| Bensch's Comments/Photos from Apple Paris Expo |
| I'm late posting this but Games Editor/Reviewer Bensch Blaser sent his comments and some photos from the Apple Expo.
I've gotten quite a few more overclocking reports/tests from users of ATIcellerator II and will add them to the feedback page tomorrow morning. Also thanks to all the readers that replied to the request for feedback on VirtualPC with WinXP/SP2. (I've held off on applying SP2 on a homebrew system, at least for now.)

| More reports on using ATIcellerator II Overclocking Utility (from Desktop and PowerBook owners) |
I've updated the page of ATIccelerator II feedback/reader reports with more desktop and powerbook owner reports on using the overclocking utility. Some reports include game or benchmark tests. Included in the latest updates are some that noted OC rates that are hard to believe (for instance from 9600 mobility owners) - although one 9600XT AGP card owner said despite selecting high settings he saw no performance gain. (Unless the test is CPU or memory bound, normally there should be some gain seen from a significant increase in GPU/Memory clocks if the rate change is actually working.)
Also as a FYI - one reader noted sometimes there are errors shown in the console log, noting no change had been made. See the reports page for more details.

| Running 3dfx Carmageddon 1 and 2 under OS X using MacGlide |
| (from a recent reader post)
"
With the 3dfx version of the original Carmageddon, and the OpenGlide project from sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/macglide/ home page, download from http://sourceforge.net/projects/macglide/download/-Mike)
I've got Carmageddon running perfectly (constant 60 fps) with hardware rendering in classic on my G5! I know there have been posts about this in the past, but the project is at the point now where it really does play perfectly. Used to be problems with menus, etc., but now it's perfect. Oh, did I mention it was perfect?
Actually, there's a tiny problem in the menus where the mouse seems to be bound where it thinks the lower right corner is really in the middle of the screen, but this is simply bypassed by using the arrow keys and enter to select options.
I missed this game!!
....I can only vouch for the performance on my dual 1.8
G5, though. Which is perfect.
(he later wrote regarding Carma2)
I've got carmageddon 2 lying around here somewhere. I'll stick it in and give it a twirl. Ha HAH!! It works!!
First, the good news. The game itself runs perfectly. I solid
hardware-assisted 60 FPS, I'm certain.
Second, the not-so-good news. It was a devil to get running. First, it
wouldn't recognize my CD! I figure it was an OS 9 thing, so I looked and managed to find an old no-CD-check patch that was circulating at the time. That fixed the CD recognition problem.
There are slight menu difficulties, but the options are all legible, and
once you set everything up and start the game, it's beautiful.
Don't forget, you'll have to run the 3dfx executable of Carmageddon 2
directly. Don't just run the main app.
Sweet! This library/extension rocks!

| CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility Database had 4 new reports added this morning. (Entries from Monday, entries today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total 13,521 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports)
DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
- Firewire (cased) Pioneer DVR-108 used w/Beige G3 (OS X 10.3)
(no native iApps burn support, so using Patchburn II)
- Firewire Plextor PX-504UF used w/G4 AGP (OS X 10.3)
(using Patchburn II for burn support)
- IDE LG 4120B (DL burner) in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
- IDE Sony DRU-700A (DL burner) in Dual G4 (OS X 10.3)
(no iApps burn support, so using Patchburn II for Panther iApps burn support. Errors with verifies he said.
Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers B&W G3 and G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
