Carmine's News Feed:

Apple has a TIL posted on iMac game controller support. Owners have reported problems with game pads working with the USB Mouse. The TIL states that you need to install the InputSprocket extensions in order to let your game recognize the iMac's USB mouse. They also have a TIL on using multiple internet access configurations. Other useful links are their Tech Exchange forums and software updates areas.

Yahoo has a press release on Quake III Arena, calling it a "Completely new gaming technology to enable high end 3D". Another heavily anticipated game that will appear much sooner is Valve's Half-Life. RTGN has a very good preview of the game. This is one game I'd like to see a petition started for a Mac glide (3Dfx) version. RTGN also has 68 (!) screenshots of Tomb Raider III.

Speaking of Tomb Raider, Westlake Interactive posted a status update saying Tomb Raider II for the Mac went into Alpha on the 14th of August. They say the 3Dfx version is running 30fps (the max the game supports) on every machine they tried with a Voodoo card. Rave support is next they say. Might be old news but they also noted that Mac Unreal is to be in stores at the end of the month. The MacSoft main page has a picture of the Gold Master CD of Unreal.

Sticker Shock: Think the 1:1 Cache speed G3 cards are expensive? Try adding 512k of full speed (400Mhz) cache option to a Dell Xeon 610 workstation. That extra 512k of cache will cost you $1999! But hey, you get a break on the cache upgrade of the 2nd processor, adding 512k to that one only costs $1800. (And I like that "Raid 0 Striping with 1 SCSI Hard Drive" option. ;-) [4:00 PM Update]

ZD/Net has a quick poll on 'What appeals to you most about the iMac?'

iMac Floppy Drive How-To: Dave Johnson sent a URL to a C'T magazine article showing you how to add a floppy drive to the iMac. Apparently the motherboard has pads for a 20 pin floppy connector, but you have to solder the connector on (this will void the warranty of course).

" Hi Mike,
Thanks for creating such a great site! Thought you might be interested in this website which details adding a floppy drive to an iMac (apparently there's a spot on the motherboard for the required 20-pin socket)!

PS. A picture shows the floppy ribbon cable exiting through the finger hole on the side of the iMac - arrrggggh! "

PowerBook G3 292/14" Alert: In case anyone's looking for these rare birds:

iMac PalmPilot?: Mike Kramer writes of a iMac colored PalmPilot:

"Just thought I would drop a note to your readers interested in PalmPilot purchases.

I have yet to buy one, but I want to. At MacWORLD Expo NYC, the Pilot people had a palmpilot in iMac plastics!! It looked great, but alas, the rep said it was a demo only to "let you look at the inside." Yeah, right, just a demo in clear and translucent turquoise? Lets write these guys and tell em to make it for us mac lovers. I'll buy one.

Unfortunately, there is no email for customer relations. There is an 888 number. Phone 888-619-7488 (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Pacific time zone, Monday through Friday) to talk with a Customer Relations specialist.

iMac Marketing Works: Frank Bernier wrote with with a story that proves that Apple's iMac marketing is working:

" I thought this would be interesting to mention here. It's about the imac popularity here in Japan. While probably all people in America now have probably heard of the imac, I almost fell off my chair after visiting my mother-in-law in the Japanese countryside. After the usual cup of coffee by the pond, she started to talk to me about the new imac! While this by itself might not be so amazing, I must say that she is 75 years old, and is a complete computer illeterate ! So I guess the Apple agressive publicity is working at its best ;P

great site btw.
regards,
Dr. Frank Bernier "

C'T PowerBook G3 Review: German magazine C'T

" Hi Mike!
First of all, Your site is marvellous ! A must-read every day.

I would like to point you to this very comprehensive comparison between Wintel notebooks and the PowerBook G3 line. It was made by the well respected german magazine cĄt (covers not only mac but also and unfortunately mostly PC) and the result is the PowerBooks shattered their Wintel counterparts and in most of the tests the slowest G3/233 w/o BS-chache was faster then the PII 266 notebook. Especially impressing are the Mathematica 3.0 scores. Unfortunately there are no charts in this translation.

Another victory !
Best regards
Robert Ruzitschka "

A reader sent me a copy of that issue, but I can't read German. I can tell from the graphs that the PB led the pack on most tests however.

Aaron Trinder wrote that Vimage has updated their web site on their forthcoming 54/6400 G3 240Mhz CPU upgrade, stating it will be available on October 10th. More info is at: http://www.vimagestore.com/pf6400specs.html

Reader Request: Peter Bethke copied me on a problem he's seen with a cable modem and Internet Explorer:

" Dear Surfboard folks:
I am using a Surfboard 1200 provided by CFW Cable in Charlottesville, VA. I am using a Mac 8500 with system 8.1, 112MB RAM, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0. There seems to be a problem with MIE Mac communicating with the Modem. Although the conenction Mannager comes up (after enetering the default IP address), any communication between the user and the modem such as "Connection Now" or "Reload Tests" (I'm not at the moden=m right now, don't recall the exact verbage) does not work and results in a "spinning wait circle" ad infinitum. This behavior is also present with MIE for Mac 3.01.

However, everything works just fine with Netscape 3.0 and 4.0.

Do you think this is a problem with MIE's implementation of the cgi protocol or so forth? Have you encountered this problem on your end?

Mike: Could you post this on your site (www.xlr8yourmac.com) to see if any of your users have encountered this problem too?

Best Regards,
Peter D. Bethke "

If you have a solution or have also had this problem please contact me.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help. You might save someone from a lifetime of Windows in the bargain.
