Using BootCD (freeware) to make 10.3.5/Techtool Pro 4.0.3 Boot CD
(from a reader mail - in reply to the post on TTPro 4.0.3 earlier today. Updated with more info)

" Here's a experience I'd like to share:
I found a very simple way to create a bootable (updated) TechTool 4 CD: I used the BootCD Utility (Freeware) (available from http://www.charlessoft.com/) to create a Disk-Image of my OS 10.3.5 Installation and with BootCD's ability to integrate Apps to the CD by simply selecting them while setting up your Disk-Image it was a charm.
This requires that TechTool is already installed. (and updated)
(Kathi later wrote)

When you start the Application, it asks for the size of the Image (e.g. 650MB) and then creates a "Emergency Boot Image" which includes a basic OsX with Finder, Harddisk-Utility, Terminal and such. In the next step you simply select one or more Applications you would like to put onto the Image and it automatically integrates it. After doing that, you quit BootCD and burn that Image with Harddisk- Utility. I am not sure it supports DVD's because i only have a CDRW- Drive.
I tried several other Tricks to update my TechTool 4 CD with OsX 10.3.5 but nothing worked except this.
(I asked if any problems were seen mounting the internal drives when booting from the BootCD made disc)
I have 2 internal Harddisks in my Quicksilver G4, the stock 60gig and a additional IBM 120gig, i didn't experience any Problems so far.

Another Note: I burned the CD-Image with my officially not supported Ricoh MP7125A (thanks to Patchburn II) via the Harddisk-Utility of OS X.
Cheers, Kathi "

The previous page of TTpro 4 feedback/tips had past reports on using CD images of the original disc and updating those (for TTPro 4.0x updates) but Kathi's tip sounds even better (updates the OS on the boot CD also).

Reader comments on Red Orchestra 3.0 Mod w/Mac UT2004 v3236
A reader replied to the earlier post on the Mac 3.0 installer of the Red Orchestra 3.0 (WWII Mod for UT2004):

" Hello, I read the news you posted about RO (Red Orchestra 3.0)
RO plays really nice on (Mac) UT v3236, the news about that 3270 is needed was mainly intended for windows version.
At this moment the ftp links worked perfect for when i tested them 2 minutes ago. (when I posted the mac 3.0 installer links earlier today the first FTP site was overloaded and the 2nd had a file not found error.)
thanks for the coverage
regards, petterf

Red Orchestra 3.0 Mod (w/Mac Installer) and WoW Stress Tests
Bluesnews notes that Fileplanet has a Subscriber only Red Orchestra 3.0 UT2004 mod download. However according to the http://redorchestramod.gameservers.net/ page, the 3.0 version requires UT2004 v3270 and the latest Mac version is v3236 (see later report above that Mac 3236 works) - But they do have a link to a download of the Mac Red Orchestra 3.0 installer (487.46MB).
In another "Fileplanet exclusive", Yahoo has a press release (dated yesterday) on Blizzard Partners with FilePlanet for World of Warcraft Stress Test Beta to 100,000+ Players. (Since it was posted yesterday there may be no slots left by now.)

TuneMax iPod case and Aux. Battery Combo
A reader sent a note that Tunewear has announced the TuneMax, which they call the "Ultimate Universal iPod Case Protector and Clip with Embedded Battery". They claim the battery adds 16 additional hours of runtime. I didn't see a price listed there and their online store didn't seem to have it listed yet.

Looking for Final Cut Pro 1.x
I realize this is a longshot now, but wondering if any readers know of anyone selling a (legit) copy of Final Cut Pro 1.x (or 2.x). I found one dealer selling an OEM (disc and S/N only) Final Cut Pro 1.2.5, but their price was about $490. (Much too high for me.) (Update - Thanks to all the readers that replied, including some very affordable FCP 1.2.x offers.)

Techtool Pro 4.0.3 Update (many fixes plus 9600XT, G4/7447 and G5/970FX support)
Although not listed at Micromat's downloads page yet, MU today has a download link for the TechTool Pro 4.0.3 Update. (BTW - have your TTPro 4 S/N handy a reader said - he didn't and had to email them for it.) Here's the changes listed for 4.0.3:

" Version 4.0.3:
  • Corrected reported issues with eDrive creation.
  • Corrected reported Directory Maintenance issue.
  • Corrected reported Finder Info issue.
  • Enhanced support for PowerPC G4 7447 testing and detection in Processor test.
  • Enhanced support for PowerPC G5 970FX testing and detection in Processor test.
  • Updated Video Memory test to detect Radeon 9800 XT.
  • Enhanced Optimization routines for more thorough pre-flight checks.
  • Allowing Directory Maintenance/Optimization on one volume at a time while booted from CD.
  • Added TechTool Pro 4 Help Italian localization.
  • Added Safari web browser to the eDrive volume.
  • Added dialogs for Data Recovery routine during scavenge routine.
  • Corrected localization issues for French version.
  • Global updates for new machines.

    Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later, TechTool Pro 4.0.x. "
  • Hopefully this will fix some of the problems readers noted in the past here with certain configurations. Despite Micromat's previous comments on making updated CDs for existing 4.0.x owners - see the reader reports on the Techtool Pro 4 feedback page for how they burned an updated CD using an image of their original CD. updated page includes notes on using BootCD (freeware) utility also.
If you install this update, let me know if it helps with any issues you had previously. (But as with any new/updated disk utility - it might be good to have an up-to-date backup using Carbon Copy Cloner for instance before doing repairs on a disk with it.)

Airport 4.0.1 Update (for Airport Express Users)
I don't own an Airport Express so it didn't show up in Software Updates here (using an Airport Extreme base) but several Airport Express owners wrote last night the Airport 4.0.1 update was available:

" About AirPort 4.0.1 for Mac
    What's New in this Version
    - Improvements to Profiles support in the AirPort Admin Utility
    - Improve handling of WEP keys with third-party access points "

You can also download the update at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport401formac.html (I've added this info to the previous page of Airport Express owner feedback/setup tips.)

M-Audio Transit (USB Audio) Reports page updated (w/OS 9 and OS X tests)
I've updated the page of M-Audio Transit owner reports with another long report from a reader using one in both OS 9 and OS X (10.3.4) Although he mentions a myriad of problems in OS 9 his OS X comments were more postitive than most in the past there. He mentioned using OS X driver version 1.5.7f1 from the CD, not the later drivers from M-Audio's site. The device firmware he had was also v1.00, a 1.01 firmware update was included with the 1.5.8f2 drivers earlier this year.)

PowerBook Owner's Guide to Sprint PCS PCcard setup
I've updated the previous page on Sprint PCS/Novatel PCcard Setup with an OS X user's guide to setting up a Novatel PCcard for wireless net access. (The first report there was from an OS 9 user.)

A total of 1446 people voted from a ballot of 62 of the most popular requests culled from the various FCP online forums and other sources. The results include hundreds of write-in requests. CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 3 new reports added this morning. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total 13,510 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports)

      Combo DVD-CDR Drives:
    • Exp. bay Sony CRX-830e (24x24x24x + 8x DVD-ROM) in (pismo) PowerBook G3 2000 (OS X 10.3)
(using Patchburn II for Panther iApps burn support.
Systems page, Powerbook section has articles from 2001 on expansion bay combo drive installs/swaps.)

      DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
    • IDE Sony DW-U50A in iBook 2002 (OS X)
(using Patchburn II for Panther iApps burn support.)

      Hard Drives:
    • Firewire Acomdata (actually Samsung HD inside) 120GB used w/B&W G3 (OS 9.2) (Listed under "other" brands, see report for notes on OS 9 issues)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
