WarBirds III 081501 Update:
I'm behind the curve due to personal matters here but there was a 081501 update to Warbirds III that fixes a several bugs and adds mouse control like in Warbirds II.

Code changes in WarBirds III version 08.15.01

  • Ack toughness bug fixed.
  • Ack weenies getting most of the kills fixed.
  • Ground Vehicle/buff crash fixed.
  • Changing gun positions now doesn't reset external view parameters.
  • URL to squad page corrected.
  • Arena selection dropdown menu changed to a list box.
  • Otto will now not move the main gun barrel when guns are on safe.
  • WarBirds III now has mouse control like in WarBirds 2.xx.
Note: You need to go into the input mapper and map this to a key if you are installing the Updater patch. The key will be automatically mapped to Alt + M if you are installing the full version to a clean directory.

Get it using the update link at the main Warbirds III site. (Remember if you own an Nvidia card you need to change the memory allocation of the game to 300MB.)

No WideScreen Mode Support of Sony FW900 w/GeForce2MX (1049 rom)?
Although a previous reader with a Sony W900 (earlier non-flat tube model) noted it did support widescreen modes (see this page w/resolution listings), a reader with the FW900 (flat screen) model and a new GeForce2MX card with the same firmware version noted otherwise:

" Hello Mike,
I have the "resolution problem" with the Sony FW900 and the Geforce card from the new Quicksilver G4/733 and G4/867 (german MacOS9.2). The firmware of the card is the 1049 noticed from Danny, Card revision 161 and D1-2.2 Nvidia driver.

I test the VGA Cable with and without the Sony adapter and a R-G-B-HD-HV cable. The resolution still be a 4 x 3 format. The 1600 x 1024 or the 1920 x 1080 resolution aren't possible, SwitchRes can't help...

Did you have a confirmation from a reader for the resolution issue of the GF2MX and FW900?
Thank you very much!
Best regards from Germany!
Yann Borg"

This is the only FW900 report I've had with the new MX card firmware. If utilities like Griffin's Superres (free, similar to shareware Switchres) or ForceDDC don't help, I don't know what to suggest. I asked to make sure he had "All" resolutions selected in the Monitors Control Panel.

Dual G4/800 Photos of CPU/Heatsink, iMovie2 Performance Tests:
An owner of a Dual G4/800 sent some photos of the motherboard and (huge) CPU/heatsink as well as some test results using the iMovie2 export test I use in my reviews. See this page for details and photos.

Reader Reports OS 9.2.1 Installed on New G4:
Although OS 9.2 is commonly known to be installed on all the new G4s (one reader noted OS 9.2 on a new iBook), a reader noted his new G4 tower had OS 9.2.1:

" I don't know if anyone's mentioned this to you, but I just got a silver G4 (8/15) and it came with and booted into Mac OS 9.2.1, a newer version than I'd seen anywhere else (even the Glendale Apple store). The Mac OS Rom file is version 8.4, and Carbon is at 1.4.
I've included a screen shot, if you're interested.

I emailed a Creative contact asking if there was any Mac version of this card planned, but have not seen a reply yet. (I've not been able to get email sent to my cable modem email account for two days, which might be a factor.)

Anyone Installed OS X on iMac w/Newer Tech G4 CPU Upgrade?
A reader asked about experiences from any iMac owners that installed the Newer Tech G4/433 upgrade. Newer Tech claimed it was OS X compatible last year, but I've had no reports that I remember from owners of the G4 Newer Tech iMac upgrade running the retail version of OS X. (I reviewed the iMac G4/433 upgrade last summer (before OS X was released).

One iMac owner with a mezzanine slot card noted that a firmware update for the iMac (required for OS 9.1?) disabled the mezzanine slot, but I've not had time to personally verify that (to see if OS 9.1 installs with my existing iMac rev A's firmware version.)

I'd welcome any reports from iMac owners with the G4/433 Newer Tech upgrade if they've installed OS X. Email me with details if you've done this on your G4 upgraded iMac. (The G4 upgrades were not made in large volumes and they are almost impossible to find now.)

Comments on Issues with Different Versions of CompUSA Combo Firewire/USB Card:
There was some previous comments on two different versions of the CompUSA (store brand) Firewire/USB card in the past here. A reader sent a note about problems seen with one version:

" Mike,
I bought a CompUSA combo Firewire/USB card about 2 months ago, based on a favorable report on your site. That card has worked beautifully in my home machine (a 9600), so I bought another one about 2 weeks ago for an 8600. I just got around to installing it tonight, and noticed right away that it didn't look like the first card. For one thing, the first one had a power connector, and the new one does not.

Unfortunately, the new one also does not work. The 8600 crashed like mad with the card installed. I then tried it in a 7500, and got even worse results, with text under drive icons disappearing and other ugly video artifacts. The bad symptoms went away as soon as I pulled the card.

There's no indication on the packaging that CompUSA is using a different card. But the new one seems to be a real dog, at least in a Mac. And of course it's now too late to return it.

[she later wrote]
The one that works comes in a box that shows a card with a 4-pin power connector at the top of the card. This morning I took a look at the box for card that does not work, and indeed the picture on the box is different: it shows a card with NO power connector. I wish I'd noticed sooner.

Anyone still looking for a CompUSA card should check the picture on the box.
The bad one is SKU#280284. This may be the same as the other, can't remember.

Just wanted to pass this along, as a heads-up to anyone else who's tempted to buy one. Unless they get lucky and get the card with the power connector, it probably isn't going to work.
Kathryn J."

I asked Kathryn for more info on the chips on the card of the version that worked and didn't. (To add to the Firewire/USB Combo Card Feedback page.)

Blast from the Past - News pages from 1, 2 and 3 years ago:
I've had several readers ask that I restore a news item that I used to call "Blast from the Past" where links to past news pages from a year, two years, etc. ago here are included in the daily news. (Sometimes these old pages are a bit embarrassing - and in many cases the offsite links may not work, and comments there were accurate on the date posted regarding upgrade availability, etc.)
