Reader Code Red Worm Tip for Cisco DSL Modem/Routers:
" Hey Mike,
I thought I would see if you wanted to post a helpful note to any mac user with DSL using the Cisco 675 modem/router. I found out today that the 675 is prone to attacks by the code red virus and have been losing my internet on and off for two days now (unplugging and replugging in the modem to restablish connection).
I talked to my isp today and found the fix for such problems. At the "#cbos" prompt you are to type three commands:

    set web disable (<return>)
    write (<return>)
    reboot (<return>)

(<return>) being hitting the return key.

This can be done either through telneting into the modem or through the management port. Maybe this can help some other people using Qwest DSL and having the same problem.
Aaron "

(Note - Another reader noted that you should set the port to other than 80 also, and check to see if you're running v2.4.2 of the CBOS code which is flash upgradeable.)
This has been added to the FAQ's networking section here also.

Heavy Metal FAAK2 1.02C Update:
While at Versiontracker searching for a SCSI card updater for the post above, I saw they have a 1.02C update to FAAK2 listed here. Improvements were listed as:

  • Redesigned MP3 decompression buffers for much better speed and stability.
  • Sound mixing performance has been improved.
  • Increased sound mixahead to reduce sound skipping, especially on low-end machines.
  • Increased free memory requirements to improve stability during level loading and eliminate texture white-out. You may need to increase your computer's virtual memory

One reader noted there that it did not solve the chainsaw sword bug, which is surprising since that's a very old bug that's commonly known. There was a previous unofficial update to fix the chainsaw sword bug at this page.

Report of new 7450 CPU Revision from G4/867 Owner:

Andrew sent a screenshot from our PPCChecker utility ran on his new G4/867 Quicksilver system that shows an "unknown revision" of the 7450. Therefore it's a later revision than the 2.0 CPUs that were noted here in G4/733 Digital Audio and Quicksilver models. I assume from the PVR number it's a 2.1 (or 2.01) stepping (revision), which may address some of the errata noted with the 2.0 CPU.

Two Sources for Retail Pioneer SuperDrive under $610:
One of this weekend's Drive Database reports included a note that had the drive listed for $608.49 and a forum post this weekend noted jazztechnology had it for $601. (Prices may change over time of course.) [NOTE: These sale prices were checked the day posted - but later prices were higher at each of the dealers linked. I've seen this over and over with this drive - where readers noted a low price one day, but checking the source later showed prices were higher.)
The retail drives come only with PC software of course, so for Mac use you'd need iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, or Toast 5. Originally the drive sold for about $800 and I wonder what the price will be by Xmas. (Hopefully under $500.)
Esbuy also lists the new Panasonic DVD-R/DVD RAM drive (LF-311) for $749, but I don't think that drive is supported by iDVD or DVD Studio Pro (not sure on Toast 5).
