ATI to Show Radeon 8500 and 7000 at MWSF?
(from a reader post in the forums)

" From the Macword Expo Site, in the exhibitor section:
"ATI Technologies Inc. is a world leader in the supply of graphics, video and multimedia solutions for the Mac platform. The pioneer, innovator and market leader in the graphics industry, ATI will be demonstrating the high performance Radeon 8500 and Radeon 7000 Mac Edition graphics cards and the Xclaim TV USB external TV tuner at its booth."

Months ago I posted the Radeon 8500/7500 press release/info but there's been nothing since as far as any official info on a Mac version of the next generation Radeon cards that I have seen.
(And as a FYI - I've tried for months to get more info on an update to address the issues some noted with the previous Radeon PCI firmware update, etc. - I'll keep trying...)

BlueChip G4/500 PowerBook CPU Upgrade Notes on OS Compatibility:
Yesterday's news had an announcement of pre-order pricing on Powerlogix's Bluechip G4/500 (and G3/500) for PowerBook G3 Lombard systems. I had several readers write to ask why Powerlogix's product page noted the G4 upgrade is only compatible with OS X. I thought this sounded strange so I wrote the president of the company and got the following explanation:

" Mike,
The key word is 'currently.'
The cards will work fine with OS 9.x, except for one thing: sleep. The Wall Street [Lombard] under OS 9 doesn't know what a G4-7410 chip is, so it doesn't know how to sleep properly. This is being rectified with software, but it isn't complete yet.

Therefore, technically, the cards are only compatible with OS X at the moment. There is no sleep problem under OS X. Just for clarity, there is no problem when sleeping in OS X with Classic running, either.
-Robert J.
Powerlogix
he later wrote

As a follow up, the Blue Chip G4 WS and Blue Chip G4 LS are not shipping yet anyway. There is a chance the software will be complete before they ship, meaning full OS 9 and OS X compatibility.

The key thing ... is that by the time they ship or shortly thereafter we should have the sleep issue fixed.

Blue Chip G3 WS and Blue Chip G3 LS are fully OS 9 and OS X compatible."

Robert mentions Wallstreet in the original comments but I assume he meant to say Lombard (since these modules for pre-order now that I asked about are Lombard only - the connector on the module is different between the Lombard and Wallstreets). There is a G4 Wallstreet (G4 WS) version also listed at their web site however.
Yesterday's news had links to OWC's pre-order pages for the Bluechip G3/500 LS and Bluechip G4/500 LS upgrades.

More Feedback on SuperDrive Firmware Update Improving Performance:
Last month I posted a page on how (using a PC) to update the (OEM) Pioneer Superdrive DVD recorders to later firmware (v1.55). I noticed a good improvement in performance after the firmware update on that page. (I updated drive from 1.44 to 1.55. Many drives shipped with even earlier firmware.) A reader sent a note he also saw improved performance after a firmware update to his Superdrive.

" Thanks again, Mike.
Your site fills a huge void that retail manufacturers leave in their wake.
They consistently move on to the latest and greatest, forgetting to tie up loose ends on their current, and legacy, products. Case in point, the Apple DVD-R shipped with the first 733's. I had to replace my G4's drive less than a month ago, having had less that satisfactory results with the burning capability since I got it in March. Way too many DVD coasters! The unit shipped proved to be no better. The March production date on the original burner was replace, by Apple, with an April production date unit! What luck. Same firmware revision. 1.22

Taking your directions, and a friends PC, we did the upgrade in less than fifteen minutes. Initial boot locked up the machine, though I had just done the OS 9.2.2 upgrade and can safely say it, and not the firmware upgrade, was the culprit. Drive is still bootable and access times are up substantially, (see enclosed attachments, 3x FWB benchtests, 2x Astarte CD-Copy). Copy speeds now match the Sony 16x/10x/40x burner I have in a Beige G3 desktop.
Brian"

Brian sent several screenshots that I'll have to convert to web formats for adding to the web page on the Superdrive firmware update. I wish Apple would release a (native MacOS) firmware updater so that owners of the drives didn't have to go through the hassle of installing the drive in a PC to update it. (The latest PC firmware is 1.65 or 1.67 I hear - but there's no updaters of those versions that I know of yet that will update the OEM Apple drives.)

Feedback on Booting OS X from OS 9 Tip with Upgraded Beige G3s:
Yesterday's news had a tip for those having problems booting into OS X with a CPU upgrade Beige G3. Most reports on this issue noted a G4 CPU upgrade, but this Beige G3 owner noted he had the same problem with a G3 CPU upgrade.
" Mike, I read your report about problems booting to OS X from OS 9 after a G4 upgrade in the beige G3. I have the same problem in my beige G3 (rev. A). But I have a PowerLogix G3 upgrade, not a G4. I have OS X installed on a hard drive attached to a Sonnet ATA66 PCI card. I had assumed the problem was due to the Sonnet card. The only way I could boot into OS X on the Sonnet drive was to boot first into another installation of OS X on a partition on the IDE bus. I could then select the faster installation of OS X on the Sonnet connected drive from within that partition.

I tried the solution your readers offered to see if I could choose OS X on the Sonnet drive directly from OS 9.2.2. It works! By using the System Disk 3.3.1 CP I don't have to go through all the hastle when I want to choose OS X from within OS 9.
    Thanks.
    John"

As mentioned in the news here when OS X 10.1 (CD) was released, there's a v9.2.3 Startup Disk Control Panel for OS 9 on the CD (Utilities folder I believe) but I assume owners with the problem have tried that. The other reader tip on the issue was using XLR8's software (costs $14.xx for non-XLR8 card owners however).
