| Interarchy FTP Client Feedback: |
| (Update: Interarchy is NOT free but shareware and costs $50 for single user license.) A reader notes there's a new, improved version of the popular Anarchie FTP client available:
"
Mike, just wanted to pass the word that Interarchy 3.8 , previously Anarchie,is now out and available for download. I have always used Anarchie, I consider it the best ftp program out there, and this one is much better than the previous version. Anyway, here is the url ( all the other ones provided were extremely slow):
ftp://ftp.interarchy.com/interarchy.hqx. (3.9MB download) Anyway, try it out if you get a chance, I think you will be impressed. Keep in mind, this is a Macintosh-only program, no PC version available, and its free. [It's actually shareware as noted above-Mike]

| G4 Cube w/IBM 75GB Drive Upgrade: |
(Update - in 2001 I reviewed a Maxtor 100GB drive in a G4 Cube.) One of today's Mac Drive Compatibility Database entries included a report from a G4 Cube owner that replaced the original drive with an IBM 75GXP 75GB model:
"
Simply amazing. Booted off the Software Restore CD, and Apple's Drive Setup recognized the disk as being "initialize-able." Made 5 HFS+ partitions, the entire disk was finished in about 30 seconds.
Did FWB benchmarks on 1st and last partitions. 1st partition (I'm assuming outer ring?) recorded 49 MB/sec sustained read, and 57(!!) MB/sec sustained write. Last partition recorded only 27MB/sec sustained read, but maintained the 57MB/sec sustained write.
Either way, it still whooped on my old 9600 running two Quantum 18GB 7200 rpm drives in a RAID 0 configuration. Sad...

"
I've mailed Aaron to ask if he can test with ATTO's Tools benchmark and what rev of FWB Benchtest he used. (His write rates seem too high to be accurate.) |

| Reader Comment on Toshiba DVD Drive and Linux CD: |
| Although I had great results with a Toshiba SM-1212 DVD ROM drive in my Beige G3 (plug and play - see the review), this reader notes a problem reading Unix partitions:
"
Mike -
just an FYI that I haven't seen anywhere else ...
I installed a Toshiba SD-M1212 in my Biege G3 a while back and it has
worked flawlessly - excpet for one thing. It cannot read Unix
partitions. I first found this out with OSX PR4 and just recently with
LinuxPPC 2000. In both cases I was unable to install the OS due to
errors trying to read the Unix files on both discs. It may be a Unix
driver issue since in both cases the errors occurred in the Unix/Linux
environment - not the MacOS envrinment. Using my Imation CD-R instead
allowed me to complete both installs.

| Reader Tip on Logic Audio Freezes: |
| Chris Vallejo sent an update for this CPU review entry noting the fix for his Logic Audio problems with his Newer Tech G4/350 in a 7300/180 was deinterleaving RAM.
"
Hi Mike, ...
I posted an upgrade report in your database, stating problems of freezing when running Logic 4.5. I read your articles on memory, and de-interleaved it - presto! No more freezing.
Just thought I'd let you know - I'd give it a 10/10 now.
"
I try to avoid de-interleaving RAM as it costs performance in some apps as noted at the past interleaved RAM article.
