| DVRFlash 2.6 Update (adds support for DVR-116 and SATA DVR-216 models) |
"Hi Mike: Here is some follow up to my July 21, 2008 (drive upgrade database) report on the Pioneer DVR-116D... I had been using it with no problems burning both CDs and DVDs. I updated the firmware to version 1.06 using DVRFlash v. 2.6 (DVRFlash v2.6.0 http://dvrflash.rpc1.org/ added support for DVR-116 and (SATA) DVR-216 models.) - I'll explain a glitch with this further on. Since the firmware update I have burned CDs and DVDs but did have two TDK CDs fail with an inability to write the lead out. Both previous and subsequent burns to the same media worked fine. I have also burned TDK DVDs with no problems. I use Toast 9.0.2 and burn at the "Best" speed.
I spoke to Pioneer and was told that they have had no complaints about the new firmware, but it is pretty new. I asked if they could send me a copy of the earlier 1.03 firmware but apparently it is not available, coming only on the manufactured units. (Pioneer (jp) firmware downloads page here has the usual note about updates -i.e. "Once updated to version 1.06, this drive will not revert to older firmware versions." although there was a parameter to force flash updates (used in the past to flash a DVD-RAM supporting firmware in some older models) but there may be issues with earlier firmware and later kernel file updates.-Mike) Pioneer suggested that I send the unit in for repair if I continue to have problems. I have not had additional problems as yet. I did carefully blow some air into the unit to clear any dust that might be there (probably just moved it around). I am left without any definite conclusion as to the cause of my two errors but I did reflash the Pioneer in case the first effort did not complete properly.
As for DVRFlash 2.6, when trying to run it I ran into a Permission Denied problem. Per a tip I picked up on the internet, I placed the application on the desktop and ran the following in Terminal:
cd Desktop/DVRFlash (hit return)
chmod 744 DVRFlash (hit return)
This corrected permissions on DVRFlash and I was able to run it with no problem.

| (FYI on a past issue reported by some owners here - for those that have systems wake from sleep, power dropouts can cause this also due to power cycling on USB devices (connecting them to an UPS can solve that issue)
"...I also have a Mac Pro that starts up at 6:00 pm every day like clock work. I have been through all of the Apple Technical support, SMA reset and PRAM reset and taken my Mac in for the weekend. ect...
There is a work around, not a fix. In Energy Saver/Schedule, if you click on the wake computer and set it for a time (like a time you would already be using the Mac) the computer will stop automatically turning itself on.
Last weekend I had messed up my Mac by changing too many things with programs to see if I could figure out what programs might be affecting the starting up issue. I did a clean install and formated the drive. I did not install any Leopard updates, no other software loaded, firewire, internet and unnecessary USB devices removed and immediately I could reproduce the problem of my computer starting up at 6:00 pm. The time of start up varies form person to person depending on your location and how many hours from the UTC you are. I am 6 hours away thus the 6 pm start time. (Some have said it happens at specific GMT times)
Apple told me they sent a ticket to the engineers (I believe) and that a fix was not to be had, and hopefully before too long they will post it in the support pages...
