Apple releases AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002
There's an AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 for Mac (and Windows):
"About AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 for Mac
The AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 includes general fixes, compatibility updates, and security improvements for the following applications:
- AirPort Utility
- AirPort Disk Utility
- AirPort Base Station Agent
AirPort Utility v5.2.1 for Mac OS X 10.4.x or later software supports the
AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n, AirPort Extreme Base Station and
AirPort Express Base Station.
Requirements:
- Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later
- AirPort Utility 5.0 or later
- AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n"
If you find this update improves (or breaks) anything, let me know the details. (-Some- AE 802.11n base owners previously reported problems mounting some drives (like WD mybooks), although not all did.) Update - I've posted a page of Airport Base Update 2007-002 feedback
BTW: Although the Apple note on the update page says Airport Utility 5.x supports Airport Express and the (802.11g) Airport Extreme,
the update won't install if you didn't already install the software included with the newer 802.11N AE base. This came up back in March when the "2007-001" update was released. There's a workaround (extracting the v5 utility from the download pkg) in the March 30th news page - see
"Extracting new Airport Utility from 2007-001 Update for Macs it won't
install on". (I did that with the 2007-001 update download and the Airport Utility 5 worked fine with my 802.11g AE base.)
FYI: The Other News listing below also has some updated Airport base related Apple docs today.

iMovie 08 on G4 Macs
(Updated again w/Dual 1.25GHz G4 tower feedback)
In Friday's news post on workarounds for installing iMovie 6HD on systems w/o iLife 08 I asked if anyone had tried running iMovie 08 on a fast G4 (iMovie 08 requirements list a G5 or better). A reader sent a link to info on getting it installed, but said he's seen problems running it on his PowerBook G4 (although some other G4 users didn't):
"
iMovie 08 on G4
This guy has it to work on his G4.
http://www.teksanity.com/iMovie/iMovie_08_on_G4/Intro.html (Note - don't bother playing the movie there, it has nothing to do with how to install iMovie 08... See the links at the top of the page for info on installer check mods, downloading hexeditor (and Machonist) and mods to get it to run.-Mike)
I was able to install, patch, and run. However, when you start to use
it you get a kernel dump (Kernal Panic) and restart. I tried iMovie '08 on a
Powerbook G4 1.67GHz running OS X 10.4.10 with Quicktime 7.2. Also iLife '08 is installed.

Another PB G4 owner wrote:
"
I have it installed on a 1.5GHz PB G4 with 1 GB RAM. I used the workaround mentioned for iMovie 08 (Note: Pacifist also installs iMovie 08, from the .pkg).
I have no problems with KP's (kernel panics), or anything else, other than IM8 is quite slow. And the program behaves all wanky (i.e. I cannot get the cursor to change, as stated in Help, dragging it over the edge of a sound clip, to resize it). Not a great experience.
(After one reader last week said he had to delete old iDVD themes to prevent iDVD 08 quits I asked him if he'd seen any problems w/iDVD 08)
No trouble, but haven't pushed it yet. I have iDVD themes back to v 4, I think.

A Dual 1.25GHz G4 owner had no complaints:
"
I have the patched iMovie '08 running on my dual 1.25 powermac g4
with Radeon 9800 pro and I find the performance to be more than
acceptable. I was surprised at how well it runs, no problems at all.
Perhaps the graphics card makes a difference?
(I suspect the Dual CPUs with 2MB L3 each are a bigger benefit. (Compared to the PB G4's single CPU with no L3.)-Mike)
(I asked Ian about iDVD 08 also, to see if he'd had any problems with it quitting)
No problems so far, but I've only had a quick look at the new iDVD
and have not attempted to burn anything yet.
Regards, Ian
"
If anyone else has gotten iMovie 08 installed on an (unsupported) G4, let me know the details. (Some preferred iMovie 6 over iMovie v7/aka iMovie 08 though.)
BTW - I asked several other readers that had written last week regarding iMovie 08 and none said they had seen any iDVD 08 quit problems so far although they had just run the program to check out features, not burn a DVD yet. (Including some intel-cpu mac owners.)

Mac Pro owner notes on using new Aluminum Keyboard
"
Hi Mike, just a short note from Germany:
I have received my new aluminum keyboard a few days ago and connected it to the Mac Pro. It worked as expected right out of the box without applying any update. (I suspected basic function (less special keys) would work in any OS/without the apple software for it, but some readers running older macs/older OS's had asked about that-Mike)
Of course I couldn't use the special keys but in case somebody does NOT need them, the keyboard updater does not need to be applied.
(regarding Apple Keyboard Software Update 1.1)
As for the updater itself: When I hooked up my keyboard and tried to search for new updates, it did not find anything. However, yesterday evening, it suddenly appeared as online software update. Maybe Apple had some initial trouble with the updater (which would also explain why some people have posted different file sizes at first).
(I asked him if the keyboard came with a CD w/Keyboard software v1.0 on it. -Mike)
As for the German keyboard, I haven't found any CD-ROM inside the package, but since some have reported that a version 1.0 was included I am not sure if that was by mistake or if only the German keyboards didn't include the CD.
For now, I am extremly happy with the new aluminum keyboard, not only because it's very slim but also because I can write much faster now and the keys provide really nice "feedback".
Cheers from southern Germany

I had a couple readers (using 10.4.10) also say the keyboard software allows remapping some function keys on older keyboards (like F14-F16) but I've not tried that yet. I'm planning on getting one of the new Apple Alum. Keyboards soon to use with a 2003 G5 here.
BTW - PCworld's review of the iMac mentioned that due to the low profile, only one of the six USB flash drives they tried was thin enough to fit without raising one side of the keyboard.
