Wishing You All Happy Holidays!
$299.95 Newer Tech G4/400 ZIFs:
Site Sponsor Other World Computing sent a note on a holiday sale on Newer Tech CPU upgrades:

" Hi Mike! Happy Holidays!
We have some deals for the readers on NewerTech products starting today. 3 different upgrades available at some of the best prices around.

2 G4 ZIF upgrades- G4/400 and G4/450

7MXMG450/225 $434.95
7MXMG400/200 $299.95

And the G3/500 PCI upgrade
7MXP+500/250 $369.95

All 3 are of course on the XLR8YourMac specials page. http://eshop.macsales.com/specials/XLR8YourMac.cfm
Thanks!
Jamie"

[Jamie noted these prices are valid while current supplies last - Check the specials page for current models/price, which over time can be lower. As of Dec. 2001, OWC has G4/500 ZIFs for $299.xx, reviewed on the G4 reviews page.] I reviewed an earlier version of the Newer Tech G4/400 ZIF upgrade in my B&W G3 last year. The review includes installation info (w/Photos) and performance tests. (The current G4 CPU in the upgrade is likely a later revison than I tested, as well as having later software versions, etc.) The review is linked on the G4 reviews tab of the CPU upgrades page for those that don't check the topics page links.

Proformance 3 Owner Tip on Oni Demo:
Several Proformance 3 owners reported that the Oni Demo didn't work with their card, but this reader reported installing OpenGL 1.2.1 worked for him:

" Hi Mike,
I found that installing the ATI drivers that come with OpenGL 1.2.1 allowed the Oni demo to run beautifully. I don't have an ATI card, but the drivers don't seem to affect system operation at all and Oni runs very smoothly.

B&W G3
768 RAM
SGI 1600sw w/Proformance 3
Happy Holidays,
Rob "

The card would not use the ATI extensions or the ATI opengl renderer, but perhaps the OpenGL update helped (or it was running in software mode). OpenGL 1.2.1 is available in the Cro-Mag Rally demo and the Lightwave 6.5 update and available separately at this MacUpdate.com page. If this solves other Proformance3 owner problems with the Oni demo, let me know. (Make sure you make a backup copy your existing OpenGL extensions just in case you see other problems.)
