Tip for no sound in MplayerX
(from a reader mail. I don't use Mplayer personally but have used Videolan/VLC - another Non-Apple OS X DVD/Media Player.)

"Solution to no sound in MplayerX; Also subtitles now work.
Mike, Just in case anyone else is having this problem:
Recent versions of MPlayerX (after 2.0b7; currently b9) often are reported as having no sound output. This is apparently because it inherited an obsolete pref from b7. I hunted around on the internet, found one comment that -ao option has to be set to the right audio driver, and another comment that starting with b8, it is compiled under MacOsX without support for "sdl" (a platform independent media library) and should instead be set to "macosx" (but it mistakenly gave the option as -vo instead of -ao).
I noticed that b7 (which worked) had -ao sdl set in the pref (pull down menu under the app), and this was inherited by later versions. I changed this to -ao macosx under b9, and the sound started working. Later, I discovered this was the default (at least for b9), so just erasing "-ao sdl" is sufficient.

In summary, my pref setting is now:
-vo quartz -ao macosx (although the -ao option is not needed), and for subtitle support while playing a divx avi video: -vo quartz -ao macosx -sub (path)/subtitleFile.srt (this didn't work under b7).

The -vo quartz option was also inherited and I have no idea if you really need it. I got .srt-type subtitles to work, but there are many other formats I haven't tried yet. The PC world is way ahead on subtitle processing. I used a PC prog called SubRip to rip them from the DVD's vob files, using its built-in OCR, to a .srt file (a simple text file with timing and subtitle text). Mencoder (called from ffmpegx in my case) under OSX can theoretically do the job, but the OCR interface (to give hints for difficult characters) is practically unusable.
Thanks. - Paul"

Reader Request for help w/Powerbook and Nokia N-Gage QD
(updated 1PM with more details)

" This email is in regards to your article about n-gage and mac review located at
http://xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/n-gage_mac_review.html
(reader review of the original N-Gage model.-Mike)

Comment:
I have an n-gage qd from t-mobile and it does sync to my powermac G5 with mostly no issues. I also have a powerbook (Powerbook G4 I assume, but asked-Mike) which it absolutely will not sync to but is able to transfer files via bluetooth. In the powerbook, I think the issue has something to do with Checkpoint's VPN client, Secure Client. That client has security policies that get turned on whenever I connect to the office network which is fine but locks me out from being able to print to my home printer via ZeroConf which is connected to my powermac. So, when Secure Client is running and I try to use isync, I get that error about port 3004 needing to be open, which it is on the built-in os x firewall. If I disable the security policy in Secure Client and I can once again see my printer, isync just goes into a loop. isync indefinitely says "Connecting to N-Gage". When I say indefinitely, I mean it has been going for over 24 hours.

Question:
The people posting mentioned they could tether their laptops to the n-gage and get online using the phone's gprs connection. Could you post the steps of how to do that with a powerbook? If you don't have those instructions could you forward this email with my email address to those users so that maybe they could provide me the instructions?
(he later wrote with more details)
Powerbook details:
17" Powerbook 1GHz (1GB RAM) bought I believe April 2002 or April 2003. All patches installed up to 10.3.8 along with the firmware bluetooth update, 1.5.
My Powermac G5 (Dual 1.8GHz/512MB, D-Link Bluetooth adaptor), bought November 2003. Patched up to 10.3.8. I did NOT apply the bluetooth upgrade due to the Apple provided warning that if applied to the D-Link adaptor would make it usable ONLY with Macs.

Up until yesterday I could sync with the G5. I did not heed the warning about not installing applications unless it is onto a MMC card. I installed the trial Opera browser. Now I get the app server or something error and the sync fails. Have not tried resetting the N-Gage with a soft or hard reset, yet. Just deleting the application does not help. I must say, that is being pretty picky. I'm ready to use SyncML and not bother talking to any desktop machine. There is a syncml app on the n-gage disk.

Really hope I can get instructions on how to tether my powerbook to n-gage and get onto net via t-mobile.
- Mark "

I'm going to search for past N-Gage reader mails to forward his question to, but if anyone has a suggested for Mark, let me know. Thanks
UPDATE: The N-Gage review has been updated to 2 reader replies to this post.

(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
