Price cut on OWC Mac Pro Memory
(from site sponsor OWC)

" We've been able to negotiate some better module costs with our volume growing and some of the initial production challenges being overcome. As we attain better cost economies, we always pass that on to our customers.
2GB Sets (1GB x 2) now start from just $495 vs. the original $559. Lower per module prices offered in the 4GB (1GB x 4), 6GB (1GB x 6), and 8GB (1GB x 8) kits too.

Apple cuts prices on ATI X1900 XT Upgrade Kit and CTO Option by $100
" Apple store has dropped the x1900 price on both the individual upgrade and the BTO option by $100. (Now $399 for Kit, $250 for BTO option from base 7300 card)
-Mike C. "

A reader also sent a note that his previous order was credited:

" Mike, I concur that Apple dropped my order price by $100. I have the BTO X1900XT option and it's reflected price drop.
However, ship date still listed as 9/12/06.
Thanks for the news posting!

Follow-up on Seagate 7200.10 Drives Low Write speeds
Yesterday's news had a Dual Core G5 owner's tests with a Raptor 150GB and Seagate 750GB (7200.10), noting much lower writes speeds than reads with the Seagate on the onboard SATA. Michael Bean of AMUG wrote in reply to my question on write performance with the Seagate 7200.10 drive with PCI SATA cards (vs onboard SATA):

" Dear Mike,
I saw your question today about the performance of the Seagate 7200.10 on a SATA host adapter. (i.e. was the low write performance seen with onboard SATA improved if using a PCI controller-Mike) Your readers may be interested to know that the 7200.10 does work properly on a SATA host adapter with read and write speeds of approximately 72MB/sec on a Quad or an original PowerMac G5 2.0GHz Dual. However, if you install that same 7200.10 as a non-RAID volume internally on a PowerMac G5 or a Mac Pro internal SATA bus the write speed is decreased by approximately 40% to 44MB/sec while the read speed stays at 72MB/sec. I have sent these details to Seagate and they have a PowerMac G5 available for testing this problem. There is no fix yet but I hope that one will eventually be developed. You can see reviews displaying the performance of the 7200.10 model used on a SATA host adapter at:

http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/wiebetech/tcs1/
Amazingly, (using PCI controller) the 7200.10 performs within 2MB/sec along the entire line from 750GB to 250GB.
