning process during startup
triggles the WiFi's DHCP server to assign dynamic IP
for PB5300.
(I have tested that AAU higher than 1.3.1 is not
compatible with PB5300 + OS 8.6. AirPort software and
AAU are not compatible with OS 8.1 though).
CarbonLib 1.0.4, AirPort softwares version 1.3.1 and
2.0.4 can be downloaded from Apple support website.
Have fun with WiFi.
P/S: I might try it with AirPort 2.0.4 + OS 8.1 on
PB5300 later.
Cheers,
Marcus

The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
