Report on LG GGW-H20L Blu-Ray and Toast 9.0.2 (problems)
From a reader mail - some previous issues with Toast 8.x and this LG (SATA) drive also in the past , including drive db reports here and apparently still a problem w/Toast v9. (Updated with replies/notes from other readers/Toast users.)

" I installed an LG model HL-DT-ST BD-RE GGW-H20L drive into the upper slot of the optical drive bay (SATA). CD-R, DVD-R, and BD-RE burns work from the finder. However Toast 9.0.2 will hang if you attempt to burn a BD-RE disk in the drive.
(Matthew had said his Macbook's DVD burner had Toast 9.0.2 problems also (hanging at 99% complete repeatedly he said - he's given up on Toast 9 for now) - so I asked this LG BR owner if Toast burn hang was immediate or not. BTW - there's also drive database reports on this same LG burner having problems with Toast 8.x in the past using onboard SATA (USB or FW adapter users fared better - and an Expresscard SATA owner (MacBook Pro) wrote he used the previous LG SATA model (GGW-H10N) OK with that setup (Jan 2008 report).-Mike)
So far with Toast 9.0.2 I'm unable to burn BD-RE disks. The program would hang as soon as it started to write to the disk. I would get an error stating the hardware had under gone a reset. Note: I was able to burn to a BD-RE from the Finder, so It seems the issue is with Toast. (see below for more notes/replies on this.-Mike)

I had no issues burning to single or dual layer dvd disks. I have not tried (as of yet) a CD-R.
Lightscribe works and was able to print on a dvd with this support (I installed http://download.lightscribe.com/ls/lightscribe_1.12.37.1.pkg.tar). Have not tested to see if it boots from the drive as my second drive does, so I'm not to concerned about it.
Finder did report an error in the verification of the disk (BD-RE). However running a movie (mpeg4 h.264) that was burned to the disk seemed okay.
-Robert
My system Configuration is
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz (dual CPUs)
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
Memory: 10 GB
Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05
SMC Version: 1.25f4"

The Jan 2nd, 2008 news page here had notes from an USB adapted (USB/SATA adapter) LG GGW-H20L user and a reader using it in an ext. case with a FW800/USB 2.0 to SATA bridge board. I knew there had been problem reports in the past on this LG drive and Toast 8.x (at least internal SATA interface use) going back to last fall when that LG drive was first introduced.
Another LG GGW-H20L replied today he's using it OK with a SATA to FW bridge board ext. case:

" Regarding your Report on the LG GGW-H20L today:
This drive will not work properly via the SATA interface with Toast. Many people are reporting this on Roxio's forum.

Using a SATA to USB or SATA to Firewire adapter seems to work fine (I'm using the latter in an external case).
- Ron"

A Panasonic SW-5583 (SATA) drive owner wrote he's had no problems with Toast 8 or 9:

"I've had no problems burning a BD-REs on a Mac Pro 8-Core 3.0 GHz with 16 GB Ram under Toast 8 & now v9. I am using Encore DVD to author and make the dic image and burning with Toast. I use the Panasonic Drive SW-5583 connected to a spare SATA port on the logic board and threaded up to the Optical drive bays. Maybe the Toast issue is specific to LG drives. I also am using Panasonic branded BD-RE and BD-R discs.
Warren"

When Toast 8 was first intro'd last year the Panasonic SW-5582 (IDE/PATA) was noted as a preferred BR drive at that time.

Another frustrated X1900XT owner (overheating/artifacts, etc.)
" Sending you my personal situation about ATI X1900 overheating... I don't wan't to be a troublemaker but users have to know those cards are definitly bad stuff for us.
I read lots of topics about X1900XT overheating, Happy that i'm not alone but... I was a "hard gamer" of wow until december 2007 when i discovered that it was my GPU which causes my mac crashes. In the beginning there was artifacts, of course, I've cleaned up the card (fins clog with dust) many times, seems to work better then, crashes came. Installed smcfancontrol (to boost fan speeds), works fine at 1000rpm. in December it crashed even at 1800rpm. forced to stop Warcraft (not a bad thing if i reconsider). (one reader in the past used a WoW FPS Cap - see link below-Mike) Too bad i was 1month late for warranty.
Playing EvE in bootcamp with AtiTrayTools and boosted GPU fan directly. For Falcon 4, it was unecessary to turn speakers on, X1900 doing same noise :)

Installed AcceleroX2 in Feb. - silent, but not better. Can't play on Mac. I've just stopped playin', no worries. Today, full speed fan in windows doesn't allow me to play "normally". On Mac (OS X), I have artifacts in the Finder (doing nothing) and great lines with videos (SD/HD). I'm an editor, and i know my days are numbered :)
This card is crap, so don't be happy with it in installing cooling systems, sooner or later, X1900 models will fail at anytime like mine. (Did I mention it crashes during h264 encoding today?) (CPU KP or GPU related?-Mike)
Just pray apple recognizes the problem officially. Looking for a 8800GT (current Mac 8800GT requires PCIe 2.0 slot 2008 Mac Pros - there was a petition to try and get apple to offer one compat. with previous Mac Pros.)
PS : I've 4HDD raid 0 in pci bay, it's a bit warm inside. AcceleroX2 vents air inside, going directly on bay 3/4. Disk 4 at 45-53°C ... (some coolers vent to the outside - such as the Thermaltake ATI) In Windows where I can see GPU temp, it began to crash at 82°C, then 77°C... last time I played it crashed at 64°C, running at 55°C idle...
Thanks, Erwan
Hardware type : Macpro1.1 2.6GHz, 4 Hard Drives in raid0 mode, X1900XT w/ AccX2 cooler and Two 23" Cinema Displays"

There's been quite a few X1900 owners over the years noting artifacts/overheating, etc. (although not all have). Here's some links to previous articles on the X1900 XT (cooler swaps, firmware update feedback, notes/tips, etc.) from the Video topics/Graphics card/Coolers section here:
