| International Version of Appleworks 6.2.2 Update: |
"
Hi, Mike.
A few weeks back when Apple released the AppleWorks 6.2.2 update, they put
in their fine print that it would work for the North American edition only.
A lot of people who had international versions didn't get to read this fine
print and downloaded the update only to find out that the update was
rejected when it didn't match with the region.
Here is the INITIAL link to the AppleWorks Update:
http://www.apple.com/appleworks/update/
(Note in the "Before You Download" section that it requires "Any North
American Engllish Version"). Even the Apple Europe site pointed to this
link for a time which obviously rendered useless to them. They eventually
removed the link and pointed to the old 6.1.2 Update instead. A lot of
gripe regarding this issue can be found in the Apple Discussion Forum of
AppleWorks, MacCentral Forum, and Macnn Forums.
The new AppleWorks Update can be found here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120090
(Note that the release date for all other versions of the software is
2001-12-17).
Hope this helps the other readers who are still trying to download the North
American version when they have an international copy.
Regards,
Raymond"

| ONI for OS X Feedback and Update Mirror: |
| (Comments in reply to today's earlier news item)
"
I have downloaded Oni for Os X.
As for it being an update, I thought it was the first official release
of it, but I may be wrong.
The core functionality seems to work great, but some localization issues
make it barely usable (at least maybe without manual tweakings) on my
french system with AZERTY keyboard.
RÈmi"
Back on Oct. 29th, I noted there was a
Oni for X patch at omnigroup (but you had go to
a special page, enter a code, etc. to download it)
I assume this release is later than that one but
I don't remember that version number.
"Your reader's noted that the new version of Oni is hard to get too, well I
got it and put it on my iDisk (username: quarem), please post this so people
have a mirror to access."

| Star Trek Elite Force 1.2 Patch Due Soon: |
| (from the Aspyr newsletter)
"
Star Trek: Voyager-Elite Force 1.2 Patch
We've had quite a few folks wondering when the STV-EF 1.2 patch would be released. Brad Oliver, of Westlake Interactive, has been working on this and we are expecting to release this later this week, just in time for Christmas.
For those playing Elite Force for the Mac, full version 1.1, This patch has two major components. In single player, it adds the Jeri Ryan voice pack. This will update the original game to use dialogue for Seven of Nine performed by Jeri Ryan, who plays the character on the show.
In multiplayer, this updates the Holomatch engine to version 1.2. This will allow players who do not install the Expansion Pack to compete against players with the Expansion Pack for Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag games. A number of new multiplayer skins are included as well, including Borgified Captain Janeway.
The Readme file included with the download will include more detailed information.
Be sure to check back with our web site on Friday to get the download!"

| Updated Listing of CF/Smartmedia USB Readers that worked with ZIO! OS X drivers |
|
Monday's news had a note that a reader sent saying his Kodak USB CompactFlash carder included with his Kodak DC215 camera worked in OS X using the ZIO! drivers (available at http://www.microtechint.com/downloads/). The list below from yesterday's news has been updated with other reports of those readers reported as working an d not working with the ZIO! drivers.
Reported Working:
- eFilm USB Compact
Flash Reader-Writer that's included in the Nikon Coolpack II Accessory kit
(eFilm PN# DDReader-2)
- Smart media USB device branded 'Buffalo' (no model details)
- Datawise USB CF reader (the owner said it is a SCM Microsystems based product)
Readers That Didn't Work
- SIIG Smartmedia US2216
- IBM CF reader (actually made by Apricorn the owner said)
- SmartMedia reader ( Shuttle Technology per ASP) that came with an Olympus D360
- Lexar USB Trimedia reader model
GS-UFD-20SA-TP
- Lexar Jumpshot USB compactflash reader
- SanDisk SDDR-05 and SDDR-09
(Apple notes only the SanDisk SDDR-31 model is supported
in OS X 10.1 per this TIL on camera/reader compatibility, but one reader noted the SDDR-05 worked if there was a card inserted before the system was booted.)
If any other readers try the drivers with their unsupported USB CompactFlash or Smartmedia readers (using the appropriate ZIO driver for the card type), let me know.
One ZIO! CF reader owner noted that it caused a kernel panic if plugged into the keyboard USB port of a DP800 system (w/OS X 10.1.1), but not when plugged directly into the PB G4's USB ports.
(I've added the ZIO drivers info to the FAQ's OS X section which also has a link/note on what Digital Cameras and card readers are supported by the standard install of OS X 10.1.)

| Improved CPU Cooling Solution For 601/603 Macs |
"
Mike,
I have found a way to mount a cpu fan or a better cpu fan in 601 and 603 based macs. there is a heatsink/fan known as the thermaltake blue orb. it is intended for use by wintel hobbyists who overclock their videocards however it is also the perfect size for mounting on 601 and 603 processors in place of the reasonably pathetic heatsinks apple used in these systems. this is a $12 fan that only requires a simple modification. I have been using one for months and it has been a real improvement over the useless fan apple provided. would you be interested in detailed instructions with pictures of the required modifications for your website?

I've written Trevor to say I'd be glad to post an article on this. |

| Feedback on Internet Explorer 5.1 Update for Classic: |
| Last night's news had a note about IE 5.1 for classic (available here). A few readers sent their comments on it.
"
The new IE5.1 upgrade is on fire on my OS9.1 box! Everything "seems" very
much faster, from HTML table rendering to page displays to refreshes (even a
Page Down is faster) Just thought I'd let you know..

Mike-
Just taking a peek at the 5.1 Explorer, I noticed some changes (mainly
cosmetic?) in the preference panel. There are now interface options, similar
to OS X which allow for new browser windows to be opened by other apps
trying to launch a webpage or for the current default setting of the icon
button bar to be preserved for newly created windows (if shrunk, they will
remain so in the new window). Also noticed an option for translucent
contextual menus (kinda hokey, but how'd they do that?) New splash screen,
also. Great site, love it (and appreciate the long hours you put into it).
Merry Christmas.
soli deo gloria,
Jeremy

Mike,
If you haven't changed your home page in IE since installing, you may
notice that the livepage.apple.com link now redirects to
http://home.netscape.com/oem/apple/index.html instead of
http://apple.excite.com/.

| OS X with 1.8GB and 2GB of RAM: |
[Note: Several readers replied to this post to note they had 2GB of RAM installed and recognized by OS X.]
I've had a few readers in the past ask if OS X will recognize more than 1.5GB of installed RAM. I've not had that much to try in a system personally, but Jon Shand wrote that OS X sees all 1.8GB of RAM in his G4/AGP system. (4 dimm slot model, assuming he's using three 512MB dimms and one 256MB dimm.) He noted in OS 9.1 only 1GB is shown however but I've asked him to recheck that. (Another reader with 1.5GB installed said OS 9.1 reports all of it. However the System may be shown as using huge amounts of RAM.) The 2001 G4 towers have only 3 dimm slots however, so unless using 1GB dimms, the max would be 1.5GB (using 512MB dimms x 3).
