Anyone using a PCIe or Express/34 SATA card with Snow Leopard?
I realize that Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) is not out yet (and there's going to be a lot of driver updates needed) but posting as a FYI/request to see if anyone's using a card that's working in SL. (Some cards had native support in Tiger/Leopard.)

(comments updated)
"I have a MacPro with two Sonnet PCI-e External SATA cards, they have the Sil3132 chip and their driver does not work with Snow Leopard. The installer actually goes through the trouble of moving the driver out of the Extensions folder. Sonnet support told me that Sil has no intentions of updating the driver. (I hope that isn't true, considering how many Sil3132 based cards are out there. And see Firmtek's reply below - they say there will be OS X 10.6 drivers for their Sil3132 based PCIe and Expresscard models.-Mike)

I was wandering if you or one of the readers has tested a PCI-e Sata card with Snow Leopard and it works. It is difficult to find informations on what chip the different e-SATA cards use.
(I asked him for his specific Sonnet card model and if Sonnet had commented on 10.6 compatibility with any of the other SATA cards they sell.-Mike)
it's the Tempo SATA E2P.
I just got another email from Sonnet and they say that the Tempo SATA E4P (the one with four ports, not two like the ones I have) has a Marvell chip and should be compatible with 10.6 and they are working on the driver."

A reply from today on the current E4P card drivers (comments updated 6PM):

"I use a Sonnet E4P and it does not seem to work under snow leopard yet. Again I think it's just a driver issue tho, I hope to have an update before the official Snow Leopard ship date.
(However he later wrote)
.... your posts got me thinking, since I had installed the Sonnet drivers back when I first installed the developer build of 10.6. Since then there have a few updates to the DP. On a whim I installed them again over the latest (available, not GM) build and sure enough it worked fine. Both my RAIDs show up, and both of them are connected via port multipliers. I just used the standard 2.1.9 installer from the Sonnet site. No real tests since 10.6 isn't my primary boot, just installed it to check it out stuff, like this. But files open from the connected drives and seem ok."

An earlier mail this week on problems with an SIL3132 chip based Express/34 card:

" Vantec eSata Express/34 card (Sil3132 based), running on a MacBook Pro 15" santa rosa.
Snow leopard developer build, all up to date. Whenever you unplug a cable or shut down the card and then put it on again, snow leopard will do a kernal panic..."

I assume he's using the Sil3132 card v1.19 (non-raid) driver (originally posted several years ago). You'd think that with the huge number of cards using this chipset (sold under many 'brands') that Silicon Image would eventually post a driver update. (I'll try to find a contact number and write them.) I also wrote firmtek to ask about their cards and snow leopard. Here's their reply regarding OS X 10.6 drivers for their SiI-3132 chip based 2-port PCIe and Expresscard:

"Mike, ...I can tell you that the FirmTek SeriTek/2SE2-E (PCIe) and SeriTek/2SM2-E (ExpressCard/34) driver is on track to be released with 64-bit Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) support.
Thank you for asking,
Kim Stanford
FirmTek"

If you're using an SATA card (PCIe or Expresscard) with Snow Leopard, let me know. (The Jmicron chip based cards had native support in Leopard/tiger, but don't know anyone that's used one in Snow Leopard yet.)

OS X Browser speed test results using new PeaceKeeper Benchmark
Rod Paine CC'd me on a mail to the developer of iCab with his test results using a new browser benchmark called PeaceKeeper. I've posted a page with his Peacekeeper test results/screenshots comparing iCab 4.6.1, Safari 4.0.3, Firefox 3.6 alpha, Firefox 3.5.2 and Opera 10.0 on his PowerMac G5 1.8GHz running OS X 10.4.11.
