| Info on Voodoo5 1.02 Drivers/Fixes was Hoax: |
| As I feared, apparently the post on Voodoo5 1.02 drivers due soon was someone posting under Bryan Speece's name again. The thread from their 3dfxgamers.com message board has been removed now. (The real) Bryan Speece said to disregard any post you see using his name at the 3dfxgamers message board until further notice. |

| PowerLogix Blue Chip PB Upgrade Availability: |
| Several readers have asked about the status of the Powerlogix PB G3 CPU Upgrades after reading my Newer Tech PB G3/466 upgrade review. Reader Bob Friede reported that Outpost.com informed him his Blue Chip order is expected to ship on Oct. 15th. PowerLogix told me this morning that these upgrades are in production now, but no firm date was mentioned as far as retail availability. (I've asked again for an estimated date.)
The Blue Chip upgrade doesn't require returning your old CPU module which is a plus, and for owners of cacheless PB G3/233s, it's the only 3rd party CPU upgrade option. I hope to have a review sample in the future to test for reliability and performance. [*Update* in January 2001 I posted a review of the Bluechip G3/500 tested in my PB G3 wallstreet. The CPU ratings database also has reports from owners of the Bluechip upgrades.]

| Diskwarrior Overlapped File Repair Story: |
| Last week I commented on a PB disk crash that resulted in over 5000 overlapped files (cross-linked files) which Diskwarrior spent over 14 hours (and still working) attempting to repair. I ended up aborting Diskwarrior and reformating the drive since I was under a review deadline and had no idea how long it would take to complete. This reader's Diskwarrior repair story however has to be a world record as far as repair time - 70 hours - but has a happy ending. (Stories like these are good reminders to back up often)

"
Hi Mike!
Saw your post about Diskwarrior and overlapped files the other day, and
finally have a chance to share my experience with the same problem.
Here's the dialog between me and Jorg at Alsoft:
Question_or_Problem:
Disk Warrior has been running 13 hours now, and has found 3986
overlapped files so far. Any idea if it's worth continuing the run?
(My teenaged son was on my machine, screwed something up, then tried to
fix it with an old Norton Utilities version 4 CD). Internal is
unbootable; Finder says it "cannot be found."
--Mark
Mac OS Version: Mac OS 8.6
Mac Model: G3 blue+white
Mac Processor: G3 (PPC 750)
Mac RAM: 256
(Alsoft Comments)
Whether you continue to allow DiskWarrior to run or not is up to you. It
will eventually finish the job and give you back a working directory. If
you need the computer right now and all the files are backed up then you
may want to stop the process. Remember if you stop it and then decide to
restart DiskWarrior it will take another thirteen hours to get back to
this point. If all the files are backed up it would be more efficient to
reformat the disk and restore the files.
If you decide to continue on what will happen is that DiskWarrior will
give you a report. At this time you can look at a preview disk and if
you have the capability you can back up the files from here. If you go
on to replace the directory what will happen is that DiskWarrior will
separate the overlapped files. Let's say file a and file b are
overlapped, DiskWarrior will copy file b to another spot on the disk.
With 3986 files that could fill up the disk. At that point you will have
a working disk and you can most likely restart the computer from the
disk but there will still be overlapped files. If this occurs copy some
of the files off the disk then trash those files and run DiskWarrior
again to allow it to finish unoverlapping the files.
(Jorg of Alsoft)
(Mark's comments later-Mike)
...
Disk Warrior ran 70 hours and then it fixed every damn thing!!!
Actually, it blew off while repairing the overlapped files after
replacing the directory, but I found an alias in Damaged Items that was
2GB in size, trashed that, reran DW, and it adjusted disk space used to
the correct 5.5 GB of 6GB disk, pretty much ignored the overlapped files
thing, and finished in just a few minutes.
I'm a very happy camper, especially since the boy finally admitted that
he'd run Norton 4 not just once--but SIX Times!
Thanks again for your help, especially the sentence: "It will eventually
finish the job and give you back a working directory." There were many
times between 11:21 p.m. Thursday and approximately 9 p.m. Sunday, when
as I watched the "overlapped files" count slowly rise through the
thousands to a final count of 10,756, that only your words and a
stubborn disposition kept me from just reformatting the drive.
--Mark"
I've had Diskwarrior save my bacon many times, but it never took more than a few minutes until the Powerbook HD was trashed. I consider it one of the 'must-have' Mac disk utilities.

| SCSI ORB Drive Termination Comments: |
| After a reader reported problems with an Ultra SCSI ORB drive earlier in the week (in the Drive Compatibility Database), another owner sent a note that problems may be due to termination:
"
Mike:
A comment regarding Debra Dnahouraii's Orb problems: it sounds
suspiciously like faulty termination. You can't just simply trust
that the built-in termination works properly.
In my case (Oct. '99 SCSI Orb), the drive would not operate at the
end of a chain w/other devices, and when connected alone, would
produce numerous disk errors.
I then attached an external active terminator, and the drive has
worked properly since. Disks which had previously produced errors
now work fine.
My conclusion is that the Orb SCSI termination is faulty, and you
should presume that it has none, and use your own external
termination.
Sean Collins "
Something that occurred to me is I wonder if that Mac model (6500/300) supplies terminator power to the bus (not sure if the drive does) but if not that would only make matters worse I think. There's an older page here with SCSI ORB drive owner comments from last year.
