ATI to release (retail) PCI-Express Radeon X1900 G5 Edition
I called an ATI contact at WWDC to ask if the new ATI Radeon X1900 XT graphics card kit (MA631Z/A) at the Apple store (kit priced at $499, est. 3-5 weeks to ship) would work in a PCI-Express based G5 Tower. (The Apple store kit page says it requires a Mac Pro.) I was told the X1900 XT kit card would -not- work in a PCI-e G5.
However he said that they would soon release a "X1900 G5 Edition" for PCI Express G5 towers. (equiv. to the PC X1900 GT card, less pipes than the X1900 XT for the Mac Pro tower).
The X1900 G5 edition was demoed at Siggraph in a PCI-e G5 he said and hopefully will be available at retail in a few weeks. He said the card is compatible with OS X 10.4.7 using the drivers included with card. (No official price yet, but I think it will be significantly less than the X1900 XT's Kit price.)

BTW - a Quad G5 owner with OEM Nvidia 7800GT card asked if it would work in a new Mac Pro tower. Nobody I know has a Mac Pro yet, but if anyone gets one and/or can comment on this let me know. (Update - one reader said it would not work, as Mac Pro graphics cards must be EFI compliant.)

Apple announces Mac Pro Towers (w/2 Xeon Dual Core CPUs, up to 3GHz)
Apple is showing the new Mac Pro (Towers) with Two 64-bit Dual-Core Intel Xeon CPUs at 2GHz, 2.66GHz or 3GHz, 1.33GHz, 64-bit dual independent frontside buses, fully buffered ECC memory (up to 256-bit wide), new Graphics card options (up to 4 cards), dual optical drive bays, 4 hard drive bays (SATA 3Gb/sec interfaces) and more. See the Specs page for full details.
The Performance page notes "Up to 1.4x faster" than a Quad 2.5GHz G5 in FCP rendering. (The Graphics page has FPS tests with Doom3 and Quake4.) They also have a Mac Pro Photo Gallery online. The Apple store today was overloaded (very slow to respond) but the "Suggested configuration" was:

Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon "Woodcrest" processors
4MB shared L2 cache per processor
    1.33GHz dual independent frontside buses
    1GB memory (667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory
    250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive1
    16x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    $2,499.00

Subtrack $300 for 2GHz CPUs, Add $800 for Two 3GHz CPUs. The Apple store lists these prices on graphics card options:

  • NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (single-link DVI/dual-link DVI)
  • 2 x NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (Add $150)
  • 3 x NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (Add $300)
  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (2 x dual-link DVI) (Add $350)
  • 4 x NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (Add $450)
  • NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB, Stereo 3D (2 x dual-link DVI) (Add $1650)

With a note "Selecting the ATI Radeon X1900 XT or NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 may delay the shipment of your Mac Pro." (default config showed 1-3 business days to ship as of appx 3PM Eastern today, but that may change depending on demand.)
