| Notes on Graphics Card requirements for Apple Motion and After Effects 6.5 |
| Just a FYI for on Apple's Motion requirements regarding graphics cards. The Motion Specs page has a list of supported models.
"
One of the following graphics cards:
- NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
- NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200
- ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
- ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
- ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
- ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
- ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Reportedly the reason cards like the ATI 9000, 8500 and older models are not supported is that Motion depends on ARB_fragment_program for pixel shader effects. (The older cards don't support that .) Apparently an Nvida FX series or later is required (no support for even the Geforce4Ti).
While on the subject, the question of After Effects (v6.5 I assume) support also came up. I went to Adobe's website and here's their page of AE 6.5 supported OpenGL cards. Feature support varies but the ATI 7000/8500/9000/9600/9700/9800, Nvidia GF3/GF4MX/GF4Ti/FX5200 are listed as supported - but some features like shadows require a 9600-9800 or GF4Ti or FX5200.

| New eMac owner reports 1GB Dimms are supported |
| Monday's news page had links to revised Apple Developer docs for the new iBooks, PowerBooks and eMacs. As I mentioned that day, I was surprised that the eMac developer doc memory section listed 512MB dimms as the largest supported. (Since later iMacs and iBooks/PBs support 1GHz modules, I expected the new eMacs to also.) A reader with a new eMac wrote that he's seen no problems with two 1GB dimms however:
"
Hi Mike, We installed two TransIntl PC2700 DIMMs into a 1.25GHz/SuperDrive eMac for a customer, and they work fine -- the machine reports having 2GB of RAM. Love your site, keep up the great work!

| Report on Lacie Firewire case bridge firmware update solving DVD+RW problems |
| (I don't have this case/drive model to test but posting this as a FYI in case anyone else sees a similar problem. My OWC Oxford911 FW cased Plextor PX-708A burns ok with either format.)
"
Hi Mike, I have a litte info for you, maybe other
mac-user's have the same trouble.
I have upgraded my old external LaCie FW-400 DVD-RAM (internal
Hitachi GF-2000) with a LG GSA-4081 DVD-RAM/+-RW, firmware A101 in the old LaCie-Case.
DVD-R recording with YuBurner (installed Patchburn II) under 10.3.3 are working fine. But with DVD+RW (TDK, SONY and HP) i was unable to format or write to this kind of media. (Also with Toast 6.03). (Stop after 1 second of writing Lead-in, or get "ILLEAGAL REQUEST,
SENSE CODE 0x26, INVALID FIELD IN PARAMETER LIST")
After some time i found thas LaCie has on her WebSite
(
http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/, called 922_updater_Mac.sit) a FW-Bridge update primary for FW800 and
the old OS-X issue, but also for FW400.)
Well, I downloaded and applied it and now DVD+RW is also working fine with firmware 1.23 on the Oxford-911 bridge.
After applying the update to the Bridge it works, still there is no
difference at output from system profiler before/after the update.
Best Regards,
Jorg H., Germany

(If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
