Article Comments on Flat Panel iMac Component Orders:
Cnet has a story titled Flat-panel iMacs on the way? that claims Apple has placed component orders for 100,000 15" flat-panel based iMacs per month, starting in January. Bloomberg also has a related story titled Apple Computer May Unveil Redesigned IMac in Jan., Analyst Says. Of course only time will tell, but Macworld S.F. looks to be a very interesting show. (With rumors of DDR RAM based Towers, perhaps "G5" CPU based and more.)

Feedback on iDVD2 'No SuperDrive' Patch:
One of Barney's OS X software related links last night included a link to a french page with "iDVD2 No Superdrive patches". (The download includes 3 iDVD2 patches, but no readme file.) Several readers sent comments on using these patches. (It does not allow external burners to be used.) See the feedback page for their reports including two from iBook owners. (That page also includes english text translation of the info about the patches and links to the french site.)

G4/500 ZIF running 600Mhz with Voltage Boost Mod:
There's still no upgrades available (at retail) faster than 500Mhz, but one of our readers posted a Rate Your CPU Upgrade database report on how he's running 600mhz from a G4/500 ZIF with a voltage boost modification (core voltage tweak to 2.5V) in his B&W G3 system.

" I was given this ZIF from BDAqua (in the forums). He said it didn't play nice in his fleet of dual Beiges, so he sent it my way (thanks Bruce!). Initially, it was unstable at 550 MHz. So I got out the soldering iron and conductive pen and reconfigured the CPU voltage from the stock setting of 2.1 volts, to 2.3 volts. This made the CPU stable at 550. I tried 600 MHz (cache at 240), but it would freeze upon boot. So I upped the voltage to 2.4, then 2.5 volts. At 2.5 volts I have perfect stability at 600 MHz with the cache at 240 MHz.

Of course this may not be reliable long term, but I asked if he'd send the details for an article here. (There are two past articles on ZIF voltage mods on the G3 related articles page here.)

BlueChip PB G3 Owner Comments on PL Cache Profiler 1.5
(Updated at 2PM for comments on the 1.4M version for bluechips)

" Hi Mike,
I just downloaded PL's G3/G4 Cache Profiler v1.5 via VTracker. Removed the 1.4b1 extension, installed the 1.5 init, restarted, opened the 1.5 Profiler app. Lo and behold, all it showed was one profile window, no adjustments whatsoever available, contrary to PL's info at:
I have a G3/BlueChip 500. I've gone back to 1.4b1. Maybe 1.5 works fine for G4's. Odd.
Best wishes,
Bob F.
he later wrote:

I did send a message to PL. Bill Jagitsch wrote back, just now.
[Bill's comments removed by request - basically he said that Bob downloaded the profiler for Macs that "don't need adjustment" and told Bob he needed to use 1.4 for Bluechip use.-Mike]

So, Mike, I guess the real problem was in my understanding of versiontracker's as well as PL's descriptions of just what this software is for. The former tells too little, the latter too much--for me anyhow. How was I supposed to know there's a "1.4m" file at PL's Byzantine site? There's a note posted about 1.4 (no "m") now, but there sure wasn't last night. I just downloaded it and lo, there's no "m" there either.
Bob F "

Having the cache speed adjustable is a big plus for Bluechip owners, since some noted (as I had to do with the review loaner) they had to lower the cache speed for stability.

More Sources of Low-Noise Fans:
The Systems page G4 Macs area and the recent articles listing at the bottom of this page have links to noise reduction mod articles (several on the Quicksilver models). After the Dual G4 Cube article and note yesterday about the ability to mount an 80mm fan in the cube, a reader sent a comment about sources of low-noise fans (some of the past articles also list sources).

" RE: Adding a fan to the cube
Being the owner of an Old Power Computing PowerCenter I have been taking steps to make it more silent. If something was bad about the old PowerComputing machines was that they were not very silent. Doing some research on fans I found a very silent one from Zalman

The 80 mm fan comes with a resistor making it possible to run at lower rpms and even more silent (20 dB, according to Zalman). The result was almost stunning, I went from being disturbed by the fans to be concerned about the silent IBM drive that was almost impossible to hear over the fans before. Such a fan at the lower rpm setting should be ideal for a Cube user.
Thought it might be of interest.
Cheers!/ Magnus N‚smark"

Age of Empires II v1.03 Update:
Just a week ago or so there was a 1.01 update, but yesterday a 1.03 update was released. Version 1.03 is reported to fix multiplayer synchronization issues and random crashes that usually occurred late in the game. Although Boldgames' Age of Empires II support page still only lists 1.01 as of 1PM today, this VT page lists a download for v1.03.
