Formac's Curvy 16/10/40x CDRW Drive Is Bus Powered (no AC Adapter)
(UPDATE: See the Firewire articles page, CDRW section for reviews of the 12/10/32 and 16/10/40 Formac FW CDRW drives. As a FYI - I *do not* recommend running these on bus power with any Mac - since they draw more power than Apple specs for the FW port.)
Mike Perez sent a link to Formac's products page that shows their curvy, space age case designs on their 12/10/32 and 16/10/40x CDRW drives which are the first full-size CDRW drives I've seen that are bus powered, requiring no AC adapter.

The products page also has info on their "Studio" DV/Analog video capture/TV device.

Reader Comments on 4x4 EVO under OS X Beta:
In reply to an earlier post, several readers sent info on running 4x4 Evolution under OS X Beta.

" Hi Mike
This is from the 4x4 Evo ReadMe:

Mac OS X
At this time, Mac OS X has been released as Mac OS X Public Beta. This version of Mac OS X does not fully support some game technologies. To allow 4x4 Evo to be used on Mac OS X Public Beta systems, the installer includes an option for Mac OS X support.

This option will install an application called 4x4 Evolution-X in the 4x4 Evolution folder. This application is functionally identical to the normal 4x4 Evolution (which is also installed) except that it does not require DrawSprocket and thus 4x4 will run in a window. Be sure to select a video resolution that is equal to or less than the resolution that your monitor is set to.

Mac OS X does not support InputSprocket. This means that joysticks and other controller devices will not function under Mac OS X. Be sure that the controller type is set to keyboard.

Warning: You will need to manually set the allowFrameBufferLocking flag (in the render.ini file) to 0 (default is 1). Failure to do so may cause random crashes or other problems.

Please note that this version is unsupported. It is our hope that 4x4 Evolution will run on the final version of Mac OS X without modification. However, since Mac OS X is still beta software, it is considered an unsupported platform. Please report any bugs you do find while running 4x4 under Mac OS X.

I haven't noticed any difference* between the classic or carbonized version. The carbonized version is also working under MacOS 9 but like in OSX there is no InputSprockets support and it runs in window mode etc. etc.. If you want I could make a Screenshot for you.

" Mike:
I ran the demo under OS X on an iMac/333 with 96mb. Oops, my iMac doesn't know that it shouldn't be able to run PB. 4x4 ran just fine if a little pokey. Since the demo worked under OS X, I would expect the shipping version to as well.
William "

" Mike,
There is a custom install option with 4x4 Evolution. I'm running both versions on my iMac DV/SE 500. The OS X version is not ready for prime time. Essentially, they are the same except that the OS X version does not support Input Sprocket or Draw Sprocket (because it's carbon compliant). Further, Apple doesn't yet have a suitable replacement. Likewise, keyboard input is your only choice (which just doesn't cut it) for this game. Further, the performance is very sluggish on the OS X version.

The regular OS 9 version is as smooth as can be with all of the options turned up (except resolution at 640x480). Also, the OS X version will run in a 640x480 window if your screen resolution is higher than that for your normal desktop.

4x4 EVO - OS X Support Files?
Tom Koons writes:

" Mike
I saw the comments on ONI for OSX. [in Yesterday's news-Mike] I just installed 4x4 EVO last night (cool game!) and I noticed that under a custom install it will install OSX support files? I didn't try it because my OSX beta is on a PB but I didn't even know that 4x4 EVO had the potential for that?
Tom"

If any readers have ran 4x4 under OS X beta, let me know (include your system and card details).

If you missed it, Yesterday's news had a note on a 4x4 Track Editor petition for Mac (a PC version only track editor was released) as well as a link to a Mac 4x4 web site with download links to addon tracks.

WaterRace and Jetski Demo Tips for Voodoo3 Owners:
Tom Koons sent a tip for running these Rave games with a Voodoo3 graphics card:

" I found a Voodoo RAVE driver that somewhat works with both WaterRace and Kawasaki JetSki.

The RAVE driver from the Voodoo5 1.0.1 driver set seems to work with Water Race and make JetSki a little better. If you remember I had much trouble with WaterRace and the RAVE drivers for the Voodoo3. the V5 1.1.2 and V5 1.1.3b RAVE driver didn't work. The V5 1.0.1 driver works but the opening screens are horribly garbled. You can see text but not the background. But the Racing is finally visible.

JetSki is playable with all the above mentioned RAVE versions but the opening intro's are most visible with the 1.0.1 driver.

All were tested with the Voodoo 3 beta12 drivers. I only changed the RAVE library in each test.

The Water Race tech support people are going to check older version of the RAVE driver as well after confering with me. They had found that one version somewhat worked (possible the 1.0.1?) and then stopped checking with a Voodoo3 since they assumed the Voodoo5 cards would be the same. I guess they aren't :)

Using 3dfx 1.1.3 beta Drivers and Check for Updates Feature:
A reader who was using the 1.1.3 beta drivers (linked here on Dec 19th) noted that running the "check for updates" feature of the control panel reported an update, but downloaded 1.1.2 build 21 drivers.

" Hello Mike,
I just wanted to let you know that I've had the 1.1.3 beta drivers installed and they've worked just fine. However on Dec 25th I decided to check for updates using the 3dfs MacTools CP and to my surprise it said a new version was available.

It was also to my surprise that the version that it installed was Version 1.1.2 Build 21. So it actually installed an older version of the drivers and it didn't even update the ROM when I opened the CP after the restart!!?

Attempts at checking for updates now results in an 'error while attempting to connect'.
Dana D. "

(The ROM in the 1.1.3b was a later version which is why that the control panel would not write an older version. You can force a reflash as noted here by readers previously by holding down the "F" key when opening the 1.1.2 Control Panel.) I've added these comments to the 1.1.3b driver feedback page.

More Proformance 3 Owner Comments/Tips on Oni Demo:
Another Proformance 3 owner sent a note on how he got the Oni Demo to run, using tips from past news posts here. (Yesterday's news and Saturday's news.) Here's the latest report from a Proformance 3 owner running the Oni Demo successfully:

" Mike,
Once again your web site has worked wonders. After reading TMD's note, I went back and installed GameSprockets 1.7.5, deleted the ProFormance 3D accelerator and the OpenGLFormac renderer (the ProGraphics control panel seemingly re-creates fresh copies of them on system startups if deleted) and rebooted. Oni now works supersmoothly on a B/W G3/450 with a ProFormance III with 16 MB RAM, font cache set to default.

The only difference between my setup and TMD's is that I'm running OpenGL 1.2.1, EPROM version 2.5.1, Open Transport 2.6.3 (from the latest MacOS System Disk for the Dual Processor G4, v2.3) and QuickTime Public Preview 2 (5.0b2 main QuickTime file.) The OpenGL ATI Renderer wasn't disabled; I disabled it and there seemed to be no difference if it was in extensions or not.

Evidently all the new demos are expecting at least DrawSprocketLib 1.7.5 for some reason...
Peter C. "

Another Proformance 3 owner wrote to express disappointment in the card's OpenGL game performance (i.e. Quake3, Fakk2, Elite Force).
