PB G3 Wallstreet IBM 20GB HD Upgrade Install and Performance Tests:
This weekend I upgraded my PB G3 Wallstreet hard drive using an IBM Travelstar 20GB drive w/2MB cache. Early this morning I finished an article detailing the install and before/after performance tests. Check it out.

More Reader Reports on Voodoo5 Conflicts:
The latest reader reports from owners of Voodoo5 cards on software/extension conflicts.
"Hi Mike,
Umax S900 with Sonnet G3 466. Dual monitor set up.

The conflict I have noticed was with the IMS Twin Turbo and the V5. (The company is now IX MICRO). [Note: they went out of business last year-Mike] The twin turbo 8 Meg 2d card is admittedly long in the tooth, but is still a fine card with good 2d performance and a slim set of drivers (version 4.0.6 being the last one). Unfortunately the Twin Turbo control panel and the Voodoo 5 don't seem to cooperate. Randomly the computer will boot into 640x480 for the IMS and seem to have forgotten all the settings in Monitors and control panels. This hadn't happened before with any of the other 4 video cards I have had in here with the Twin Turbo.

Though in fairness to 3dfx, perhaps this is an issue with where the Twin Turbo is located in the PCI slots. I seem to recall it demanding a priority slot to work properly and once I had the V5 the Twin Turbo was relegated to the second bank of PCI slots (more clearance for the fans). Is anyone running the V5 happily with a Twin Turbo?

I have since pulled an old ATI 2d/3d video card out of the drawer, and it seems to be working fine as second monitor (but its 2d isn't nearly as crisp as the Twin Turbo). I disabled the ATI 3d acceleration extension to minimize the possibility of conflict, and so far no problems.

I love the Voodoo 5, just wish that second chip worked.
Ashby"

As noted on the S900 Tips (see systems page for link) a year or so ago, many cards (including video cards and SCSI cards) perform best (or must be) in the one of the top 2 PCI slots on the S900.

" hi Mike-
Voodoo 5 with latest drivers seems to be causing some (what else) visual distortions to type faces in Quark 4.11. The font(s) appear to randomly, in a section/square area of a document; change sizes (larger) several pt. sizes- and/or condense, as if horizontal scaling were applied. Zooming in or out brings the type back to normal. Annoying-but I've had no crashes--and I am using an upgraded 9600-which I know is not supported by 3dfx--but neither were my 2 other Voodoo 3 cards with beta drivers.

Anyway, my G4mp is due to arrive today-and I'll see if this problem persists.
frank "

" Well I put a V5 in my G4 MP 500 and immediately started having menu bar corruption problems with the G4. I removed the AliasMenu 2.2 extension, which has always worked fine on my 9500, and the problem went away.

Now if I can just figure out how to keep Netscape from crashing...

Regards from Charlottesville,
Norman Beam "

" Hey Mike -
not sure if this is a 'conflict' in terms of extensions, but an odd occurence regardless... the Voodoo5 seems to work very well, especially w/ Diablo2 :-) Also seems great w/ Freehand & Photoshop...

However, since installing the card my USB laser printer no longer works!
Here's my system specs:

Mac OS 9.04 Beige G3minitower(466mhz upgrade); 512MB Ram
slot 3 - OrangeMicroUSB/Firewire PCI card
Brother MFC-8300 attached
slot 2 - empty
slot 1 - 3dfxVoodoo5 video card

Checked Apple System Profiler under 'volumes' - USB bus says "no devices detected" under USB activity, I got this message:

20.577: Expert - Initializing disk based USB Expert 1.4.1
21.170: [123456789]: UIM - UIMEndpointDelete: Could not find

Does this make any sense?
What is "Native Power Mgr Lib" related to?

My problem is that the printer no longer shows up in the chooser - which is no surprise since it doesn't appear on the USB bus... I've tried switching the cards around to different slot combos, re-installing drivers, etc. No help... I'd heard somewhere about conflicts w/Firewire/USB combo cards - Could the extra power req. on the Voodoo be screwing up the USB somehow??!? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks -
Adrian Douglas "

I asked Adrian to disable the Voodoo5 control panel and extensions to see if the problem persisted.

BTW - with the original 1.0 drivers at least, a friend noted 'halos' when using the paintbrush in Photoshop 5.5 (not present in ImageReady).

This isn't an extensions issue, but a reader noted a monitor sleep problem:

" I have had a V5 5500 PCI installed in my beige G3 desktop Rev A, Powerlogix 466/233 processor, Maxtor Ultra ATA66 20GB hard drive (thanks, Mike!) for a week or so. I previously had a Voodoo 3 3000 PCI card running the beta twelve drivers.

First of all, I haven't had any system or extension conflicts (0S 8.6). I have more than a few Netscape 4.71 crashes but this has not changed.

My only problem, also reported by others, is that my Sony 17" monitor won't sleep-when it's time to sleep, the powersaving light comes on but the power light stays on, the screen goes dark, and every few minutes the blue "resolution not supported" warning box flashes on and off. This is annoying since I have to shut down where I would normally sleep, but on the other hand my boot time with the new hard drive is about 1/2 of the old one, so it's still kinda fun to watch it restart :-).

The images in Unreal Tournament are great! I play with FSAA on and everything is much smoother. 2D looks better, as well. Overall I am very satisfied, but wish I had a better understanding of the monitor sleep issue-guess I don't know how "sleep" works to begin with, so I don't know how to begin attacking the problem.
James N. "

Although I suspect he does, I asked James if he had the 1.01 driver update/1.31 ROM installed which solved some monitor issues but may not fix this particular one.

More Overclocker Feedback on Linux Compiles:
As noted in Friday's news, a reader reported errors compiling Linux apps on his overclocked Mac. Another reader reported no errors with his overclocked G3:

" hi mike,
i just read about the linux compile errors on overclocked macOS. i am running a B&W G3 300 overclocked to 400 MHZ for 1 year now. tec. details are:

Cpu: G3 300mhz oc to 400mhz
Cpu-Version: 2.2
Temp.: 39C. (min.) 43C. (max)

i have os x server installed on this mac. i did a lot of compiles with os x server ...no problem so far. never, even the biggest did compile fine.

i also installed suse linux ppc (2 weeks ago now)...i didnt compile much yet (1-2 app‘s i think) but had no problems so far.

i will try something big in the next time...lets see that happens.
greetings
jens"

I welcome other Linux compiler reports from overclocked CPU owners. Please include your system/CPU details (better yet, post an entry in the CPU review database).

Photos of G4 Cube Disassembled:
Michiro Isobe posted a link to a Japanese site which has photos of the motherboard, CPU module and more from a disassembled G4 Cube system. The CPU module appears identical to the G4/AGP tower model (aka Sawtooth). The huge heatsink should be adequate for even dual G4 processors.

More Reader Feedback on Voodoo5 Driver Conflicts:
A reader reported problems with Palm Desktop and Via Voice after installing a new Voodoo5. If anyone else can confirm this please let me know. The reader theorized that like Symantech's Disklight (noted last week as a problem), these extensions also use the menu bar, which may be a common thread. I've updated the compatibility info on my Voodoo5 review summary page with this info.
If you have other conflicts to report, please contact me with specifics.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
