Nvidia RoadMap Shows GeForce2 Slated for Macs:
There's been rumors and stories on Nvidia working on Mac graphics card drivers, etc. for a long time. (They also hired Jim Black from Apple about a year ago, and had a job opening for a QA tester for Mac products recently.) The latest is the saga was sent by Jonas Palm who wrote to say that Digit-Life has a page on an Nvidia's presentation that includes a link to a Nvidia Graphics Chip Roadmap that shows the GeForce2 slated for use with Macs. (They used an iMac as the icon - but then they are likely to be going after the onboard chip Apple business as well as graphics card versions).

QPS Firewire 12/10/32 CDRW 1.07 Firmware Update:
| Scott Ellsworth wrote that QPS has released a 1.07 firmware update for the Firewire CDRW drives (same firmware as the Plextor 1.07 I assume) but notes that like the Plextor updater, it's for PCs only.
I hope Plextor releases a Mac IDE CDRW flash utility soon, and a flasher is really needed for drives in Firewire cases. (Especially for the 12/10/32 Plextor drive, which has had a lot of firmware updates in the last 6 months.)

Ratoc FireREX1 FireWire to Ultra SCSI User Comments Wanted:
"
I'm interested in the RATOC FireREX1 FireWire to Ultra SCSI converter:
www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/subpages/firerex1.html
I have a B&W G3, and I'm shopping for a tape backup drive like an
NS-20 from ClubMac, which is Ultra SCSI. To save a PCI slot, I'm
thinking this adapter would be cool to plug the tape drive into a
FireWire port, rather than installing an Ultra SCSI adapter card.
But, what about performance of the tape drive for backups? I'd
appreciate your asking for user experience on this or similar devices
(I guess Adaptec may have something, too).

If any readers have used the Ratoc adapter please let me know your experiences (include your system and device details also). Thanks!

More on Maxtor ATA/100 Drive/Sonnet/Acard ATA/66 Card Issue:
The reader that reported file corruption on large file copies over a network in yesterday's news wrote back to say that switching to an older Apple driver seems to have solved the problem. His email lists the various Apple Drive Setup versions he used.
"
Hi Mike,
after many test I think tha the problem is NOT related to the Maxtor HD
but probabily is caused by a conflict between Tempo Card and Apple SCSI
driver (and PowerMac ethernet ?).
In my previous e-mail, I was unable to downgrade the apple driver from
8.1.4 simply because Drive Setup 1.8.1 (SYS 9 CD) I've used install the
same version. To downgrade the Maxtor HD to the 8.0.9 Apple low level
SCSI driver, I used Drive Setup 1.4 (sys 8.1 CD) and with this version,
the file corruption problem when I copy the file over the network
disappear !!!
I've tried this many times (with both 3.1.0 and 3.0.8 ACard firmware on
the Tempo Card) and I've no doubts: with 8.0.9 SCSI driver (or 4.0
FWB-HDT driver) both the Maxtor as Western Digital HD works well, while
with the 8.1.4 SCSI driver the Maxtor HD (and probabily also the Western
Digital HD, but I'll try this tomorrow after I've baked up all my files)
always corrupt the 10MB network transferred StuffIt file I've used in my
test.
I think that any owner of Sonnet Tempo card should make a similar test to
verify the entity of this issue (note: to read the SCSI driver version
used in your hd, get-info on the volume icon and read the end of the
"where:" label).
This is al little table I've verified about the relation between
DriveSetup version and SCSI driver version:
[Note - as mentioned since the first IDE card review here, they appear as SCSI to the MacOS and therefore have a SCSI driver, not IDE-Mike]
Drive Setup 1.3 (sys8) -> 8.0.8
Drive Setup 1.4 (sys 8.1) -> 8.0.9
Drive Setup 1.8.1 (sys 9) -> 8.1.4
Drive Setup 1.9.2 (OS X b) [and OS 9.04-Mike] -> 8.1.4 (but the partition scheme changes
because there is an extra "Apple_FWdriver" partition not created by Drive
Setup 1.8.1)
Bye.
