| iMac Core Duo owner notes on 2GHz Core2 Duo CPU Swap |
(from a reader mail today - many readers over the years have upgraded their Intel-based Mini's CPU. The intel-based iMacs also have a socketed CPU from day one but this is the first mail I recall on a reader swapping in a new CPU although I'm sure some have. However some have also sold the older model and pooled the upgrade $$$ towards a higher speed/better graphics equipped later model)
"iMac Core Duo 17" 1.83GHz
Upgrade: Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 2.00GHz, 667FSB, "Merom", Dual-Core, 4MB L2 Cache, FCPGA6 Socket M
I had this orig iMac with a failed logic board. When I got the new logic board and did the swap, I decided to put a new CPU in it too. Any 667MHz FSB Core 2 Duo would have worked; I put in the 2 GHz model, because that's what I could get, fairly cheaply. They make up to 2.33 GHz models with 667 MHz FSB, if you have $650 to spend! (the highest bin/speed parts have a big premium. Lower speeds are typically much less.)
I don't have any benchmarks - I just thought folks might like to know this is a fairly straightforward swap (as long as you are comfortable getting inside an iMac enclosure; a HUGE pain in the @ss if you ask me). I will say that the OS is definitely faster, and Parallels runs XP faster too.
Mac Minis are also good candidates for a swap like this. As a matter of fact, I have a Core Duo 1.83GHz CPU which somebody with a Core Solo or Core Duo 1.6 GHz Mac Mini might want...
Regards, Andrew"
There's a previous page here on Intel-based Mac Mini CPU Upgrades/chip swaps since 2006. (First gen Mac Pro owners have also swapped in Quad-Core (Clovertown) Xeons months before the 2008 Mac Pros were released although they have later Harpertown Xeons.)
If you've upgraded the CPU(s) your Intel-based iMac, Mini or Mac Pro, let me know the details. Thanks.

| Enigmo (game App) 1.1 update adds support for addon levels |
Just noticed this morning that there's an Enigmo 1.1 update at the iTunes app store that adds the ability to download new levels (menu item in game).
FYI: Checking again Thursday morning showed an Enigmo 1.1.1 update, said to fix a problem with saving games after a custom game had been saved.
And again this morning when "checking for updates" to Apps I saw 1 noted on the text line in itunes, but viewing the updates showed another case where multiple listings of the same update (and listings of updates I'd already downloaded) were shown. Since iTunes 7.7.1 I've seen several times where updates I'd already downloaded were shown, but recently (since the iPhone 2.0.1 update) I'm not the only one to see multiple listings of the same App update. After downloading the update, a check again usually corrects this but I've had several readers send screenshots showing the multiple (repeated) updates shown in itunes.
