| First Impressions from iBook G4/1GHz owner |
"
I wanted to let you know I got my 1GHz iBook G4 today. It actually shows 1.07GHz in the system profiler! Some other changes of note from the previous low-end:
Boot ROM is now 4.85f0 was 4.77
Now reads "PowerPC G4 (1.1)" instead of (3.3) in the 800Mhz model. (G4 CPU chip changed, now has onchip 512KB L2 vs 256KB)
Radeon 9200 card is ROM is now 113-125, was 113-115.
I will pass along some benchmarks when if I get a chance to run them, but I can say that it does feel faster in general tasks. More to come.

Real-world apps tests (vs just pure benchmarks) are preferred. (Examples of common apps and game tests are included in full reviews of CPU upgrades and system tests here on those topics pages. Also there's a past review of the original iBook G4/800 here with some performance test examples.)

| Virtuoso MC-500 Digital Media Player |
Neuston Corporation sent a note about their Mac compatible Virtuoso MC-500 Digital Media Player. Not much info in the email and no pricing is mentioned at their website that I can find quickly at least (for comparison to the El Gato Eyehome at $249, although it has some features the EyeHome does not). I seached google and found only an Australian site selling them for A$399 (down from $A499) and a Cnet Asia review dated Feb. 27th, 2004 that mentioned a much lower price. (That review also comments on pros and cons they saw).
I checked their MC 500 FAQ which mentions there's a limit of 2000 sounds in a playlist. (Early EyeHome software reports here also noted similar issues with large playlists from some readers that had large song collections.)
I asked them about pricing and if the MC-500 can play iTunes Music store protected AAC files. (Early versions of the EyeHome software could, but the latest software won't per info on the EyeHome owner reports page and El Gato's EyeHome FAQ.)

| CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility Database had 3 new reports added (reader entries from Monday, entries later today are added the next newsday morning. Entries with no comments are not posted). The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total 12,943 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first)
DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
- IDE Matsushita UJ-825 (4x DVD burner) in PowerBook G4 (OS X 10.3)
(report on the new 4x OEM superdrive in the new PB G4 models)
Hard Drives:
- Firewire Maxtor One-Touch 160GB used w/96/9600 (OS 9.1)
(noted problems with maxtor os 9.x extensions)
- IDE Maxtor 160GB in Dual G4 (OS X)
(no big drive support in pre-2002 QS models, so limited
to 128GB formatted unless using Intech's driver, a PCI IDE card
w/big drive support or a firewire card w/big drive support.
Illustrated guide to adding a 2nd HD here in B&W G3 rev2 and G4 towers up to the QuickSilver models.
IDE articles page RAID section has an illustrated guide for adding 2 more drives in the side bays.)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
