News stories of April 26th, 2004: (later posted items first) |
| Blue laser (23GB) and dual-layer (8.5GB) DVD burners expected to ship in June |
PCworld today has an article titled Blue Laser Products Emerge saying 23GB DVD burners are due to ship in June, but not consumer priced models (article mentions internal drives priced at $2500, ext. drives at $3000).
But as mentioned earlier this year, the article also says dual-layer (appx 8.5GB) DVD burners from Sony should start to appear in June. The Sony drive they say will sell for about $230 for the internal version (DRU-700A), and $330 for the external (700UL) version. Dual-layer write speeds they quoted were 2.4x. Dual-layer media is expected to be in short supply initially and sell for appx $10 per disc. (As usual - media availability usually lags advances in DVD burner drives.)
And of course there will be no native iApps burn support on the Mac for new drives like this - but when the drives actually ship in qty I'd be curious to see if Patchburn II would work with them to enable iApps burn support.
I'm pretty satisfied with my (cheap now) Pioneer DVR-107D internal and Plextor PX-708A (FW cased) 8x DVD burners for now, so I'll wait for some time before buying a dual-layer drive and may just wait (for however long) for a consumer priced blue-laser drive to become available and skip the dual-layer drives completely.

| Airport 3.4.1 Update released |
| Checking Software Update in 10.3.3 shows an Airport 3.4.1 update (which I hope files some issues like reconnecting on wake from sleep I've had on 2 systems with airport 3.4.0, as well as lower indicated signal strength). Here's the info from Software Update panel, which sounds similar to the 3.4 update claims:
"
This software update provides improved AirPort wireless networking software, and is recommended for all users with an AirPort Extreme and AirPort enabled computer or an AirPort Extreme base station.
New AirPort Extreme Features
Improved antenna output control.
Enhanced logging from your base station which is compatible with syslog.
Performance improvements for WPA security implementations.
"
I didn't revert back to Airport v3.3.1 like some readers did, so I'm applying this now. If any other readers try this update let me know if it solves any problems you had with v3.4. (Not everyone had a problem with 3.4, but more than a few did.)
Update: After applying 3.4.1 on the PowerBook G4 and G5 DP systems and rebooting - the problem I had with reconnecting after waking from sleep (100% of the time on the G5) doesn't seem fixed. (I somehow managed to fix the problem on the PB G4, but not on the G5. I'll keep trying...)
Sometimes I've seen no video on the G5 after waking from sleep (which eventually kicks the fans on full speed since no fan control is running). This happened only once before but I've seen it twice now on the G5 with 3.4.1 (out of about 5 wake from sleep tests after 5-10 min. of sleep time.) Holding the power button in until the system shuts off, then restarting and trying again usually is ok (wakes from sleep but no reconnect to the airport network). As with 3.4.0, I've tried about everything on the G5 to no avail (repairing permissions, clearing caches, toggling settings, etc.)
Although one reader said 3.4.1 improved Signal strength, it's about the same here with 3.4.1 as with 3.4.0 (appx 73% per AP Grapher with PB G4 appx 7ft from the AE base; appx 63% on the G5 which is about 17ft from the base in another room separated by 2 plaster walls). I had much lower signal strength originally with 3.4, but changing from channel 10 or Channel 1 (auto) to Channel 11 boosted signal strength 20% here on the PB G4 which is very close to the base.

| EyeTV 1.3.6b4 Software Update (for EyeTV 200 users) |
| Greg sent a copy of an email from El Gato tech support on beta update to EyeTV software. Here's a clip with info and download link:
"
... be aware that we are working on updating the EyeTV software to rectify issues, mostly in the area of connectivity. Kernel panics could be due to bad hardware; and we can exchange for a new unit if you still have it. (some previous reports on the EyeTV feedback pagenoted a possible heat issue with a specific production build.) General issues will be addressed by EyeTV 1.3.6, coming in a few weeks. EyeTV 1.3.5 is available from our website for download, and you can also try a beta version of 1.3.6, to see if it makes any difference.
http://www.elgato.com/support/eyetv136b4.zip
This is far from the final 1.3.6 version, which will take care of more bugs. If you find the time, please test this beta, to see if there is any improvement. Specifically, look for no more crashes while editing, and perhaps improved connectivity.
1. Unplug EyeTV hardware from Mac.
2. Unplug all other FireWire devices.
3. Launch this version 1.3.6b4.
4. Plug in the EyeTV hardware.
5. Click OK when asked to update.
6. When next dialog comes, unplug EyeTV.
7. Click OK in the EyeTV software.
8. Quit EyeTV.
9. Relaunch EyeTV.
10. Plug back in EyeTV.
Look for the final 1.3.6 release in a week or two.
If you are still using EyeTV 200, let me know if this makes any difference. (use their online support form as I do not have an email address for Nick.)

| Dragthing and RsyncX Updates |
| DragThing has been updated to v5.1.1.
This release works round a reported problem with the recent McAfee Virex 7.5 beta which could cause DragThing not to quit properly on shutdown, restart or logout.
It also adds new features including enhanced contextual menus and
AppleScript support, greatly improves saving and loading of docks
and other files, and is a lot faster to start up than 5.1.
A full list of all changes can be found here: http://www.dragthing.com/english/history.html"
Also over the weekend I received an email about an update to
RsyncX "
RsyncX v2.1 is a comprehensive file management suite. It allows users to easily manage files between machines. Version 2.1 features enhanced error reporting, update and two-way sync options, new script generators, several new assistants, and enhanced chflags support. RsyncXCD has been updated

- Firewire (cased) Pioneer DVR-107D used w/iMac slot-loading (OS X 10.3)
(noted he got one of the rare "DVD RW" ID drives, so he had to use
Patchburn II for Panther burn support.)

- IDE Toshiba SD-R5272 in Dual G4 (OS X 10.3)
(using Patchburn II for Panther burn support.)

Hard Drives:
- IDE Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40GB in Beige G3 (OS X)
(Beige G3 MT illustrated HD upgrade guide here)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
