Macbook Pro talking at 108Mbps with Netgear WGT624 and D-Link DGL-4300 Wireless Routers
" subject: Macbook Pro and Netgear Router talking at 108Mbps
Ok, did the boot camp thing on my Macbook Pro. Well checking my internet connection (under XP SP2), the driver on the Macbook is reporting 108mbps connection to my router. My router is a Netgear with the 108Mbps compatibility option (I asked for the model number - i.e. a Model DG834GT?-Mike)
It's a WGT624
however it requires the compatible Netgear PCI or PC cards to reach those speeds. But my Macbook is hitting those speeds... interesting...
I think the 108 mbps is some sort of compression that each of the different manufactures use, but it works with my netgear just fine.
-Katana "

There was a note earlier this year about 802.11a support in the intel based Macs, but that's still 54mbps.
Another MacBook Pro owner running Win XP with a D-Link DGL-4300 replied:

" MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz + 7200RPM HDD running Windows XP SP2 (via BootCamp) is reporting a 108Mbps connection to my D-Link DGL-4300 wireless gaming router.
I thought it was a fluke, but when I saw your post on a user's 108Mbps router connection, I thought I'd let you know.
-J "

" I read about Macbook Pro owners noting 108Mbps compatability with their 108Mbps routers.. I think i might have an explanation?
I noticed when i booted into XP on my MacbookPro that it actually showed it as an "Atheros" chipset and not Intel Pro Wireless or whateve ... perhaps Intel just licenses chips from Atheros for their Centrino chipsets?
Anyway, both the Netgear and D-Link routers mentioned previously use an Atheros chip, so perhaps that's why it's allowing the higher proprietary speed?
-Vasu "

Yes. BTW- the FAQ's Networking section has an item from fall 2004 on Atheros chipset drivers for OS X from orangeware and sourceforge (free/open source) but not sure if they've been updated for Tiger.

More notes on Reboot on Wake from Sleep with Workstation VM running
Friday an update to the page of User Reports/Tips/Tests of Parallels Workstation 2.1b (VM for running other OS's in a window on Intel CPU Macs) from a new iMac owner mentioned if the VM was left running when the system went to sleep, on wake it would reboot. Two other readers confirmed the same thing on their MacBook Pros:

"Yep, I see exactly the same bug using a Macbook Pro and Parallel Workstation...
if the virtual machine is running when the laptop goes to sleep, when you open the lid it doesn't automatically wake up... and if you press a key to wake it up, it will reboot the machine.
-Matt "

"I had the same experience with my dual core MacBook Pro. It restarted when it should have just awakened when VM was running.
-Jeremy "

Otherwise most feedback was postive on this software although performance isn't as good (especially in graphics) as running Windows natively using bootcamp. (I've gotten more reports over the weekend and will update the page in the next day or so.)

Ars article on Apple BootCamp
" Ars Technica has published an article on our experiences using Boot Camp to run Windows on a Mac. Curious about Boot Camp? We were. Ars spent some time using Windows XP and trying a couple of other operating systems on Intel Macs (including Windows Media Center Edition), and we're here to tell you what we've learned in the process.
The various hardware differences make what would hopefully be an uneventful experience a little quirkier on some machines (especially the MacBook Pro), but overall, WindowsXP is mostly how one would expect it to be. Most Mac users who are now dual-booting their Macintel machines don't intend on "switching" over (or back) to Windows, but have installed it because they want to play their favorite games or due to work demands. "

There's a previous page here with Apple BootCamp User reports and Tips.

MTR Fund for Intel CPU Mini (for Univ. Binary development)
(from a reader mail this weekend)

"There's a fund drive to get the developer of MTR (for DVD Backup) a Mac Mini Solo, so he can complete work on the Universal Binary Version of MTR v3.0. The developer lives in Switzerland, the land of snow and beautiful mountains, where the cost of the Solo is $713(US) at the Apple Store in Geneva. He's been working "blind" on the Univ. binary of MTR without an Intel Mac, and says he could really use a "cheepy Intel Mac Mini," as he puts it.

"I can't fix Intel issues (and optimize code for the future) without an Intel Mac. So it's a benefit for the future. I have not done a bad job without the kit, but life (as a developer) would be better with one," he recently wrote. MTR Betas v3.0 R-13(a,b,c & d) were released to testers at the ripdifferent web site in the past week. The last full release of MTR was v2.6.6, more than a year ago, so the application is due for an update for both PPC and Intel Macs.

All donations toward the Intel Mac Mini Solo are welcome, however because of PayPal fees, and exchange commissions to Swiss Francs, gifts of $20 or more are preferred. Please donate using PayPal. Use only "Mac Mini Fund" for the subject, leave the message area blank, and choose "Service" for type of transaction. The PayPal account to use for contributions is:
the-fluff@freesurf.ch

Of course donators will receive the URLs to download the latest Beta versions of MTR, and should save the link to facilitate acquiring future Beta versions, and the final releases of MTR v3.0 for PPC and Intel Macs. We'll keep everyone posted with a tally of the money collected, and when the $713(US) goal is reached donations will be no longer be accepted."
