More info on 802.11n Express/34 cards
(reply to a post earlier this week, personally if I had a Macbook Pro rather than getting an Expresscard 802.11n adapter, I'd just swap in a natively compatible 802.11n Mini-PCIe card)

"Ref: 802.11n Express/34 cards
Mike, I've tracked down three models of this card: two are the RAlink chipset models, one is the Atheros. (Note: the Apple 802.11n capable Macbook/Macbook pros use Atheros AR5008 based Mini-PCIe cards, which have been swapped into earlier model Macbook/Pros, Minis, etc. by a LOT of readers since Feb.-Mike) According to the FCC F5D8071 is Atheros based, while F5D8071C and F5D8073 are RAlink cards. Notable, the F5D8073 card is marketed as N (sticker on the card, the box, etc), not N1.
As for the Atheros chipset models, they /do/ work in MacBook Pro models, if you have the right drivers (un)installed. I found that they worked fine in 802.11a/b/g mode with the standard airport drivers in 10.4.10 on a MacBook Pro CoreDuo, but froze the SantaRosa based Core2Duo. The SantaRosa MBP would hang when the card was inserted, but in some cases would enventually load and work. With some help, I tracked the issue to the IO80211Family.kext file, which on the CoreDuo machines lacked the AirPortEnabler.kext file that turns on the N functionality. Removing the enabler and the extensions caches enabled the card to work, with just a few hot-swap usability issues, but without the N support.

You can alternately force the N enabler to load at startup (either by using an rc.local script that calls kextload or manually editing the info.plists to add the OSBundleRequired Root string) and bypass the hang on load, and gain full a/b/g/n functionality. For some reason, the hang is only present when the kext loads dynamically.

The RAlink drivers (which are for PCI, PCMCIA or USB models) may work with the other cards, but you lose the ability to do 802.1x based authentication, or use the built-in airport configuration tools. If that isn't an issue, the card labeled with just the N would be the easy one to spot. Personally, I'd like to try D-Link's DWA-643 card in the future. The FCC page shows it has an Atheros chipset, and only a single revision. Hope all this helps. I had to chase some of the info down, and thought it might be useful. BTW, thanks for the site. I've been a reader for years.
